Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: New Companion

I don't think my acting is working, especially after the people who were already in the room explained the situation to the shiny golden-armored guards.

Apparently, these people are from the Holy Inquisition, also known as the Balance Keepers. And I don't like the look they're giving me. Hey, that was all in self-defense! What I did was clean out the trash quite literally. Don't you smell the lingering stench?

Will these balance-crazy bastards hold a public baby burning, calling me some demon child? You all were assigned to my protection! Apparently, all three great families sent guards to protect me, as I am pivotal to the empire's prosperity.

My existence has thrown a wrench in the plans of several powerful figures in this world. Apparently, some of the other empires were pushing for a political marriage with the crown princess, as none of the other great families had a suitable candidate. This would mean two things: the Avaloria Empire would be without a military leader and an empress, practically crippling them. In this case, a council of elders would be created to govern after the current emperor and my father are no longer in the picture. Also, if the princess was married to another empire, the offspring would be lenient toward the empire their father hails from. The Gold family wouldn't bother they're obsessed with balance and righteousness.

As things stand, the most likely culprits for the attempt on my life are those old nobles who would have made up the council of elders, or the leaders of some of the other empires. Some of the other empires also have humans who have been contracted to angels. Those clueless angels apparently play all sides.

Another fact is that in this world, each race has something special that helps them survive. For example, the dwarves are masters of making weapons and artifacts. The elves have mastery over spirits and magic. We humans can apparently make contracts with two of the apex beings of this world: dragons and angels. That's why the other empires like to keep human churches to gain access to angels, but the majority are in Avaloria. This is likely how these assassins gained access to an angel artifact.

Soon my desperate attempts to seem like a normal baby were interrupted when my mother barged in. She instantly picked me up and began squeezing me. Mother, I can't breathe! Stop you may end up killing me!

The matter of the golden-armored individuals was finally clarified. Thankfully, they won't hold a burning. Rather, they were ashamed and sorry, as angel artifacts fall under their jurisdiction and a specialist should have been present.

Another person who seems to have taken this attack to heart is Patricia, the head maid. She was constantly apologizing to my mother, saying she had failed her, that her kindness was wasted on her, and how saving her was a waste.

My mother patted her head and tried to calm her. Apparently, my mother took her in when she had no one and raised Patricia in the palace. Hence, her loyalty to my mother is immense.

My mother unceremoniously took me to her room, saying her baby would only be safe with her, and from now on I must sleep next to her.

That sounds like a nightmare. Noooo...

My mother is a normal person according to the info gathered by Test. How am I more safe in her room? I have a feeling she will squish me to death.

...

Soon the news of me killing twenty assassins from my crib spread throughout the empire, and also to the neighboring empires. Everyone is calling me the Black Lion Cub. Me casting fusion magic and tier-three magic from my crib has some of the old wizards foaming at the mouth. This kind of magical skill would be considered abnormal for the elves, let alone for a human.

A lot of the info was suppressed, such as me casting tier-seven magic. Maybe some wizards who spend their lives trying to achieve this would jump off their towers.

The info of how I cast all these spells is also abnormal, as I gathered the mana directly from the air. Unlike normal wizards who meditate to gather mana in their body, infuse their will and essence into it, then use it to cast magic an alternative is to use mana potions, but overuse can cause mana poisoning.

What I did is groundbreaking because I could command the mana in the air. Test's original assessment of me stated that I was "loved by mana," hence I don't need to infuse will and essence into anything or accumulate it. This is a broken skill as I basically have infinite mana at my command. Another benefit is I don't have to chant or make magic circles mana bends to my will naturally.

And now I can use magic freely. The official story to the people close to me is that since I'm loved by mana, the attack triggered something and I'm using magic subconsciously, as those who are loved by mana are naturally attuned to magic.

Dealing with me has become a hassle as my chubby self no longer stays put in my crib and often floats around and goes exploring.

...

After my dad returned, he was furious. From now on, two dragon knights will accompany me, and their contracted dragons will reside in the mountains near our palace, making their nests there so they can come to assist at a moment's notice.

I now stay in my parents' room and overheard an interesting conversation.

My father, Lykos Black, said, "We can give him the egg earlier than expected, as he is already able to use mana."

My mother chimed in, "Yes, the earlier the contract is made, the better."

My ears twitch as I overhear this conversation. My chubby hands begin to rub together. Apparently, I'll get a dragon egg neat! Do I get to name it?

...

It's the year 2005 of the Avalorian Imperial Calendar, and I am five years old. I have lost a lot of my baby fat, but the sad thing is my cheeks are still puffy. This needs to change fast.

At the moment, I am fixing my clothes as I am about to meet someone very special. I'm dressed in an elegant deep blue suit that's more like a trench coat, which pairs perfectly with my jet-black eyes and hair.

I see my ever-present shadow maid, Patricia, in the corner of the mirror. After the incident, she has warmed up to me. We are currently in my room a new one assigned to be closer to my parents' room. The thing about me having to stay in their room was short-lived because my father couldn't perform certain nightly activities if I was present. Thank God that would have scarred me for life.

As I was saying, today is a special day. I'm about to meet Platyrian, my father's contracted dragon. Platyrian is a dragon king. Today I will contract his soon-to-be-born son, who is also a blue platinum dragon.

I nod toward Bob and George, the two dragon knights assigned as my personal guards and in charge of my safety.

My parents are waiting for me downstairs in a carriage. We will visit the dragon nest.
