Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: After the Battle

The cavern was still.

Ash drifted where the Abyssal Shade had once stood, fading into the void above. The four warriors stood among the ruins, their bodies trembling with exhaustion, the silence almost deafening after the storm of battle.

Reinhardt lowered his blade, its glow gone, though faint warmth lingered in the steel. His chest rose and fell in ragged breaths, sweat dripping down his brow.

Elira leaned against her spear, her body shaking. "That… that thing was beyond anything I imagined."

Callen dropped to one knee, laughing weakly despite the blood trickling from his lip. "Hah… hah… but we beat it. We actually beat it."

Alden sat heavily on the ground, gripping his axe as though afraid it might vanish if he let go. "The Shade's gone… but my bones feel like they've been crushed."

For a moment, no one spoke. The weight of survival sank in, heavier than the battle itself.

Then—faintly—the cavern shifted. The walls that had once been suffocating with darkness now pulsed with soft light, revealing ancient markings across the stone. Sigils glowed, intertwining into patterns none of them understood.

At the cavern's center, where the Shade had fallen, a pedestal rose slowly from the ground. Upon it lay a shard of crystal, pulsing with faint radiance.

Reinhardt stepped forward, drawn to it. His hand trembled as he reached out. The crystal's glow reflected in his eyes—reminding him of the light that had surged through his blade.

As his fingers brushed its surface, a voice echoed—not in his ears, but in his soul.

> "Bearer of Will… You have resisted the Abyss. The path of ascension opens… but greater trials await."

The crystal dissolved into light, flowing into Reinhardt's chest. His body jolted, his vision swimming, and for a moment he saw it—

—a glimpse of towering gates, bathed in fire and storm, beyond which lay endless steps spiraling upward.

He gasped and staggered back, clutching his chest.

"Reinhardt?!" Elira grabbed his arm, steadying him.

He shook his head, forcing his breath steady. "I… I saw something. Gates. Higher ground. This trial—it's only the first."

The others exchanged grim looks.

Callen spat blood onto the stone. "Figures. Nothing's ever that easy."

Alden tightened his grip on his axe, eyes still burning. "Then we climb. Whatever's waiting—we climb."

The cavern's light grew brighter, swallowing the broken ground beneath them. The air shifted, weightless. One by one, their bodies were lifted, drawn upward as if the world itself was moving them.

Reinhardt looked up, feeling both dread and determination stir within. The trial wasn't over.

And deep within his chest, the faint warmth of that light still burned.
