Chapter 14: The Doctor's Gamble
[SYSTEM: Warning. The user is about to undergo a biological procedure. The procedure will stabilize the Silurian and Zygon DNA, but it will be a permanent change. The user will be unable to fully mimic these forms again.]
[Location – The Zygon Medical Bay]
The Zygon medical bay was a sterile, high-tech room, a stark contrast to the shifting, living chaos of the safehouse. Adam lay on a metallic bed, the air filled with the quiet hum of machines.
"This is madness," the Doctor said, his voice a low growl of frustration. "I can't just... use my own DNA to stabilize you. It could kill you. Or it could do something worse. It could permanently link us. I could be a part of your mind for the rest of my life."
"I trust you," Adam said, his voice calm, but his heart was pounding in his chest. "I have no other choice."
Clara stood by the window, her face pale, her hands clenched into fists. "I don't like this, Doctor. It's too risky. What if it goes wrong? What if you hurt him?"
"I won't," the Doctor said, his voice grim but determined. "I won't. I'm the Doctor. I save people. I save people. Even from myself."
He took a deep breath, and he took out his sonic screwdriver. He ran a series of complex calculations, and then, he pointed the screwdriver at a small, unassuming machine. The machine came to life, and a thin, glowing beam of light shot out, hitting Adam's chest.
A searing pain, a burning, agonizing fire, coursed through Adam's body. He screamed, a raw, primal sound of pain, as he felt his bones and organs and every cell of his body being rewritten. He felt the Silurian and Zygon DNA, two conflicting, powerful forces, being harmonized, being tamed.
And then, a new sensation. A cold, quiet stillness. The pain was gone. The screaming was gone. The chaos was gone. He felt a new kind of power. A still, quiet force that was just a part of him. A new kind of being.
He sat up, and he felt a strange, new clarity. He was still Adam. But he was also... more.
[Location – The Zygon Medical Bay]
The Doctor was breathing hard, his face pale, but there was a relieved, triumphant grin on his face. "It worked. It worked! I'm a genius! I'm the Doctor!"
Adam, however, was not smiling. He stood up, and he felt the new power in his bones. He reached for a Silurian sonic screwdriver that lay on a nearby table, and for the first time, he was able to use it, to feel the vibrations of the machine, the hum of the power, without transforming. He had gained a new power. A still, quiet force.
[SYSTEM: Warning. The user's Mimic System has been permanently altered. The user can no longer fully mimic the Silurian and Zygon forms. Recommended action: test the new abilities in a controlled environment.]
Adam felt a cold pang in his gut. He had gained a new power, but he had lost his old one. He had stabilized his DNA, but he had lost his ability to fully transform. He had a choice to make, and he had chosen... a new path.
"I can't turn into them anymore," Adam said, his voice a low, flat whisper. "I have their powers, but I can't be them."
The Doctor's grin faded. "A side effect. I didn't see that coming. But it's better than you being a ticking time bomb. You're stable now. You're a new kind of being. And now, we can fight back."
A loud, piercing alarm blared through the safehouse. Saibra's agents. They had found them.
