Chapter 28 - The Shifted Present

Emma fell asleep with the workbook open, heart aching.

When she woke, the apartment felt… different. Subtle, but undeniable. Photographs weren't the same. She staggered closer, heart pounding.

In one, she stood with Ethan on their wedding day—but the backdrop was no seaside villa. Instead, they were in front of a quiet chapel, intimate and small.

Her breath quickened. She scanned the counters, the bookshelf, the drawers. Things were missing. Others were new. The apartment seemed unchanged—but the life inside it had shifted.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Ethan. Not the cold, clipped words she had grown accustomed to during their divorce proceedings. This one read:

Morning, love. Meeting ran late last night. Dinner tonight? Just us. I miss you.

Emma dropped the phone, knees buckling. The moment she had told young Ethan about Diana, her present had rewritten itself.
