Inside Hailing's room
All other lights had been extinguished, replaced by the flames in their hands. Four candles were lit in sequence, illuminating each of their faces.
"This isn't a ghost story session, is it..." Muramasa was the first to complain.
"Heehee, it's more atmospheric this way," Yoimiya, who had proposed the idea, defended it. Originally, they had planned to just share their theories about the battle in order, but before they started, she had felt that would be too dry and changed the format.
"Well then, I'll start…" Hailing was ready to go, eager to share her speculation. "My story is like this…"
It's completely turned into a story now? Muramasa thought to himself and listened quietly.
…
(Hailing's story):
On Nazuchi Beach, a vast army stood on two sides. One side was fully armored with fine horses; the other was bare-faced, trembling with farm tools in their hands.
(Muramasa: Why bare-faced?)
(Yoimiya: Hey, don't interrupt, Muramasa—)
"Charge—" The regular army drew their swords and charged at the enemy. The farmers, seeing the heavy cavalry rushing towards them, could only shout back, "Ura—!!"
The two chaotic groups crashed into each other. The result was, without a doubt, a one-sided slaughter. The horses broke through the crowd, sending the farmers flying! After that, the farmers threw down their weapons and armor and ran back to their fishing boats to retreat.
(Muramasa: ... (was glared at, dared not speak))
However, how could the Shogunate army let this opportunity slip! They immediately boarded their warships and sailed forward, determined to annihilate all enemies! But on Watatsumi Island, a young man had already calculated everything. He appeared in response to their despair! He listened to everyone's final hope!
"O Holy Light, do you see those enemies?"
Then, a beam of judgment descended from the heavens—
…
"What novel have you been reading lately?" Muramasa stared at the slightly carried-away Hailing, pulling her back from her fantasy.
"Ah... that, it's... 'Abyss Overlord'?" The eloquent persona from just now seemed to have retreated back into her body, and she reverted to the timid little girl.
"Well, Miss Hailing, I found it very interesting!" Ayaka chuckled. She had been listening with great interest, readily accepting all the settings.
"Ahem~" Yoimiya cleared her throat. "Next, it's my turn to perform—" At her words, Hailing blew out her candle, and a corner of the room darkened.
"I think the part about the charge at Nazuchi Beach was fine, but what happened after... I think it was like this!"
…
(Yoimiya's story):
The soldiers stomped onto the deck, wanting to press their advantage! But suddenly, a thick fog rose from the island before them... The heavy fog did not deter their determination to win. Even the general had already sworn a military oath: No victory, no return!
So they sailed forward into the fog without hesitation, until they encountered a vortex at sea. One of the ships was directly pulled in. Only then did the army realize that this was a vortex area. The other ships hurriedly retreated, avoiding the fate of being destroyed.
…
"After that, they could only retreat and make plans again—" Yoimiya finished her story, her eyes narrowed and hands on her hips, waiting for the others' evaluation of her theory.
"Hmm... Miss Yoimiya's theory seems to have a certain degree of plausibility." Ayaka stroked her chin thoughtfully. "However, the Tenryou Commission's ships are very large. To have a vortex capable of destroying them... I'm afraid its formation would be rather unpredictable." But since it was just a theory, some deviation was understandable.
"Setting aside other things, the generals this time were the two from the Kujou clan, right?" Muramasa's focus was on a more subtle detail. "No matter what, having them swear a military oath doesn't seem like that old fool's style." The generals leading the expedition were Kujou Takayuki's eldest son and his adopted daughter. One was his own flesh and blood, the other the sharp blade representing the Kujou clan. Neither could be easily discarded. "He looks like he wants his family to last for a thousand generations. How could he let them make that kind of oath… And besides, the fog element is enough. Adding another condition is just redundant."
So Muramasa (Mr. Muramasa) is also very interested… They had thought he was just being forced to tell stories with them, but seeing him talk and think so much, they realized he was actually enjoying it.
Yoimiya also blew out her candle.
"Well then, Mr. Muramasa... shall I go first?" Ayaka offered. "I also have some things to add."
…
(Ayaka's story):
Actually, my thoughts are mainly about what happened on Nazuchi Beach, which conflicts with both of your theories. I do not believe the soldiers would have conducted a large-scale charge there. Of course, I agree with both of you that the disparity in strength was immense. But it is precisely because of this that I feel there was no large-scale conflict.
The leader of Watatsumi Island—the Divine Priestess, Sangonomiya Kokomi—is a very wise person. She would not have allowed her soldiers to be sent to their deaths for no reason. In addition, the fact that they were able to gather a resistance army just to fight against a decree targeting Vision holders shows that they must be very united.
So, the battle on Nazuchi Beach should have been a feint operation—if no one went, the lure would be too obvious. So it should have been a small-scale annihilation battle. The soldiers of Watatsumi Island, after a brief fight, probably either died or fled, but that was all part of the plan. To lure our side into thinking the situation was favorable, with minimal losses, and that we could attack in one fell swoop, and then to take tactical action at sea.
…
"So this is your storytelling style, Miss Kamisato?" Muramasa said, looking as if he had just discovered this.
"P-please don't laugh at me…" Ayaka, who had never been teased before, blushed and, to hide it, quickly blew out her candle.
So, it's my turn… Seeing that only his candle was still lit, Muramasa began to think: Their theories seem to be pretty close. More important than plausibility is that it has to be exciting to satisfy them, right?
"Well then, this old man will help you sort it all out from beginning to end. And add some of my own thoughts…"
