Chapter 1 - The guard

*Riley's POV*

I walk out of class with Leah, heading to our lockers. It's Friday afternoon. The sun is shining brightly, and it's a glorious day. "Are you ready to go?" I ask as soon as we close our lockers. "Yes, I was thinking maybe we could move our homework date to the café around the corner?" "I thought we were going to your place" I say, confused. "I know, but my sister has friends over too, so I thought wouldn't it be more fun to go to the cafe." I consider my options for a moment. It's less safe than her place, but as long as I stay close, it won't hurt. "Okay then."

We pack up our books after finishing all the homework, and we order one last drink before packing our things. The sun is still shining brightly. "What are you doing this weekend?" I ask as we walk outside. "Oh, I'm not sure yet. I think I'll just chill out. Maybe Jess wanted to meet up, but we'll see. Oh, and my sister saw some shopping mall, so maybe we'll check it out. You?" she says as we turn the corner. "Oh, nothing special. Where are you meeting up with Jess? What are you doing? And where is that shopping mall?" "I'm not sure, but we'll see. Why? Do you want to meet up with Jess and me?" she asks back. "Oh no, I don't have time at all. I was just wondering." "Okay... You don't have to walk all the way to my house, by the way. It's way too far for you. I can find my way myself." "That's no problem, I need to get my steps in anyway," I say, while Leah looks ahead, slightly irritated. "Five months ago, you were never that interested in your 'steps'." I sigh but can't resist walking along with her.

Once I've dropped Leah off at home, I walk a little further down the street and sit on a bench. I want to be sure her sister is also home, so I wait until I see more movement in the house. Just then, I see Leah walk back outside, where a boy, who I don't know, is waiting. I see her make a quick chat and then invite him in. I feel a stomach ache rising, and I stay on the bench waiting until I see more movement...
