Chapter 6 - Chapter 6  A Cold Welcome

Chapter 6 A Cold Welcome

[SYSTEM: Warning. Host and companions have been identified as targets. The user's Zygon DNA has been activated. Recommended use: physical disguise.]

[SYSTEM: User's Ood DNA is picking up unusual psychic activity. The source is a powerful telepathic entity that is not biological.]

[Time – The Next Day – TBD] [Location – A Top-Secret UNIT Base] [Date – TBD]

The UNIT base was a stark, grey monstrosity, all concrete and armed guards. After the betrayal, the Doctor had decided they needed help. They needed allies. They needed UNIT.

The air inside the base was tense, filled with a silent, simmering paranoia. Every soldier, every technician, was on high alert, their eyes darting, their hands resting on their weapons.

Clara, however, was in her element. She walked with a confident stride, her head held high. "They're just on high alert," she said, though her voice was a little too casual. "This is what they do. New threat, old allies. It's a classic."

The Doctor, however, was not convinced. "It's too quiet. No one's talking. No one's looking me in the eye. They're all so... still. I've been to a UNIT base a hundred times, and it's always chaos. This is... unnatural."

Adam, feeling the paranoid atmosphere, was already on edge. The Mimic System was buzzing, a low, constant hum of alarm, and he had a terrible feeling in his gut.

They were led into a large, sterile antechamber. The doors slid shut behind them with a hiss, and a low, mechanized voice echoed through the room. "Please remain in this antechamber. Director Stewart will be with you shortly."

A minute passed. Then two. The tension in the air was so thick you could cut it with a knife.

Then, the doors opened again, and a woman in a perfectly pressed military uniform, her face a mask of cold, professional caution, entered. It was Kate Stewart. The head of UNIT.

"Doctor," she said, her voice flat. "I'm glad you could make it."

"Kate!" the Doctor said, a relieved smile on his face. "What's wrong? What's going on here? Everyone is... acting strange."

Kate's eyes, however, never left Adam and Clara. "We have received a grave warning, Doctor. A mimic has infiltrated our defenses. A new, powerful enemy that can perfectly copy a person's physical form. We've had a number of incidents. We can't trust anyone."

"A mimic?" the Doctor said, his brow furrowing. "But I've got a sonic screwdriver. I can detect that sort of thing!"

"We've been told your sonic screwdriver won't work on this one," Kate said, and her voice was filled with a terrible, chilling certainty. "The enemy is not a simple mimic. It's a perfect copy. Down to the molecular level. It's a temporal mimic. It's from a different timeline. It's an older you. A colder you. And it's here to destroy us."

The Doctor's eyes went wide with shock. "You think... you think one of you is me from the future?"

"No," Kate said, and her gaze finally landed on the Doctor, her eyes filled with a sad, terrible pity. "We don't think one of them is the mimic. We think... you are."

[Time – A Few Moments Later – TBD] [Location – UNIT's Detention Room] [Date – TBD]

The doors of the detention room slammed shut with a final, echoing clang. They were trapped. The Doctor, Clara, and Adam. The room was bare, with a single metal table and three metal chairs.

"Kate!" the Doctor screamed, his voice strained. "What are you doing? I'm the Doctor! I saved this planet a hundred times!"

A speaker on the wall crackled to life. "I know, Doctor. But we have to be sure. My source is a hundred percent reliable. This is a simulation. A test. The real threat is not a mimic. It's a time-altering entity, and it's using a temporal mimicry to test your abilities and your allies. The real Kate and UNIT are not here. This is a game."

Adam's mind reeled. A simulation? A game? His own reality was a test? He felt the Ood's psychic DNA give a weak, trembling hum. Something was wrong.

[SYSTEM: Warning. The user is being deceived. The entity is lying. This is not a simulation. This is a trap. The entity is a Time Lord in disguise, seeking to acquire the user's MIMIC SYSTEM.]

Adam's head snapped up. The Doctor was still yelling at the speaker, arguing with a disembodied voice. Clara was watching him, a worried look on her face.

"Doctor," Adam said, his voice a low growl. "Stop. This isn't a simulation. It's real. And the mimic isn't a future you. It's a Time Lord. They're lying to us. They want me."

The Doctor stopped, turning to look at Adam. "What are you talking about?"

"The System," Adam said, his voice strained. "It told me. They're lying. This isn't a test. It's a trap. And they want to get their hands on me. On my Mimic System. They're a Time Lord. And they're in here with us."

Clara's eyes went wide with a dawning horror. The speaker on the wall remained silent. And the low hum of the Mimic System in Adam's mind intensified, a cold, unyielding warning. The Time Lord mimic was here. And they were about to make their move.
