Chapter 23 - The Sil.

Buagh, I was spitting blood. With my saber almost split in two, all I could do was grab what was left and hold one of the daggers in my other hand. I was kneeling, Nixen standing near me.

Against the Sil, we would both have to give it our all.

The only thing I hope is that this Sil can't use all his powers.

I was trying to plan how to attack, but there wouldn't be time for that. The Sil was already running straight toward me, its red eyes blinded by the instinct to kill.

The Sil was very fast, I didn't feel it was fair. With that big body, how can it be so fast? I was already trying to move from where I was, moving to my right, but the Sil, with its strong, goat-like legs, was almost on top of me. Without even having to make an effort, it followed me as if it were playing. Nixen, taking advantage of the moment, managed to scratch one of its legs quite deeply, making a cut where the flesh could be seen hanging off. The Sil growled and shrieked in reaction to Nixen, trying to hit her, only to fail in the process. I was already taking position again. When suddenly, the Sil pulled some kind of bat from its back. It looked like wood, but at the same time, it looked like some kind of metal. All I thought was that wherever it could reach me with that bat, it would kill me with one hit.

Nixen was facing the Sil, while I was behind it, but the Sil was still holding its position, trying to keep an eye on me with its right eye. I had already started running, looking for opportunities. When Nixen attacked, I would try to make synchronized attacks. While she distracted me, I would attack, and she would do the same. We had already applied and rehearsed this type of strategy, but never with something so large, much less armed.

We were jumping and running around, trying to cause as much damage as possible. But my dagger and the broken piece of saber I was using weren't enough to significantly injure him. The only thing I could do to try to injure him further was to cut him in the same places Nixen had or that I'd been stockpiling. Nixen was absurdly fast; while I could land one hit, she could land two or sometimes even three.

The Sil grew increasingly furious, his swings becoming more erratic. Each swing cut through the wind and left a bone-chilling buzzing sound. Every time one of those blows passed near me, the wind alone was enough to cut my skin.

We continued to rack up cuts, and it was already clear that Sil was having a bit more trouble moving. He wasn't as fast as before, and his blows, although almost as strong, were clearly trying not to use his legs as much. We'd already been sparring for over half an hour, which was an eternity considering the speed at which we were fighting. I was already feeling much calmer. We just had to keep attacking and building up like this, and we'd finally be able to take down one of the leaders.

Suddenly, I felt a stabbing pain in one of my legs. When I looked down to see what it was, I felt my blood boiling. I had a dagger stuck in my right calf. Thankfully, it wasn't very big, but it was still preventing me from running. I tried to pull it out, but the Sil was already on top of me. A second of distraction could have cost me my life. I dodged to the side, putting less weight on my injured leg, but the bat grazed my shoulder. Just a small touch felt like a train had hit me; my body was thrown. I was trying to stay alert, but my consciousness was coming and going. I landed almost 4 meters from where we were fighting, and luckily, there were no fights near ours. I was trying to adjust myself only to feel that my arm wasn't in the right place. The blow had dislocated my shoulder, and adding the dagger in my calf, I'd be out of the fight for a while. I quickly began to assess my injuries and see what I could do. Gritting my teeth to keep from screaming, I braced my shoulder, which was completely slumped, my consciousness beginning to waver again. I kept telling myself that I had to hold on and be alert for whatever was coming if I fainted here. My life wouldn't be the only thing in danger. The pain was finally subsiding, and I'd already been directing my mana threads to heal my wounds a bit; I didn't have much time. From where I was, I could see that Nixen was also tiring, and on several occasions, the Sil had come close to hitting her.

Now with three daggers and half my saber, I was trying to find an opportunity to attack by throwing one of the daggers. I wanted to attack one of the eyes, but the Sil was moving too much.

Taking advantage of the distance between us, I took the opportunity to use magic a little more comfortably, trying to immobilize the Sil's legs. I began to devise spells and quickly made the ground around the Sil become a little more liquid and also tried to tie its legs with 'Lignum Nauita'. Just as I was finishing casting the spell, I threw one of my daggers aiming at its heart, a second later I threw another, aiming at its left eye. I had started to run trying to shorten the distance as much as I could while the Sil was tied up and trying to dodge the attacks. Nixen hadn't stayed still either, she was also in the middle of a jump trying to attack Sil's neck. On the other hand, I was almost at my last mana reserves; the spells plus the continuous reinforcement throughout my body had already left me without energy.

The Sil, knowing that he had to choose between all the attacks, chose to block the dagger that was going towards his abdomen and try to hit Nixen. The second dagger had hit its target, but the wound it left wasn't as serious, only leaving a scratch that wasn't very deep, barely managing to obstruct his vision a little. Meanwhile, Nixen, who was in the air, tried to redirect the blow that was coming towards her by putting her legs against the bat, which made her jump very far, almost 10 meters from where we were.

For now it would just be Sil and me.

All around the field, blood was visible. The battle against the wave was at its peak. All you could see and hear were screams and cries. Grandma Thea was standing next to me, trying to help the wounded who were returning as quickly as they could. I was staring at Sam from where I was, clenching my fists so hard I think they had started to bleed. Emma was next to me, squeezing my arm almost as if she wanted to take it away. I understood her perfectly and all I could think about was our son, how strong and fast he had grown. Seeing him face off against a beast as strong as a Sil was incredible. Although I knew this Sil wasn't a mature one who could use magic perfectly, he was still a very strong adversary.

Emma and I had been wondering why this wave felt so different; it was strange and hard to describe, but Thea agreed with us. It seemed as if something had prompted it.

The Sil and I were staring at each other, looking for any opening to attack. The first to attempt the attack was the Sil, who took a swing at my head, which I dodged and attacked his arm. I was trying to maintain my position, but the wind from the swing alone was enough to move me. I had to do everything possible to keep my center of gravity low and not move like a comet carried away by the wind. The attacks came and went, I was already tired, my vision was blurring, and all I could pray for was a miracle. I kept trying to lower my center of gravity to improve my reaction and the wind resistance the bat achieved. I was thinking about trying an attack that would be very dangerous; I would go for the arm that was carrying the bat, but to achieve that, I would have to let the bat pass close to my head. Now I was just waiting for the opportunity.

Everything was happening so fast, in a second I saw my opportunity, I dodged the bat by just a few centimeters, just the air around me made my face deform, it felt like I was near an airplane turbine. With the same force that the bat was coming at me, I tried to imbue all the mana I could into what was left of my saber and cut against the movement, I began to feel how it cut the Sil's flesh, almost cutting to the bone. What made him drop the bat, I felt a shadow looming over me. I looked up and saw that the Sil had thrown a punch taking advantage of the short distance I was at. The punch was almost in my face and I had no other movement or opportunity to dodge, I could only block, but even so I felt it would be totally useless, so I tried to deflect the blow with everything I had, surprisingly I felt someone pulling me from behind, while I tried to deflect the blow. When the punch connected, I shot forward like a broken kite, right behind me was Nixen. I didn't know how she got there; I was sure she was in the other direction of the field.

"kyaaaaaa".

A loud cry echoed across the field. All the beasts halted their movements and began to return to the forest. It seemed their leader had called them, and this whole battle would finally end.

"What's wrong with you? How come you can't even avenge your son? The one who killed him is right in front of you, and yet you don't even dare to move. You just have to grit your teeth and watch from afar."

"How little of a man you are"
