Chapter 20 - Episode 20 – The Last Stand

Twilight Before the Storm

The forest had grown quieter than ever.

No birds. No insects. Not even the wind dared breathe.

The mist hung heavy, silver in the dying light, pressing on the lungs like a wet cloth. Kaen's grip tightened around his weapon, the blade heavy not just from its steel but from the blood it had tasted and the lives it had spared.

His eyes, sharp yet weary, scanned the horizon. No matter how deep the fog curled, he felt them. Watching. Waiting.

Behind him, the remnants of his group moved sluggishly. Fin leaned against a tree, his chest heaving, sweat dripping down his pale skin. Daren sat with his back to the rocks, fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles bled. Lyra tied her hair back, movements sharp to hide her trembling hands. Riku remained still, crouched low, watching the mist as though he could read the unspoken.

The silence was not peace.

It was the kind of silence that comes before thunder.

Kaen finally spoke, his voice low, heavy with fatigue yet burning with resolve.

"They're done toying with us."

Riku gave a faint nod.

"The wolves are changing. Tonight, they don't herd. They hunt."

---

Cutaway – Another Group

Far across the forest, another group of trainees crouched together in the hollow of a fallen tree. Four remained of the seven that started.

Their leader, a boy with a scar under his eye, clutched a jagged spear he had sharpened from a branch. His breath was ragged, but his words were fierce.

"We hold until morning. That's all. They can't get all of us."

But his words rang hollow even to himself.

Because above them, in the branches, the faint outline of a mask gleamed in the moonlight. Watching. Smiling.

The screams came moments later, muffled by the fog.

---

Back at Kaen's camp, the group huddled close to the embers of a dying fire. Hunger gnawed at their bellies, but none dared leave for food. Every sound felt like a trap.

Fin whispered shakily, "Do… do you think anyone else is left out there?"

Lyra's eyes flickered toward him, pity hidden behind steel.

"Does it matter? If they are… they won't be for long."

The fire cracked softly, throwing fleeting shadows across their tired faces.

And then—

A whistle.

Sharp. Cold.

From the east.

Followed by another.

From the west.

The wolves were closing in.

---

The Wolves Unleashed

Kaen rose instantly, his body trembling yet unyielding. His instincts screamed. This wasn't a test anymore. This was extermination.

"Everyone, up!" he barked, sharper than he had ever spoken before.

Riku was already moving, gathering scraps of wood and cloth. "We need fire."

Daren's voice broke, laced with panic. "Fire won't stop them!"

"No," Riku muttered, eyes narrow, "but it will slow them."

The group scrambled, desperation fueling their weary limbs. They tore apart their own shelter, built crude torches, set small traps of burning branches across the path. Sparks danced in the mist, painting fleeting shapes that looked like phantoms.

Fin's hands shook as he lit one of the makeshift firelines. For a moment, the flame reflected in his terrified eyes, making him look like a child holding onto the last shred of hope.

"P-please… let it work."

---

Cutaway – Desperate Survivors

Elsewhere, another band of trainees had set their own defense—a barricade of sharpened sticks, ropes strung between trees. Their leader shouted orders, forcing trembling hands to hold their ground.

But the squad didn't charge recklessly.

They circled. They cut the ropes silently. They dismantled traps without a sound.

And when the trainees realized, it was already too late.

Their barricade became their cage.

The fog swallowed their cries before Kaen's group ever heard them.

---

The first masked warrior appeared through the trees near Kaen's camp. Tall, broad, his presence radiated menace. The firelight flickered across his mask, making it gleam like the face of death itself.

Kaen gritted his teeth. "Hold the line."

The warrior stepped forward—then stopped.

The flames flickered between them.

A pause. A test.

Then, with a chilling calm, the warrior drew his blade and stepped into the fire. Sparks hissed, wood splintered, smoke curled.

Daren cursed loudly, rushing to block the breach. His strike met steel, the clash echoing through the trees. Sparks flew in the fog.

Lyra pulled Fin back, shouting, "Don't break formation!"

Kaen lunged forward, blade cutting through the smoke, his muscles screaming. Every swing felt heavier, every breath shorter—but he did not stop.

The fire traps slowed the enemy, but not for long. And Kaen knew it.

---

Cutaway – A Betrayal

Another team of three survivors huddled near a riverbank. Exhausted. Paranoid.

One of them whispered, "They'll come. They'll come for us."

The leader, shaking, turned to his ally. "Then we sacrifice one. If one of us runs, they'll follow. The rest can survive."

The others stared at him, disbelief turning to horror.

Moments later, the sounds of struggle filled the mist.

And the river carried away the body of the one who had trusted too much.

---

Back with Kaen's group, the second squad member arrived, leaping over the flames with inhuman grace. Now two masked hunters advanced.

Kaen's body ached, his vision blurred, but his voice thundered:

"We don't break. We don't scatter!"

Fin whimpered, clutching his weapon with white knuckles. "Kaen… I-I can't—"

Kaen grabbed his shoulder, eyes burning despite the exhaustion in his face.

"You can. Fear means you're alive. Stay alive."

For a brief, fleeting moment—Fin believed him.

---

Undefeated, Yet Broken

The battle dragged into the depth of night. Time blurred. Every heartbeat felt stolen.

The group fought not like warriors, but like cornered animals. Fire traps flared and died. Barricades splintered. Each strike they made was desperate, fueled by nothing but stubborn will.

Kaen moved like a shadow, his body broken but his instincts perfect. Every swing of his blade screamed defiance. His chest burned, his arms ached, yet he refused to fall.

Lyra covered him, her arrows finding gaps in the fog. Daren struck with raw power, roaring through his exhaustion. Fin—terrified Fin—thrust his blade blindly, every strike clumsy but driven by sheer refusal to die.

And somehow—somehow—they held.

One squad member finally stepped back into the mist, vanishing like a phantom. The other followed, silent as ever.

The wolves had tested them. And for now—they had survived.

---

The forest fell quiet once more.

Kaen dropped to his knees, chest heaving, sweat and blood dripping down his face. His blade slipped from his hands, striking the earth with a dull thud.

Daren collapsed beside him, groaning. Lyra sank to the ground, her hands shaking. Fin sobbed quietly, trembling but alive.

They had not been defeated.

But they were not victorious either.

They were simply… undefeated.

Exhausted. Hollow. Alive only by threads.

Closing Scene – The Wolves Watching

High above, two masked figures stood on a ridge, gazing down into the misty forest. Their silhouettes gleamed under the silver moonlight.

"They endure," one said calmly.

"They break," the other replied coldly. "Not tonight. But soon."

The camera lingered on their shadows as the mist rose, swallowing the world in silver.

And then—black.
