Chapter 18 - Hunter

The air, already thick with the scent of rust and rot, now carried a new, sickly-sweet tang of anticipation. At the center of the crowd, a single, rough-hewn table held a pulsating, obsidian-black beast core, humming with an evil life of its own.

Ajay stood near the back, a shadow in a crowd of ghosts. He feigned the same terror as those around him, his body language screaming a coward's fear. But his eyes, sharp and analytical, missed nothing. He had a new set of problems now, a new brand of wolf to watch out for.

Vajra stood over the table, his presence as heavy and oppressive as the sky itself. His gaze swept over the crowd, a cruel fire in his eyes. "You've seen the new world, and it's built on a new kind of power," he roared. "I have found a solution. We call this new system the Beast Mutation System."

The courtyard remained a silent tableau of fear and disbelief. Vajra's presence was enough to keep the crowd frozen, but it was not the leader who spoke next. It was Danny, the tactician, who stepped forward. His movements were calm and measured, a sharp contrast to the primal chaos that was to come. His voice, clear and precise, cut through the heavy silence.

"We live in a new world," Danny began, his eyes scanning the faces of the survivors, analyzing their fear. "The System blesses a chosen few, but it is a fickle god. To gain its acknowledgment, we have to fight and bleed, killing beasts powerful beyond your ability. But with this new power, we can fight and protect."

A wave of relief and confusion rippled through the crowd.

"The old rules no longer apply," he continued, a thin, cruel smile on his lips. "And neither does a single path to power. We have found another. For us to gain new power, we consume the core, specifically the beast core. It seeks to rewrite your very essence. The pain is a crucible. If you survive, you are no longer just human. You are a hybrid."

Danny laid out the specifics of the new path, each detail a link in the chain of their new servitude. He explained that a successful mutation could grant physical traits—claws, fangs, enhanced senses—or genetic skills inherited from the beast itself. These skills would require no cooldown, only the raw cost of stamina or magic, making them a well of untethered power.

"Some will fail," he said, his voice flat, as if discussing an inevitable mathematical outcome. "Some will die. Some will lose their minds. But in this world, the greatest failure is staying weak. The greatest curse is being nothing more than food for what's coming."

Ajay watched from the back, his mind translating every word. He saw through the calm facade. This was not a gift; it was a leash. Danny was presenting a choice between two forms of death: one swift and final, the other a slow, agonizing slide into monstrosity. He was creating a new power base for the Red Fang, an army of obedient beasts bound by the very power that had transformed them.

Danny concluded with a final, chilling statement. "Survival is not a right. It is a prize. And this is the fastest way to claim it."

Vajra's eyes roamed the crowd before settling on one man. "Vikram. Step forward."

A murmur rose. Vikram was no coward, but neither was he reckless. A broad-shouldered fighter with scars down his arms, he had earned his place by surviving more ambushes than most. His face betrayed nothing, but Ajay's trained eye caught it—the slight tightening of his jaw, the hesitation masked as obedience.

He wasn't stepping forward because he wanted power. He was stepping forward because refusing would make him prey. Ajay narrowed his gaze.

A volunteer… not from courage, but from fear. Smart enough to know that resistance would spark rebellion. Smarter still to make himself seem loyal. But if he survives this…

"A brave man volunteers to serve the pack," Vajra announced, gesturing toward the table. "This is the core of a wolf-type beast. I am giving it to you to rewrite your destiny."

Vikram stood before the table, staring down at the pulsating core. Sweat trickled down his brow. Vajra's gaze bore into him.

"Take it," Vajra commanded. "Show them what it means to embrace evolution."

The crowd held its breath. Vikram reached out, his fingers trembling just once before tightening like iron. He lifted the core, its unnatural hum resonating through his bones, and without another pause, shoved it into his mouth. The crunch echoed through the courtyard.

Then came the scream.

It wasn't human—not anymore. It started deep in his chest, a roar of pain that scraped raw against the walls, rising higher and higher until it splintered into something primal. His body convulsed, veins bulging black against his skin. His muscles swelled, tearing through his shirt.

Ajay's lips pressed into a thin line as he watched. So the core isn't just absorbed—it rewrites the flesh. Bone, muscle, even teeth… all reshaped.

Vikram collapsed to his knees, clawing at the ground. His fingers elongated, nails hardening into curved, bone-white talons that dug furrows in the stone. His jaw cracked, teeth splintering and reforming into jagged fangs. His eyes snapped open—yellow, glowing, feral.

Gasps erupted. Men staggered back. A few crossed themselves as though facing a demon.

When the spasms stopped, Vikram rose slowly. Taller. Broader. His breath came out in low, guttural growls, his chest heaving like a predator cornered in a cage. Then he looked down at his claws, flexed them, and smiled—a smile filled with too many teeth.

Vajra stepped forward, unflinching. His voice was thunder again, deliberate and commanding. "Vikram is dead. What stands before you is the future. From this day, you are Hunter, Fifth Commander of the Red Fang."

Vajra continued, "As we all know, to stabilize the System, we need to kill ten beings. But with this power, you just had to eat a beast core, and the System will stabilize no matter if you had killed a zombie or not."

The crowd roared, half in awe, half in fear. Some shouted the new name. Others shrank back, realizing the line between predator and prey had just been redrawn.

Ajay didn't cheer. He kept his face down, his body trembling like the others—but inside, his thoughts burned cold.

He's no longer a man. He's not a mindless beast either. He has a predator's strength… and a soldier's mind. That makes him worse than both.

I can slit a throat, break a neck, vanish into shadows. But against claws that can shear stone? Against muscle that grows with every breath? No… my Shadow and Blood affinities won't be enough. Not unless I understand their limits—and his.

Vajra raised his hands for silence. "This is the system. This is the future. Each of you will face it. Some will rise as predators. The rest…" He let the pause drag, his smile cruel. "The rest will feed them."

Ajay lowered his head, concealing the flash of resolve in his eyes. He had come to the Red Fang to hide, to observe, to bide his time. But now the stakes had changed. He could no longer just map the hierarchy and play the coward.

If more like him are born… if the world starts filling with Hunters… I won't survive by shadows alone. I need to learn how they fight, how they bleed, and how they die. Before it's too late.

The roar of the gang thundered around him. Ajay stayed still, invisible in plain sight. But inside, his next objective was etched into stone.

A new kind of enemy had just been born.

And sooner or later, he would have to learn how to kill it.
