Chapter 144: An Invitation
May 2, 2023 Author: Yue Shang Xintou
New York West Precinct.
After waiting for nearly twenty minutes, Colin was led by the late-arriving police officers to an interrogation room at a nearby precinct.
"Shut up, you damn scum..."
"Please, let me go!"
"I'm innocent, I didn't do it, I've been framed."
"I only speak to my lawyer."
"Homeless people, homeless people, it's always those damn homeless people! Isn't there anywhere we can lock them all up!"
Through the one-way glass, Colin could clearly hear everything happening inside the precinct.
The persistently high crime rate had made every police precinct in New York City overcrowded. Besides dealing with an endless stream of criminal incidents, the police also had to face large numbers of protesting citizens. The corruption issues exposed in the newspapers prior had particularly impacted their work severely.
"Who's this guy?"
"Don't know, his statement says he was attacked..."
At the entrance of the interrogation room, Colin could hear police officers conversing in hushed tones.
Then, a police officer pushed open the door and entered, looking at Colin inside.
"Mr. Collin Roper, please sign here, and you can leave."
The officer handed over a confession statement and said with a blank expression.
Picking up the pen and writing his name, Colin casually asked.
"What about those attackers? Are they going to jail?"
"That's not your concern."
However, the police officer's attitude was unexpectedly cold.
Glancing at the officer in front of him, Colin couldn't help but frown. "As the victim of the incident, don't I have the right to know?"
Facing Colin's questioning, the officer's expression was dismissive.
"Please trust the police, Mr. Collin Roper, we will handle everything."
Seeing the officer's perfunctory attitude, Colin understood. Clearly, they didn't take his situation very seriously.
With that, Colin didn't press the matter further. He handed the signed confession statement back and turned to leave.
"How was it? Did you handle it?"
"It's done."
Before leaving the police station, Colin's weakened version of Super Hearing, as expected, picked up the conversation of the officer who had asked him to sign.
Stepping out of the New York West Precinct, he saw the very group who had attacked him at the station walking brazenly out of the police station.
Clearly, not only had they not been locked up, they had, just like Colin, walked out of the police station.
Sensing Colin's gaze, several young men sneered at him and made a finger-gun gesture. Following that, they laughed and got into a car that had been waiting for them at the police station entrance.
Watching their arrogant demeanor, Colin, standing still, narrowed his eyes. His gaze casually drifted to the road surface outside the police station entrance, and he casually picked up a piece of gravel to play with.
Whoosh—
*Bang!*
"What happened?!"
Immediately after, with a deafening crash,
Police officers inside the precinct rushed out in a panic. The loud noise had almost made them think they were under bomb attack.
"It's a car accident!"
A few minutes later, these officers confirmed the situation: a car had suddenly lost control on the road and crashed into the precinct wall.
"Damn it, why right at the police station entrance."
"Quick, get some people to check the situation..."
Watching the police outside shout and start the rescue operation, Colin withdrew his gaze. He ignored the group inside the car who were bleeding from their heads and instead hailed a taxi, leaving the accident scene.
...
[Power - Flight (Bronze)]
Over the next few days.
In the Anti-World, apart from Oscorp announcing Norman Osborn's death, which caused a stock market crash, nothing else of major significance occurred.
During this time, Colin had also successfully upgraded his Flight ability to the Bronze level.
With the upgrade, Flight allowed for more freedom of movement.
Furthermore, this ability had also been partially enhanced in the Main World. Colin had conducted experiments, and when fully utilizing this ability, he could easily leap over a skyscraper.
Evidently, with the serialization of the Superman comic, he was getting closer and closer to the Superman of the initial settings in the Main World.
This was undoubtedly good news for Colin.
...
"Mr. Collin Roper, our boss would like to meet you."
The day after The Messenger Newspaper was published, on Monday morning.
Several figures dressed in suits and wearing baseball caps intercepted Colin on his way to work.
"Your boss?"
Stopping in his tracks, Colin glanced at the clearly ill-intentioned individuals in front of him. He showed no panic, but instead calmly asked, "Who?"
"You'll know when we get there."
The leader did not provide an answer to Colin's question but instead pointed to a car nearby.
Turning his head to scan the car parked by the roadside, Colin inexplicably recalled the scene he had witnessed at the police station entrance earlier.
Those attackers who had confronted him at the police station had also emerged in a similar fashion.
Raising an eyebrow and dismissing the images in his mind,
Colin, without any hesitation, immediately got into the car.
"..."
Seeing his cooperative attitude, the individuals responsible for the 'invitation' looked taken aback and exchanged glances.
They had initially expected to have to persuade Colin or resort to some means to bring him to their boss.
Who would have thought the target would be so cooperative?
It rendered all their prepared methods useless.
Of course, regardless of how it happened, it was always good when the invited party was willing to cooperate.
Especially since the boss had reminded them before the action to try and invite the person over using gentle means.
Thus, seeing Colin get into the car, they exchanged looks and quickly reacted. The leader got into the front passenger seat, while the others got into another car behind them.
In the front passenger seat, the leader adjusted his baseball cap and nodded at the driver.
As the car drove, the leader, responsible for this operation, couldn't help but look up at the rearview mirror. In the back seat, Colin, the subject of this invitation, was sitting leisurely, casually flipping through a newspaper.
There wasn't the slightest hint of tension from being forcibly taken away.
Seeing his demeanor, even the leader almost felt like he had genuinely invited Colin to meet the boss.
