Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Into the Ruins

The first light of dawn painted the sky in pale gold. Mist clung to the ground, curling like spirits that refused to leave the ruins. Students stirred from their camps, their laughter and bravado a thin veil over the tension that pressed on them all.

Reinhardt had barely slept. His body rested, but his mind wandered, replaying fragmented visions he couldn't name—echoes of a life both his and not his. When he rose, Elira was already awake, sharpening her spear with deliberate precision. Alden was stretching with a grin, as if the trial was nothing more than a sport. Lyra, quiet as always, hummed a soft hymn under her breath, her silver hair catching the dawn like threads of moonlight.

Professor Calvus's staff struck the stone, silencing the noise.

"The ruins await. Step forward, claim your fate."

The gates of the ancient structure groaned as they opened, stone grinding against stone. Darkness poured out like breath from a sleeping beast.

Inside, the air shifted. It was colder, heavier. The walls were etched with runes that pulsed faintly, like veins carrying forgotten magic. The students spread out, each team taking separate paths deeper into the labyrinth.

Reinhardt's group moved cautiously. Elira led with measured steps, eyes sharp for traps. Alden carried himself with ease but kept close, his hand never far from the hilt of his axe. Lyra lingered behind, her presence faint but steady—like a tether that anchored them to safety.

It didn't take long for the ruins to show their teeth.

The floor ahead collapsed with a snap, stone giving way into a pit lined with jagged spikes. Elira stopped just in time, her spear clattering against the ground as she cursed under her breath. From the shadows, shapes emerged—twisted constructs of stone and metal, their eyes glowing faint blue. Guardians of the Old Era.

"Finally," Alden said with a grin, drawing his axe. "I was getting bored."

The constructs lunged. Reinhardt moved first. His blade flashed, cutting through the first guardian with swift precision. He remembered this—no, he knew this. Their movements, their weaknesses, as if the memory of another life guided his hand.

But the guardians did not fall easily. Shards of broken stone reformed, limbs reshaping, runes blazing brighter.

"Elira—flank them. Alden, break their cores. Lyra, keep us alive," Reinhardt ordered, his voice steady.

The team moved in unison, almost naturally—as though they had trained together for years instead of hours. Sparks flew as steel clashed against enchanted stone, the ruins echoing with the rhythm of battle.

And yet, amidst the clash, Reinhardt felt it again—that pull, that whisper. From deeper within the ruins. Something was calling him.

When the last construct crumbled, silence fell. Their breathing was heavy, but they stood unbroken.

Elira wiped sweat from her brow, studying Reinhardt.

"You've fought these before… haven't you?"

Reinhardt met her gaze but didn't answer. Some truths couldn't be spoken yet—not here, not now.

Instead, he looked into the darkness ahead. The ruins weren't just a trial. They were a memory waiting to be unearthed.

"Let's keep moving," he said. His voice carried quiet resolve, the kind that made his team glance at him with something new in their eyes—trust.

For the first time in this life, Reinhardt wasn't walking alone.
