Chapter 21: Whispers in the Dark

The wind howled through the empty streets, carrying with it the faint scent of ash and steel. Le Wai and Mei Lin moved silently through the alleys, their senses sharpened. Every corner felt like a trap waiting to be sprung, every shadow a reminder of the enemy that lurked unseen.

"We're being watched," Mei Lin whispered, her hand instinctively brushing against the hilt of her blade.

Le Wai paused, scanning the rooftops. His instincts screamed at him—eyes were on them, cold and calculating. "He's testing us," Le Wai muttered. "Studying how we move, how we react."

A sudden echo of laughter drifted across the night, low and mocking. It wasn't close, but it wasn't far either. Mei Lin's eyes narrowed. "He wants to rattle you. Don't let him."

But Le Wai's mind was already clouded by old memories. The voice felt too familiar, too haunting—like a ghost from the past refusing to rest. He clenched his jaw, pushing the images away.

Suddenly, a shadow leaped from above. Steel clashed against steel as Le Wai blocked the strike with his blade, sparks flying. The attacker vanished as quickly as he appeared, retreating into the darkness.

"An assassin," Mei Lin hissed. "He's not coming himself—he's sending others."

Le Wai steadied his breath. "Then we force him out. We turn his game against him."

They pressed on, moving toward the heart of the city where the old cathedral stood in ruins. Its shattered spire loomed like a scar against the moonlit sky.

Inside the cathedral, faint symbols glowed on the broken floor—runes etched long ago, pulsing with dark energy. Le Wai felt his chest tighten. "I know this place," he whispered.

Mei Lin studied him, concern flickering across her face. "What happened here?"

Le Wai's voice trembled, though his body stood firm. "This is where I failed them. My comrades… my friends. This is where they died."

The air grew heavier, and from the shadows, another presence emerged—a cloaked figure, faceless, yet emanating malice. A whisper crawled through the cathedral, echoing off the broken walls.

"You can't escape me, Le Wai. The past will devour you, and she cannot save you."

Mei Lin drew her weapon, stepping forward. "Show yourself, coward!"

But Le Wai raised a hand, his eyes fixed on the darkness ahead. For the first time, he wasn't afraid. He understood now—this wasn't just a fight against the mastermind. It was a battle against his own past.

Le Wai tightened his grip on his blade. "Then let the past come. I'll face it head-on."

The runes pulsed brighter, and the cloaked figure advanced, the cathedral trembling with its presence. The true battle was about to begin.
