Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Realm Below

The moment they stepped further into the tunnel, the air changed. It was heavier, almost electric, and Janae could feel it thrumming against her skin. Every nerve in her body screamed that they weren't in the normal world anymore.

Sezzle kept close, whispering, "This place… it's… unreal. I mean, look at this—do you think it's even real?"

Janae didn't answer immediately. Her focus was inward, stretching her senses to feel the tunnel, the walls, the shadows. The pulsing energy responded to her, almost like it was alive. Her hands tingled. She concentrated, willing herself to extend the awareness she had felt in the theater.

A shimmer of movement flickered in the corner of her eye—too fast for Sezzle to notice. Janae froze, holding her breath. Something is here. Watching. Waiting.

Sezzle tugged at her sleeve. "Janae… what is it? What did you see?"

"I… don't know," Janae admitted, voice tight. "But I think… I can sense them. Whoever—or whatever—is following us. We need to keep moving, quietly."

They crept forward, Janae guiding them by instinct rather than sight. The tunnel opened into a vast cavern, walls etched with glowing symbols that pulsed with light in rhythm with Janae's heartbeat. Strange, translucent shapes floated in the air—like echoes of people, but distorted, unnatural.

Sezzle's jaw dropped. "This… this is insane. How is this real?"

Janae focused again, reaching out with her senses. She felt a tug, subtle but insistent—something wanted them to go deeper. And then, a sharp vibration, like a warning, shot through her chest. The thing following them wasn't far behind.

"Sez…" she whispered. "Whatever's chasing us—it's closer now. We have to—"

A sudden roar echoed, shaking the cavern walls. Sezzle screamed, stumbling backward, but Janae caught her just in time. Shadows twisted in the light of their phones, forming shapes too dark, too fast, to fully comprehend.

Janae's instincts kicked in. She reached out with the energy thrumming inside her, extending it toward the shadows. For a moment, the dark shapes recoiled, like her awareness was a barrier they couldn't cross.

"Janae… what did you do?!" Sezzle gasped.

"I… I don't know yet," Janae admitted. "But I think… this power—it's real. And it's ours to use. We have to keep going."

Ahead, a faint glow marked a path deeper into the cavern, the only hint of direction in the alien, shifting space. The girls exchanged a look—fear, determination, and the silent promise to survive whatever came next.

And in the shadows, unseen but moving closer, the thing that had followed them from the theater waited patiently. It knew they were awake now—and it wasn't going to let them leave.

The girls moved cautiously along the glowing path, Janae's heartbeat echoing in sync with the pulsing symbols on the cavern walls. Every step felt heavier than the last, as if the air itself was pressing down on them, thick with energy that was almost alive.

Sezzle shivered, hugging her arms. "I hate this. I hate all of this. Why did we even come down here?"

Janae didn't answer. Her focus was outward, stretching her awareness toward the shadows flitting just beyond the glow of their flashlights. She felt the presence again—the one following them from the theater—its hunger and patience coiling around them like a living thing.

Ahead, the cavern widened, revealing an enormous stone archway carved with symbols that twisted and shifted when looked at too long. From somewhere deep within, a low hum resonated, vibrating through their bones.

Janae held up a hand, stopping Sezzle. "Wait… do you feel that?"

Sezzle frowned. "Feel what?"

"The energy. It's… changing. It's alive. And… it's trying to tell me something." Janae closed her eyes, letting her senses stretch, reaching into the vibrations of the cavern. Shadows moved along the walls, whispering unintelligible sounds that tickled the edge of her mind. One of them—a shape dark and humanoid—paused at the edge of her perception, just out of reach.

Sezzle noticed Janae's stance stiffen. "Janae… what is it? Tell me!"

Janae opened her eyes, her voice low and steady. "Something's here. Watching. And… it's smart. It knows we're alive. We have to keep moving, and whatever we do, we cannot panic."

The girls crept closer to the archway. Janae's phone light illuminated strange glyphs carved into the stone—some flickering like they were breathing. She reached out a hand, and the symbols pulsed under her touch, almost as if recognizing her energy. A wave of heat shot through her fingers, and she stumbled back, gasping.

"Whoa! What just—" Sezzle began, but a sudden, sharp screech cut her off. The shadows surged from the corners of the cavern, writhing and twisting toward them.

"Run!" Janae yelled, grabbing Sezzle's hand. But as they turned, the shadows recoiled slightly, like her awareness was a shield. She pushed the sensation further, letting the energy hum through her, a force she didn't fully understand but instinctively controlled. The shadows hesitated.

Sezzle's eyes went wide. "Janae… you did something. You… stopped them?"

Janae shook her head, panting. "I don't know yet… but I think I can control this. I have to."

They sprinted through the cavern, the glow from the symbols lighting a path that twisted and shifted unpredictably. Behind them, a soft, deliberate shuffle echoed—the thing from the theater was here, and it wasn't giving up.

As they reached another tunnel branching off the cavern, a cold wind blew from the darkness ahead. Janae paused, hand on Sezzle's shoulder.

"This path… it's dangerous. But it's the only way forward. We have to take it… together."

Sezzle swallowed hard, nodding. "Lead the way. Just… please don't let anything grab me."

Janae took a deep breath, feeling the energy pulse in her chest, stronger than before. The shadows flickered at the edges of her vision, waiting, but she was beginning to realize something terrifying—and thrilling. She wasn't powerless here. Not anymore.

And somewhere deep in the darkness, the creature that had followed them from the theater waited, patient, intelligent… and hungry.
