Rafael sighed as he stood up.
"Things are... have been complicated."
"Complicated? That's a good reason to neglect your mate," she replied voice dripping with scratching sarcasm, folding her hands.
"I haven't neglected him, I—"
"Yes, that's why he wears clothes that don't fit and still looks like a slight wind might sweep him off."
Rafael lowered his head for a moment.
Julian felt awkward. Rafael didn't need to be chastised like this.
Julian could see...he could feel that Rafael was doing his best.
"Don't talk to him like that." Julian's voice came out sharper than he intended.
Alma looked at him with something in her eyes a glint not of shock but of knowing. Like she could see something in him that he couldn't.
Julian looked away. He felt Rafael walk closer to him.
"No... no, she's right, Julian. I haven't given you enough attention. I haven't courted you like you deserve."
Julian's throat felt heavy. Did he deserve anything?
