Chapter 8: Assaulting the HYDRA Facility
[HYDRA Facility Perimeter, Morning – 2014]
The building was a nondescript skyscraper in Midtown, a stark contrast to the grimy streets of Hell's Kitchen. But Adam could feel the malevolent hum of its inner workings, a cold echo of the stolen tech they'd recovered. He used his plasma powers to send a silent surge through the fence, discreetly shorting out a series of motion sensors. He'd learned to be more subtle, a quiet hum instead of a blinding flash.
[OBJECTIVE: INFILTRATE FACILITY.]
"Defenses? I'll spark 'em out," Adam said, the mischievous grin back on his face. He watched as a guard patrolling the perimeter stumbled, tripping over a wire that was silently heated by Adam's plasma residue. The man yelped, a look of pure confusion on his face.
"Don't blow us up, Stiels," Anya's voice was a whisper from the shadows of an adjacent alleyway. She was already perched on a rooftop, her white lenses reflecting the morning light.
"Intruder alert! Perimeter breach!" the guard's radio crackled. He frantically scanned the empty perimeter.
A new voice, smooth and laconic, chimed in over Adam's comms. "Nice sparks, kid—just don't fry my tech. That stuff's still under warranty." It was Tony Stark, listening in.
"Your tech? I'm the star, Stark! Don't worry, I'll be gentle," Adam said, a playful smirk on his face.
"Ultron's here. I can feel the code, the life. Time to glow," Adam thought, his eyes fixed on the building. The stakes were higher than ever, but he was ready.
[Facility Interior, Afternoon – 2014]
The interior of the facility was pristine and futuristic, a gleaming testament to HYDRA's insidious reach. Adam and Anya moved through the silent hallways, their movements a seamless dance of power and grace. They came to a massive room filled with sleek, metallic drones.
[MASTERY OF PLASMA COMBAT TRAINING AT 30%. OBJECTIVE: SECURE PROTOTYPE.]
"Prototype? I'll glow it up," Adam said, a low hum of power in his voice. He sent a wave of plasma into the nearest drone, shorting out its circuits. The drone clattered to the floor, its lights going out.
"Careful, Stiels—this is big," Anya said, her webs wrapping around a half-dozen operatives who had burst into the room.
"You're done, kid!" one of the operatives yelled, his voice laced with rage.
"Done? I'm sparking! I'm just getting started!" Adam shot back, his plasma bolts flying with pinpoint accuracy, frying the drones one by one.
Tony's voice came over the comms again, a hint of genuine concern in his tone. "That's my code, kid—careful. A.I. is a slippery slope."
"Careful? I'm epic! I'm a hero in the making!" Adam boasted, though a small part of him felt the weight of Tony's warning. He zapped a drone's core, and its propellers started spinning wildly before it clattered to the floor like a broken toy.
"Ultron is starting. I have to stop it. I can't let him get out. Gotta destroy every piece of this," Adam thought, his face grim.
[Drone Battle, Evening – 2014]
The fight escalated, with more advanced drones joining the fray. They were faster, smarter, and deadlier. Adam was in his element, a whirlwind of glowing energy, his hands a blur as he shot off plasma bolts. Anya provided cover, her webs a defensive shield, and Matt, who had met them inside, took down operatives with ruthless efficiency.
"Ultron's my mess, kid," Tony said, his voice now a desperate plea over the comms.
"Mess? I'll glow it away! Don't you worry about a thing, Stark!" Adam said, a large plasma bolt arcing from his hand, frying an advanced drone's circuits.
"Nice shots, Stiels!" Anya yelled, but her voice was strained.
"HYDRA's using Stark's tech. It's a perfect storm," Matt said, his voice a low rumble.
"Tech? I'll fry it! All of it!" Adam replied, his focus absolute. He was a force of nature, a one-man wrecking crew.
"He's hopeless," Anya sighed, but her tone was fond.
"Ultron's dangerous. He's going to be a world-ending threat. But I'm more dangerous. I'm going to stop him," Adam vowed, a laser-guided plasma bolt making a drone's lights flash like a disco ball before it exploded in a shower of sparks.
[Hell's Kitchen Safehouse, Night – 2014]
Back at the safehouse, Adam, Anya, and Matt gave Tony the last of the Ultron prototype code they had secured. A message from the System appeared.
[SIMULATION COOLDOWN ENDED. READY?]
"New sim? I'm glowing for it!" Adam said, his eyes wide with anticipation. He was ready for the next challenge.
"You're too excited, Stiels. What even is a 'sim'?" Anya asked, her brow furrowed in confusion.
"Nice work, kid. You're a hero. Just... don't break my stuff," Tony's voice came over the comms, a hint of respect in his tone.
"Your stuff? I'm the hero, Stark. Don't forget it," Adam quipped, a triumphant grin on his face.
"Plan smart, Stiels. Always," Matt said, his advice a familiar refrain.
Adam's hands, still tingling with residual plasma energy, touched the comm, and a small, comedic jingle played, a perfect end to the mission.
"Ultron's growing. I have to keep growing too. It's time for a new sim. Time to get stronger," Adam thought, his heart pounding in his chest.
