Long ago, during the age of myth, two dragons clashed high above the heavens. Their battle was so fierce that it forced the warring angels, fallen angels, and devils to call a truce and join forces—if only to put a stop to the chaos these two brought.
Annoyed at being interrupted, the dragons turned their fury on the three factions. The result? All sides suffered devastating losses. In the end, the leaders of the three factions shattered the dragons' bodies, sealing their souls into humans as Sacred Gears.
Yet, even sealed, the two dragons never ceased their rivalry. Through countless hosts, they met and fought again and again, their feud echoing through the ages.
These two legendary terrors? None other than the infamous Two Heavenly Dragons—
The Red Dragon Emperor, Ddraig, and the White Dragon Emperor, Albion.
Their names inspired fear in gods and devils alike. Who could have guessed that these so-called "Heavenly Dragons," infamous for their destruction, were both—female?
If this got out, jaws all over the supernatural world would hit the floor. It wasn't that female dragons were rare, but everything about their legacy—their titles, their voices, even the way people talked about them—screamed "male." Tenra himself had always subconsciously thought of Ddraig as a guy. The idea that she might be a "she" had never even crossed his mind.
Dragon names weren't exactly gendered, and their voices, deep and commanding, always leaned toward the masculine for intimidation's sake. Over centuries, that habit had cemented a collective misconception.
Now that he knew the truth, Tenra couldn't help feeling like he'd stumbled into the middle of a soap opera.
No wonder Ddraig had freaked out over the kendo girls pawing her armor. Unless you were chasing some kind of "true love" fantasy, anyone would be grossed out by being groped by a bunch of the same gender. For the first time, Tenra truly empathized with Ddraig. He spent a good while in his mindscape soothing her, even using the same tricks he used to calm down upset girls. It worked surprisingly well. Ddraig still grumbled, but at least she'd stopped howling.
Tenra let out a silent sigh. She really is a girl, huh…
"Tenra, you okay?"
"Ah—nothing, nothing at all."
Rias's voice snapped him out of his thoughts. She was watching him, curiosity flickering in her eyes.
News like "both Heavenly Dragons are female" was the kind of gossip that could set the world on fire. Best to keep that one to himself, Tenra decided.
"I've already set up the meeting. Let's go."
Rias's eyes lingered on him for a moment longer, but she let it go.
According to her, to get credit from the Underworld's academy, she needed to submit a research report on monsters or supernatural beings. With everything that had happened lately, she was running out of time. The only option was to ask someone who really knew their stuff—and as luck would have it, Kuoh Academy had just the person.
Their destination: the school's tennis courts.
Thwack, thwack…
The sound of rackets echoed across the court. Girls in short uniforms darted back and forth, sweat flying as they practiced their swings. Every leap sent their skirts fluttering, offering fleeting glimpses that would send any teenage boy's imagination into overdrive.
Suddenly, Tenra felt a sharp pinch at his waist. He sucked in a breath and turned to find Rias smiling sweetly at him.
"Enjoying the view, Tenra?"
"Rias, do you really think that little of me?"
He tried to sound wounded, but Rias just pouted, her cheeks tinged pink.
Who knew what's going on in that head of yours…
She let go, but not before giving his side a gentle rub. Tenra couldn't help but smile. For all her poise, the Gremory princess could be adorably jealous at times.
"It's Rias-sama and Tenra-sama!"
A shout went up, and the girls on the court finally noticed their audience.
Both Rias and Tenra were school icons. Rias was the undisputed queen of popularity, but among the girls, Tenra was the top heartthrob. Having both of them show up at the tennis club was enough to send the team into a frenzy. Practice was instantly forgotten as they crowded around, chattering excitedly.
Rias and Tenra slipped into their public-figure smiles, greeting everyone with practiced ease. Handling crowds like this was second nature by now.
"Good afternoon, Rias-san. I never thought I'd see you here. What a surprise."
The crowd parted, and a girl stepped forward. She was striking—chestnut curls, refined features, and a poise that screamed "old money." Even wiping sweat from her brow, she radiated elegance.
Tenra recognized her. If he remembered right, she was a third-year like him and Rias, and captain of the tennis club—Abe Kiyome.
"As I mentioned before, I have a favor to ask today, Kiyome-san."
Rias matched her smile for smile, all grace and confidence.
"I understand. Please, follow me."
Kiyome nodded, then turned to her teammates with a few quick words before leading Rias and Tenra to the club's activity room.
The "activity room" was more like a private lounge—plush furniture, tasteful decor, every bit as fancy as the Occult Research Club or the student council room.
"Make yourselves comfortable," Kiyome said, before disappearing into an adjoining bathroom.
Tenra and Rias settled onto the sofa. Two girls brought over steaming cups of tea—but "girls" was a loose term. One had wings for arms and taloned feet, the other was human from the waist up but all snake below.
Monster girls, no doubt about it. Tenra even spotted a snow-white gorilla with a ribbon peeking nervously from behind a wall.
"Miss Kiyome comes from a family famous for commanding monsters," Rias explained, sipping her tea. "She's an expert on all sorts of supernatural creatures, and she's contracted with more than a few herself. If anyone can help me finish my report, it's her."
Tenra nodded, content to play along as the silent observer.
At last, after a short wait, Kiyome emerged from the bathroom, freshly showered and ready to talk…
