The door closed behind him.
Daphne remained where she was, her heart was beating unevenly. Her fingers curling into her palms as though she needed the pressure to stay sane. His words replayed in her mind, over and over again, no matter how hard she tried to push them away.
She drew in a breath. Then there was a knock.
"My lady?" Alice called from outside. "We need to leave. Nathaniel needs you."
Daphne turned toward the door immediately. "Yes. Yes, I'm coming."
Alice entered, already reaching for Daphne's cloak. She stopped short when she looked at her properly.
Daphne's smile came a second late. Her eyes were dim in a way Alice didn't like.
"Are you all right?" Alice asked.
Daphne nodded quickly. "I'm fine. Just tired."
