Chapter 3 - Bridging the Gap

Written by **EYRAM**

One of her eyes turned bright yellow, and some strands in her hair with it. She looked at the doctor with pure anger in her eyes; she wanted only and thing but revenge. In a fraction of a second, she tore him limb from limb, felt no remorse as she mutilated him, and smashed his guts.

And when it was all over, she fled the scene, her clothes, hair, and even her skin all bloody. She then settled in the dorm, took a shower, then changed into her pajamas. Looking at herself in the mirror, she did not know how she would continue living.

Just then, two burly men clad in security uniforms demanded she get out of the dorm; they did not even allow her to pack her things, so she went out and left with nothing but her pajamas and sat on a park bench, not noticing when she fell asleep.

The next day, no one accepted her freelance advertisements, and she got fired from all her part-time jobs; moreover, the hospital gave her a notice to pay all due fees in a month or she would be sued.

She waltzed around the town seeking employment, but everywhere she went, she was asked, "Did you also sleep with your boss/teacher for this?" and that was how her impressive Curriculum Vitae and Certificates became something to garner her insult, even her perfect GPA was useless.

She was breaking on the inside; she felt she was a monster, and she killed a man. Despite everything he did, should she have taken the law into her hands? What if she got caught? What would she have done?

That afternoon, she had had it with the people in Den Ridge and decided to go past the town to the neighboring towns, but as soon as they started a background check, she was denied.

Her stomach ached as she had not eaten for the whole day, and she had not a penny to spare on food. She ended up going back to her dorm, only to see that witch who wrote the article, Britney Lane, sleeping in her bed! She used her downfall to become a famous reporter even before graduating.

She knew what she wanted to do and did it, without hesitation. She wanted to travel, but that was when she got a call from social services, telling her that her father was alive and lived in a town called Ravensville, located in North America.

With the loan she took from the bank to travel, she instead used it to get a plane ticket to North America, and after asking for directions, she finally found a bus that led to Ravensville.

She wore a brand-new hoodie, a pair of jeans, and a sky-blue shirt. On the bus, the ride was surprisingly smooth, not even a bump on the road.

But what got her truly mesmerized was the array of lights that painted the misty sky; it looked very beautiful, and while she was gawking over it, she arrived at the town, only leaving her even more flabbergasted.

The streets were flat and black, looking very sleek. It was nighttime, and the city was adorned in neon lights. She stood on the sidewalk thinking of how she would get to her dad, and that was when a taxi stopped in front of her.

"You're Jack's kid, right?" he asked,

"Yeah," she replied, not knowing how else she would get to her dad.

"Hop on in."

He invited her into his cab, and she settled into it, but there was this ominous feeling surrounding this seemingly sleepy, luminous town. She looked into the rear-view mirror and saw him staring.

That was when she began to feel extremely fearful. This was not the first time she had travelled, but she felt something sly on this particular trip.

Not long after, he stopped at a luxurious manor, painted in black and gold. Strangely, she felt this eerie sense of familiarity from it, almost like she had some sort of childhood trauma. As soon as she entered the house, the vague memories she had begun to add up, yet it seemed so different.

Then a man looking no more than 18 came out and said

"Gus, thanks for bringing her home again."

"It was no problem, this time she was even compliant," he said, and then drove away, leaving Serena even more confused.

The guy before her looked just like the old photos of her father, her mom's wedding pictures, but should he not have aged after sixteen years? Or could this be an illegitimate son? she thought.

"Seraphina, I already told you if you want to get out of the house, use the front door!" he said, his voice a bit high. She was at a loss for words to say, he was calling her by someone else's name, and she had never been in the house. What was he even talking about?

"I think this is the wrong address, sorry, I was looking for someone else," She replied nervously and tried to slowly inch away from his sight. He smirked and said

"Playing dumb, huh? Well, that's a new one. Do you even think what you're doing will work?"

"But I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Where did you get these cheap clothes? I cut off your credit card, but I know you would never buy second-hand clothes."

Amidst all this chaos, she heard footsteps that sounded programmed, almost monotone. And almost instinctively, she ran away. She was already at a disadvantage, and if another man from the house joined him, she might not be able to leave.

Contrary to her expectations a girl came out of the house, she looked like a mirror image of herself, the girl had a full head of strawberry blonde locks that extended to her waist, warm blue eyes and rosy skin, they looked the same age and had the same weight, but her clothes were much fancier than anything Serena ever remembered wearing or could afford for that matter.
