Chapter 19 - Detective Selena

"Selena. Are you sure you want to work in this field? A woman like you with good academic scores could choose a better job than this."

A woman five years older than Selena, who was twenty at the time, smoked a cigarette while talking to Selena. This was her first day on duty as a detective.

Selena nodded enthusiastically, "I want to see what real detective work is like. When I was little, I often admired the detectives in movies who dared to solve cases, no matter how complicated or difficult it is. They are the revealers of truth in the darkness!"

The smoking woman gave a small smirk.

"Truth, huh."

They were in front of the crime scene of a serial murder report.

Patrol police happened to find the nest of the serial killer who had recently become infamous in the city. They caught the killer right after he finished killing someone in a dirty apartment in a densely populated residential district.

Selena and her senior waited at the door, waiting for the police to finish dealing with the perpetrator and the crime scene so that detectives could investigate more safely.

Inside the apartment, sometimes the serial killer had set up several traps for anyone who dared to enter and investigate his room. Therefore, the police were tasked with securing the crime scene first and checking for dangerous objects like bombs stored there.

"Detective Laura, everything is under control. The killer has been apprehended and is ready to talk before we take him to the police station for further interrogation."

The woman named Laura threw her cigarette away, then stepped on it to make sure it was completely extinguished.

"Ah, I don't know if this can be called luck or misfortune. It's a shame you're on duty on a day like this, Selena."

Selena followed her senior into the serial killer's apartment.

What she saw inside immediately made her face turn pale and her stomach churn. Selena even started to feel like she was going to vomit.

"Ugh." The smell of corpses and human body parts scattered on the floor mingled with neglected trash. Several black plastic baskets were full, swarming with flies and maggots. There was one freshly mutilated corpse, judging by the still-wet red blood on the floor.

Selena couldn't believe someone actually slept and lived hidden here. The serial killer, identified by the initials FG, was kneeling with both hands cuffed behind his back. His body was thin despite his height. His face was horrifying, full of unkempt beard and blood-stained scratches. His hair was short, messily cut.

"If you want to vomit, just vomit. The police who came here also vomited as soon as they entered this room."

Selena shook her head while clenching her fists. "No, I can still hold on."

"Oh, I see."

Detective Laura immediately squatted in front of the serial killer.

"Twenty young female victims. After raping and torturing them to death, you mutilated their bodies and dumped them in the nearby river. For someone who has killed twenty people, you're quite stupid, aren't you?"

"Hehehe."

The killer with the initials FG giggled eerily. There were three police officers in the apartment room, which was filled with a pungent, foul smell. Countless flies nested there, laying their eggs that turned into maggots among the piles of mutilated flesh and bones in stacked black plastic baskets.

"What's your reason for doing all this? Well, I don't care anyway. You'll definitely get the death penalty in court later."

"Women like you. I really love the faces of women like you screaming in terror and wetting themselves as their limbs are severed while I rape them. I feel alive doing things like that.

"This world is rotten. People like you who think they are prettier, better, richer than the ugly and bad poor people always look down on us. Seeing the faces of arrogant people like you screaming in pain and crying loudly is so satisfying! This world is rotten! That's why I did it! HaHAHAhHahahhAhahahHAAhHah!"

"Ah~ what a waste of time."

Detective Laura drew her weapon and pointed her pistol at the forehead of the laughing serial killer.

Bang!

"Eh?" Selena froze at that moment. Blood splattered on her face. She was shocked. Why did her senior kill the serial killer at the crime scene?

What made her feel even stranger was that no police officer objected to seeing the man executed on the spot. Their face seems nonchalant and don't care any of it. Didn't he still have the right to a trial?

As soon as she thought about it, her stomach became very nauseous. She left the apartment and immediately vomited everything in her stomach.

"Bluweghh..."

"We'll leave the rest to the forensic team and the cleaning team. Uncuff that man and report to our chiefs that the serial killer died by suicide. We don't need to waste operational budget on a useless person like him."

"Yes, ma'am."

The police officers watching on the spot immediately acted according to Detective Laura's instructions. She then approached Selena, who was kneeling and vomiting.

"Are you alright?"

"Why did senior do that?" Selena asked, trembling.

Detective Laura, outside the apartment, took out another cigarette and lit it with a match.

After calmly taking a puff and exhaling the smoke into the air, she said.

"You are both very lucky and unlucky. This is not a job suitable for a pure heart like yours, Selena. Our job, which is in the gray area, is indeed like this. You have to get used to it if you don't want to lose your 'humanity'. Get rid of unnecessary empathy and sympathy for criminals. Otherwise, one day you will end up like them."

Selena cried. She cried because she felt this was a very sad thing. That night she recognized another side of the world she had never known.

After the serial killer case, Selena continued to work hard under the guidance of Detective Laura. The two solved many horrific cases that even the police could not handle.

After ten years, she is now known as a cold-hearted detective. A title held by her senior. Selena never smiled at work and was always serious about handling every case related to rape, murder, and other things.

She did that with the intention in her heart to uphold justice for the victims. Nevertheless, every time she solved a case, her humanity slowly eroded. Until Vincent appeared at her doorstep, becoming a hope for her, for her humanity to stay alive.

Starry night sky. Wavy night sea. Blowing night wind.

Vincent and Selena were still lying on the beach, enjoying these three things while holding hands.

Vincent yawned several times due to sleepiness. He really hadn't slept for two days. On bus the way here morning, he only managed to sleep for about ten minutes.

"Vincent. Let's masturbate."

Selena turned her head to Vincent, who was yawning. Her empty hand moved to caress Vincent's stomach.

"No. I want to sleep!"

"Come on, at least once, let's masturbate together tonight."

"No!!!"

Vincent held Selena's hand, which was already impatient like a hungry predator wanting to touch Vincent's erect shaft hidden in his shorts. They wrestled like wrestlers, rolling in the sand.

"Stepbrother! Vani! Vani has been kidnapped!"

Vittoria ran from the hotel to Vincent and Selena. She ran, panting.

"Kidnapped?" Vincent immediately put on a serious face. Just like Selena, who had now switched to her detective mode. She was no longer acting like a child.

"Where? And when did it happen?"

Selena, Vincent, and Vittoria immediately returned to the hotel.

In the lobby, Violet and Vivian, who were as panicked as Vittoria, immediately explained the chronology of events to Vincent and Selena.

"After we finished dinner and were about to go upstairs to rest. Vani said she wanted to get some ice cream available on the dining room floor. After thirty minutes of waiting, Vani still hadn't returned, and after we asked the hotel staff, they saw Vani with a big man leaving from here."

"Huh?" Vincent was speechless and immediately ran out of the hotel with Selena to check the parking lot.

"We won't know who left thirty minutes ago if it's like this. We also don't know if he brought a vehicle or not." Vincent saw many cars and motorcycles in the parking lot. He was confused about how he would know who took Vani away from the hotel.

Violet, Vittoria, and Vivian followed, breathing heavily. They were as panicked as Vincent upon hearing that Vani, the youngest and most innocent girl in their family, had been kidnapped by an unknown person.

Selena, on the other hand, remained calm even though her chest was heaving from running in a hurry. She saw a CCTV camera installed on the lamppost. Then she immediately opened her phone and called her sister, Grace.

"Grace, go to the hotel's CCTV control room. Tell them to replay the footage from thirty minutes ago and report to me a girl and a big man who left this hotel, quickly!"

Grace answered briefly in the corridor, "Yes. I'm on my way there, sis!" She ran quickly towards the control room, ignoring the confused hotel staff who saw a woman suddenly barging into the staff-only room.

"Hey! This is a staff-only room!"

"Shut up! There's a kidnapping case involving our family happening. You! All of you! Immediately replay the footage from thirty minutes ago. Pay attention to every CCTV and report to me the figures of a girl and a big man walking together."

The CCTV control staff immediately did as Grace ordered without many questions, knowing that a critical kidnapping case was underway.

They checked the footage from thirty minutes ago and then fast-forwarded it until Vani and the big man appeared.

"Stop! There!" Grace pointed to CCTV number 20 installed in front of the hotel entrance. "Pay attention to those two people!"

The control staff watched where the man and the girl went. They walked towards the underground parking lot and got into a black sedan.

"They got into a black sedan, sis!"

"What's the license plate number?"

"Stop! Zoom in on the sedan's license plate!" Grace pointed while focusing her eyes on reading the license plate number of the car that took Vani.

"Sis! The car's license plate number is KT75 ZYD!"

Selena, who had been connected with Grace all this time, nodded in confirmation.

"Vincent, get the motorcycle ready! We're going after the kidnapper!"

Vincent nodded and ran into the hotel to borrow a motorcycle.

Selena then called another number from her phone, calling a friend who worked in the tracking division of her office.

"Pep here. What's up calling me this late, Selena? I'm working overtime at the office."

"Peppy! I need your help to track license plate KT75 ZYD as soon as possible!"

"Eh? What's wrong? Is there an emergency case?"

"Just do it quickly! My niece was kidnapped thirty minutes ago, and I'm going after her!"

"A-a-alright!"

The sound of fast typing on the office computer was heard. After one minute had passed and Vincent had already put on his helmet and brought a large motorcycle from the underground parking lot belonging to one of the hotel staff. Peppy, one of the investigators on Selena's team who specialized in technology investigation sent the coordinate location to Selena.

"I've sent the coordinates."

"Alright! Thanks, Pep!" Selena immediately hung up the phone and got on the motorcycle Vincent was riding.

"Where are we going?" Vincent asked while Selena was looking at the coordinates given on her phone. It was about five kilometers from the hotel.

"Fast food restaurant to the west!"

Vincent twisted the throttle of the big motorcycle hard while stepping on the clutch.

The two immediately sped off, leaving Vivian, Vittoria, and Violet with worried faces.

"I hope they succeed in bringing Vani back." Vittoria said softly. Her older sister and mother nodded.

...

"By the way, who are you?" The supervisory staff asked Grace, who was only wearing adult underwear. She had actually just finished showering and was about to put on clothes. When she heard the news that Vani had been kidnapped and her sister called her, she forgot her clothes and immediately did what her sister told her to do as quickly as possible, checking the CCTV in the control room.

Now her whole body was red with embarrassment from being stared at by the supervisory staff, all of whom were men.

"Ah.. yes.. um... Excuse me.." Grace slowly stepped back and ran as fast as she could back to her room.
