I was only seven years old when my mother introduced me to a new man—my stepfather. He worked at a construction site, his skin darkened from the sun, his hands rough from endless labor. To me, at first, he was nothing more than an unfamiliar uncle who, for reasons I couldn't quite understand, had fallen for my mother's beauty and charm.
One evening, my mother sat beside me, her eyes glowing with excitement as she began narrating her love story.
