Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: The Ice Phoenix’s Cage

The transaction was completed in a back room of the Spire, away from the prying eyes of the nobles.

Rylan handed over the heavy chest of spirit stones. It contained twenty thousand—everything the Gear-Grinders had earned, everything from the Syndicate's fee, and every loose coin Lyra had scavenged.

The auctioneer counted it, smiling thinly. He handed Rylan a heavy iron key and a small jade talisman.

"The key for the cage," the auctioneer said. "And the talisman controls the Suppression Collar. Press it, and she feels the pain of a thousand needles. Shatter it, and the collar deactivates."

He leaned in.

"A word of advice, Mr. Sterling. Do not shatter it. She is a Peak Stage Foundation Establishment cultivator. If she regains her power without a master to bind her... she will freeze the blood in your veins."

Rylan pocketed the talisman. "I'll keep that in mind."

He walked out to the loading dock. Toran and the Earth-Kin were loading the cage onto their reinforced wagon. Inside, Sylara sat motionless, her silver eyes fixed on the middle distance. She looked like a statue carved from ice and hate.

"We are broke," Lyra whispered, checking the empty ledger. "Rylan, we have enough coal for two days. The Earth-Kin need food. The bribes for the gate guards are due tomorrow."

"We'll figure it out," Rylan said, climbing onto the driver's bench.

"How? We can't sell more weapons without flooding the market. We can't raid the Syndicate. You just spent our entire war chest on a woman who wants to kill us!"

"She is an investment," Rylan repeated. "And high-yield investments always carry risk."

As the wagon rumbled out of the Spire's pristine courtyard and back into the smog of the lower districts, a shadow blocked their path.

It was Garrick.

The slaver stood with four of his heavy enforcers. He wasn't wearing his Syndicate armor; he was dressed for a street brawl. He looked at the cage, then at Rylan.

"You overpaid, Blacksmith," Garrick growled.

"It was an auction," Rylan said, keeping his hand near his sword. "The highest bidder wins. That's how civilization works."

"Civilization stops at the Rust Gate," Garrick spat. "You think you can just walk into the city, arm the champion, and buy the prize? You're moving too fast, Sterling. People trip when they run."

He stepped closer to the wagon. He reached through the bars and grabbed a handful of Sylara's silver hair.

"She breaks easily," Garrick sneered at her. "I've broken a dozen like her. Ice melts when you apply enough fire."

Sylara didn't flinch. She slowly turned her head. She looked at Garrick's hand, then at his face. Her expression didn't change, but the air around the wagon dropped ten degrees. Frost formed on the iron bars.

"Touch me again," Sylara whispered, her voice raspy from disuse, "and I will ensure your ancestors feel the cold."

Garrick laughed, but he pulled his hand back. The metal bar was frozen solid where she had looked at it.

"Enjoy her," Garrick said to Rylan. "While you can. The Syndicate protects its partners, but accidents happen in the Slag District."

He spat on the ground and signaled his men to move.

Rylan watched him go.

"He's going to hit us," Toran said, his mechanical arm whirring nervously. "Garrick doesn't make threats. He makes promises."

"Let him come," Rylan said. "Drive."

The return to the warehouse was tense.

When they rolled the cage inside, the atmosphere shifted. Mei looked up from her blueprints, her eyes widening at the sight of the prisoner. Lena, sensing the potent, wounded aura of the woman, rushed forward but stopped when she saw the collar.

"A slave?" Lena asked, her voice trembling. "Rylan... you bought a slave?"

"I bought a warrior," Rylan said. "Mei, Toran, secure the perimeter. Lyra, get the ledger. We need to find money by morning. Lena... bring water and clean clothes."

"I am not dressing her," Lena said, standing her ground. "This is wrong. We are fighting tyrants, not becoming them."

"She is a Foundation Establishment Peak cultivator," Rylan snapped, his patience fraying. "If we leave her in the pits, Garrick kills her. If we let her go, the collar kills her. I am the only option she has."

He grabbed the key and walked to the cage.

He unlocked the door.

Sylara didn't move. She looked up at him. Up close, her beauty was terrifying—sharp, angular, and flawless. The "Ice Phoenix Body" wasn't just a cultivation term; she radiated an ethereal, avian grace.

"Get out," Rylan ordered.

Sylara stood up. She was tall, nearly Rylan's height. She stepped out of the cage, her bare feet silent on the concrete floor. She looked around the warehouse—the soot, the scrap, the Earth-Kin.

Her lip curled.

"A trash heap," she said cold ly. "Is this where the 'Blacksmith of Death' reigns?"

"It's a forge," Rylan said. "We build things here."

"You build shackles," Sylara said, touching the collar. "You are just another master with a different leash."

Rylan pulled out the jade talisman. The control unit.

Sylara flinched. She knew what that stone could do.

Rylan held it up. Then, he tossed it to Lyra.

"Put it in the safe," Rylan ordered.

Lyra caught it, stunned. "Rylan? If she attacks..."

"She won't," Rylan said, locking eyes with Sylara. "Because she wants what I have."

"And what is that?" Sylara asked, her eyes narrowing. "Your money? You spent it all on me. Your power? You are barely Foundation Establishment. I could freeze you solid in a heartbeat if this collar were off."

"Vengeance," Rylan said.

The word hung in the air.

Rylan stepped closer, invading her personal space. He lowered his voice so only she could hear.

"I know who you are. Sylara of the Frost-Moon Sect. I know the Jade Empire destroyed your sect. I know they sold you to the syndicates to fund their war in the south."

Sylara's breath hitched. The mask of indifference cracked. "How..."

"I make it my business to know my enemies," Rylan lied—he had guessed based on the auctioneer's description and the current war map. "The Jade Empire is my enemy too. They burned my home. They hunted me."

He pointed to the south.

"I am going to destroy them, Sylara. Root and stem. And I am building an army to do it."

He looked at the collar.

"I can't take that off yet. You are too unstable. And I don't trust you. But..."

He reached out and touched the collar. It was cold metal against his skin.

"Serve me. Fight for me. Help me build this empire. And when the Jade Empire burns... I will let you light the match. And then, I will break this collar myself."

Sylara stared at him. She searched his eyes for the lie, for the lust, for the cruelty she had seen in Garrick and the others.

She saw the Imperial Aura. It wasn't soft. It wasn't kind. It was ambitious. It was a hunger that matched her own hate.

"You want my power," Sylara whispered. "You practice a dual cultivation art. I can feel it on you. You want my Yin essence."

"I do," Rylan admitted without shame. "Your Ice Phoenix Body will stabilize my foundation and push me to the next level. I use everything, Sylara. My people. My resources. Myself. And you."

It was the brutal honesty that convinced her. He wasn't pretending to be a savior. He was proposing a trade.

Sylara lowered her head slightly. It wasn't a bow. It was a nod.

"If you lie," Sylara said, her voice dropping to a glacial whisper, "I will not just kill you. I will freeze your soul and shatter it into a thousand pieces."

"Fair enough," Rylan said.

He turned to Lena.

"Show her to the quarters. Feed her. Let her wash. But the collar stays on."

Lena looked at Sylara, then at Rylan. She saw the transaction that had just occurred. It wasn't slavery. It was a pact with a demon.

"Come," Lena said softly to Sylara.

As the women walked away, Lyra approached Rylan.

"You handled her," Lyra said. "But Rylan... the money. We are still broke."

Rylan looked at the empty cage.

"Not entirely," Rylan said. "Garrick threatened us. He said accidents happen."

"Yes?"

"Garrick runs the slave pits," Rylan said, a dark smile forming. "Which means he has a warehouse full of 'inventory.' Inventory he stole from refugees."

"Rylan, no. You can't raid the Slave King. That's declaring war on the Syndicate."

"Garrick isn't the Syndicate," Rylan corrected. "He's a freelancer who pays dues, just like us. If he has an 'accident'... and his inventory disappears..."

He picked up his sword.

"Toran," Rylan barked. "Get the boys. We're going to work the night shift."
