As one Stormbird gunship after another left the hangar, the last orbital dropship, carrying Fulgrim, gradually slid forward on its tracks.
It was a very unique Stormbird.
Compared to a standard gunship, this one had undergone extensive modifications. Its wings were longer than a Stormbird's and were elegantly swept back in a streamlined curve.
The bow was hooked, a stark contrast to the blunt noses of other gunships.
Paired with the flame paint job on its tail, it looked like a burning phoenix in flight when it was in the sky.
There were even rumors that when passing through the atmosphere, the paint on the wings would actually burn like its name suggested, leaving a bright streak of color across the sky.
The Firebird.
Fulgrim's personal transport.
"Chief Iterant Pyke, please."
Fulgrim's hand never left Kasjia's.
She held him by her side, while her other hand and upper body gave a slight bow, gesturing for the Imperial dignitary.
She and the Emperor's Children warriors behind her had all changed into their bright purple-and-gold glorious battle plate.
As for what Fulgrim was wearing, it was even more magnificent: her emerald-green cape billowed behind her, shining along with the fire-blade at her waist and the bolt pistol named Firebrand.
Even though she looked like a stunningly beautiful woman, no one would dare to question her strength.
Including the man in a servant's clothes she had her arm around, Kasjia.
"You two are surprisingly close."
Although she didn't know why, Iterant Pyke had come to this conclusion.
She glanced at the two with a smile, and her right leg, with some exposed mechanical parts, stepped past them onto the ramp.
"I'm not sure, Fulgrim. Whether this is a long-premeditated plan of yours, or just a little hobby of you two."
"Or both?"
Then, her gaze swept over the embarrassed Kasjia.
"I never thought... that I would see the original couple from The Sagittarius Golden Ring that has taken half the human world by storm."
Wait?
The feigned smile on Kasjia's face instantly vanished.
Let's get this straight first!
"What do you mean, The Sagittarius Golden Ring that has taken half the human world by storm?"
In a place and time that I, Kasjia, did not know, what had this thing become?
Taken half the human world by storm?!
Are you saying that the inhabitants of nearly a million planets know about this—
"Mmph—"
Just as he was about to ask, his mouth and nose were gently covered by a fair and cool hand.
It was very fragrant.
It smelled very good.
"Kasjia, a servant is not qualified to ask questions, you know?"
He was disguised as Fulgrim's personal attendant, and he had to learn to "behave properly."
As for what was proper behavior?
That was, of course, all decided by Fulgrim alone.
As a Primarch, her power within the legion was limitless!
Fulgrim smiled, "Alright, my Emperor's Children, board the ship with me."
Kasjia's sad gaze met those of the several new recruits of the Emperor's Children behind him.
Apart from the six previously designated personnel, Commander Abdemon would also be accompanying them as part of the ceremonial delegation.
And Kasjia clearly saw a hint of pity in the other's eyes.
I know what you mean.
Sometimes, being a boy-toy is not easy.
A master-crafted artisan sword, shield, spear, and armor.
And miracles and magic all come with a price.
Like a certain red-skinned Ogryn's one eye.
The Firebird was navigating through a debris field.
The roaring engine noise, which had been whistling past their ears, was much quieter after Fulgrim's special noise-reduction modifications.
This also gave them an opportunity to talk.
"Lady Pyke, what do you think of the Byzan bureaucrats we are about to face? After reading all the documents you submitted, I am pessimistic about them."
"All of them?"
Pyke was clearly a little surprised by this number.
After their first contact, all the historical materials, literature, and poetic works of art from Byzas had been copied and sent to the 28th Expeditionary Fleet.
Even for a Primarch, it was a major undertaking to read through all of them in the few weeks of Warp travel.
Not to mention the 28th Expeditionary Fleet had just been established, and there were many more tasks and approvals awaiting the legion's Primarch.
Yet she was still able to manage everything in an orderly manner.
"That is a huge number, Lady Fulgrim. Especially given how busy you are."
"Thank you for the compliment, my lady. I like to be hands-on, just like this Firebird we are in. It is also a work of art that I built myself on the armory deck."
"As the Emperor's Children who always strive for perfection, we never rest."
She did not hide the pride in her voice.
"However—"
Her eyes glanced towards Kasjia.
"Even if I use all my heart and soul to pursue perfection, and pour all my love into him, I still can't seem to keep him."
"A bird in a cage still longs for the world outside called the Iron Hands."
"What should I do, Lady Pyke?"
Kasjia felt Fulgrim's hand pinching his waist.
He felt that danger was approaching.
"That's because—"
"Do. Not. Talk. Back."
She said, one word at a time.
Her gaze towards Kasjia was filled with a cold, dissatisfied contempt.
As one of the most beautiful Primarchs in the galaxy, Fulgrim's every frown and smile had an immeasurable destructive power on ordinary people.
Kasjia was no exception.
"Hmph."
And seeing Kasjia defeated and not daring to speak anymore, she snorted lightly.
Like a child who had successfully gotten her revenge, a faint smile unconsciously appeared at the corners of her mouth.
"Lady Fulgrim, your relationship is still so passionate. It is truly rare."
Iterant Pyke also smiled.
"Now let's get down to business."
She straightened up, her expression becoming much more serious.
"There is still a huge gap between poetry, literature, and historical materials and reality."
"But it is not difficult to see that the political system of Byzas is already on the road to destruction."
The overall control of Byzas was in the hands of a noble oligarchy known as the "Thousand Nobles," but it seemed that with the continuous change of power, this title had gradually become less than fitting.
Especially after a tragic civil war.
Of the three continental governments on the surface of Byzas, the southern one had been carpet-bombed with nuclear weapons and had turned into a vitrified ruin.
And with the surrender of the western continent, the entire Byzas had submitted to the rule of the Hereditary Governor Pandion IV.
"Nobles... seriously. I have never thought that these madmen who believe there is some kind of superpower in their bloodline, and thus look down on others, were ever smart."
Fulgrim's smile was full of contempt.
Ever since she and Kasjia had successfully seized power in the Kalliston Fortress on Chemos with a single play, the current Fulgrim had no good feelings for those who prided themselves on their noble bloodline.
Although nearly half of the legion came from the ancient noble families of Terra.
But the nobility of the Emperor's Children had always been in their character, not their origin.
This was also something Kasjia often admonished within the legion.
As a Primarch who had been found and raised by workers, she had always stuck to her position.
The cabin shook slightly.
The change in the engine sound told her that they were gradually entering the atmosphere of Byzas.
[Landing in five seconds.]
An exciting message came from the gunship's sound-array broadcast.
Four,
Three,
Two,
One.
A light scrape with the ground, accompanied by the muffled hiss of the air valve.
The hatch opened.
