Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

After saying those words, Chen Jian reached out and grabbed at Liu Fusheng's collar!

He thought: This is the City Bureau. My uncle is the deputy section chief of the personnel department here. And Liu Fusheng? He's just a rookie cop who just joined. I have the upper hand. Of course I can rough him up however I want—push him around, curse at him, maybe even slap him.

If he'd picked someone else, maybe he could have scared them. Unfortunately for him, this time Chen Jian picked the wrong target…

Bang!

Before Chen Jian's hand even touched Liu Fusheng's collar, Liu's fist smashed right into Chen Jian's eye socket!

"You—damn it—how dare you hit me?!" Chen Jian's vision exploded with stars as he clutched his eye, growling low.

Liu Fusheng gave a cold sneer."This is the police bureau. I may not have been assigned a post yet, but I'm already on duty and wearing a police uniform. Your actions are an open assault on an officer—an attack on a law enforcement agency! Frankly, hitting you is me going easy."

The other new recruits around them fell silent. Someone even whispered to Liu, "Forget it. This guy's related to a leader. If you hit him, you're going to be in serious trouble…"

Hearing that, Chen Jian's confidence returned. He glared at Liu Fusheng through gritted teeth."You know who I am now, don't you? I'll tell you—get down on your knees and call me 'Grandpa' three times, or I'll have my Third Uncle ruin you!"

Kneel and call him Grandpa?

Liu Fusheng raised an eyebrow, his voice icy."Are you looking for death?"

As he spoke, he stepped toward Chen Jian. Idiots like this—what they need is a good beating!

Not to mention, Liu already knew Chen Jian's "powerful" third uncle was about to be dismissed from his position. Even if he weren't, Liu still wouldn't care.

Just as Liu was about to make his move, a loud voice rang out from the entrance:"Stop! Let me see who dares touch my nephew!"

Before the words even finished, a short, greasy-faced, heavyset middle-aged man stormed in, radiating arrogance.

Many in the conference room recognized him immediately—even though he wasn't wearing a uniform—this was Chen Qingbo, deputy section chief of the City Bureau's personnel department!

Chen had just arrived at the bureau, passing by the meeting room by coincidence. He hadn't had time to change into his uniform, but his air of authority was unmistakable.

"Third Uncle, this guy hit me!" Chen Jian perked up instantly at the sight of him, jabbing a finger at Liu Fusheng and making his complaint with venom.

Chen Qingbo's small eyes narrowed as he looked Liu Fusheng up and down."What's your name? You dare hit my nephew? You want to lose your job?"

Liu could tell who he was dealing with, but he wasn't about to say it out loud or confirm it—that would only complicate things.

Luckily, the man wasn't in uniform.

"So you're his accomplice? He assaulted an officer here in the bureau. I acted in self-defense according to the law. And I'm warning you—do not interfere with my official duties!" Liu's tone was firm, his face serious.

Chen Qingbo didn't yet realize his blunder. He let out a mocking laugh."What are you thinking? You're just a rookie cop, and you're warning me about interfering with law enforcement? Fine—go ahead, arrest me too! Let's see if you have the guts! I am—"

Smack!

A sharp slap cut him off.

Liu wasn't about to let Chen Qingbo announce his identity, so he raised his hand and cracked him across the face.

Chen Qingbo's eyes went wide in shock. Before he could react, Liu had already applied a textbook arrest maneuver, slamming him onto the table and pinning him so he couldn't move.

"I've already warned you. You insulted an officer in the line of duty. I'm now taking compulsory measures according to the law! Someone call the security division and have them arrest these two."

Everyone in the room was stunned.

You don't pass the civil service exam by being stupid—everyone knew exactly who Liu had just laid hands on. And no one dared move a muscle.

As Liu spoke, the meeting room was dead silent—except for Chen Qingbo's squeals, which sounded like a pig being butchered:"Agh! Damn it—gentler! I'm—agh!"

Liu applied a little more pressure, and Chen could barely even get a word out.

Chen Jian didn't dare get close either. He pointed from a safe distance and shouted,"Liu Fusheng, you're finished! My third uncle is the personnel chief! Help! Somebody help! A bureau leader is being attacked!"

The commotion drew a crowd of officers outside the meeting room.

Just as Chen Jian was yelling, the crowd parted and a man in his early fifties strode in, dressed in full police uniform."What's going on? Why all the noise?" he barked.

The surrounding officers instinctively stood at attention and saluted.

Even if the rookies didn't know him, one look at his shoulder insignia told them: this was a big deal—third-grade police supervisor, bureau-director level.

It was Wu Zhiming, Party Secretary of the Liaonan City Bureau, and its former director.

"Let him go," Wu said with a slight frown to Liu.

Liu saw the rank insignia, immediately released Chen Qingbo, and saluted."Sir, I am newly appointed Officer Liu Fusheng. These two assaulted an officer inside the bureau and openly insulted law enforcement. After warning them, I acted according to the law and restrained them."

As he spoke, Liu turned toward the security camera in the room."This entire incident was recorded, and the colleagues here can all testify."

Not a single loose end left.

Wu Zhiming gave Liu a long look, then glanced at Chen Qingbo—whose cheek was still burning red with a perfect handprint.

"Do you know who he is?" Wu asked.

Liu answered crisply, "No matter who he is—if he breaks the law, he should be punished. That's a police officer's duty."

Wu's stern face actually softened into a faint smile. He even nodded slightly.

Chen Qingbo had just caught his breath and was about to speak, but Wu raised a hand to silence him."Shut up. Haven't you embarrassed yourself enough?"

Then Wu turned back to Liu."I'll handle this. You all wait for your assignments."

With that, he waved a hand and led Chen Qingbo and Chen Jian out of the room.

The crowd outside dispersed, but inside the meeting room, the chatter only grew.

"Buddy, you've done it now!""The guy you just slapped? That's Section Chief Chen—the one in charge of assigning our posts!""Man, you're way too impulsive! Sure, we're cops, but there are ranks in the police too. Good luck to you…"

Several new recruits crowded around Liu, speaking over each other.

Liu just smiled faintly."Is it really that serious? I was just enforcing the law."

Enforcing the law?

A lot of them thought Liu was either insane or had been dropped on his head.

Someone probed, "Liu, is your backing stronger than Chief Chen's? Is that why you think you can get away with hitting him?"

Liu chuckled and shook his head. "What backing? I've got none."

"No backing? …Alright, good luck," the man said before walking off with a sigh.

The others now looked at Liu as if he were a fool. Everyone was sure he was doomed. Chen Qingbo was in charge of assignments—Liu was definitely getting sent to some remote suburb to walk a lonely beat.

But Liu remained perfectly calm.

He knew the truth: in his previous life, Chen Qingbo's dismissal wasn't due to any major work mistake—it was the result of political infighting.

And the man who'd taken him down? None other than Wu Zhiming, the City Bureau's Party Secretary who had just walked in.

Since Wu had shown up this time too, it was likely Chen Qingbo's downfall would come even earlier.

Sure enough—

Ten minutes later, a quiet piece of news spread through the meeting room:

Chen Qingbo, deputy section chief of the City Bureau's personnel department, had just been dismissed on the spot.

The entire room erupted. Every single person turned to look at Liu Fusheng—

Some like they'd just seen a ghost.Others as though they were looking at a god.
