Chapter 9 - Chapter 8

Seconds turn into minutes, minutes turn into hours, hours turn into days…

A month later…

As I'm lying on the couch, Mariana's voice continues to echo in my mind. Some days it pierces through my soul, other days, it's a faint noise. It feels like I've been crying for an eternity. The pain doesn't leave, it just stays there, forming a deep hollow in my soul. The sun starts to shine in the midst of the clouds, sending bright rays into the living room. "You are the light of my life that vanquishes the dark clouds," Noah said, the day he proposed, before I refused

said no to marrying him.

Suddenly, my phone rings, and I hear the unexpected:

"Hello, is this Adalyn Rochelle Willow?"

"Yes, this is she,"

There's a sudden silence on the phone, and I hear some papers shuffling in the background.

"I'm sorry, but who are you?" I ask.

"Noah's mom, dear, I'm calling to tell you something that has to do with him..."

Astria Stone, I remember her when Noah introduced me to her. She has dark brown long curls, with side-swept bangs and sparkling light grey eyes. She always had such a jovial personality, but hearing her like this tore me apart.

"What happened to him?" I ask as fear settles in my thoughts.

"Honey, he's not in a good state," she says, "He's all over the place, hanging out at clubs, getting hungover, and the girls he's been bringing home…Oh my, it's just terrible to see him suffering like this."

Something tugs at my heartstrings, a mixture of emotions overcomes my thoughts while fury and sadness combine in my soul.

"Mrs. Stone, is Noah currently with someone?" I ask, my voice cracking at the end.

"Kind of, but it's complicated. Her name is Zara Monroe, but their relationship isn't official yet, they're on and off, one week they're together, the next week, they're separated. I was wondering if you could talk to him, and…"

"My apologies, Mrs. Stone, but I'm not going to interfere with the choices Noah makes regarding who he wants to be with," I say, my tone sharp and resolute.

And that's the end of our call.
