Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Confrontation

Brian wasn't one for drama. He preferred clarity, directness, and loyalty. So when he saw Paul at the local gym, he didn't hesitate.

Paul was lifting weights, headphones in, sweat dripping.

Brian walked over, stood in front of him.

Paul looked up, startled.

Brian didn't smile.

"We need to talk."

Paul removed his headphones. "About?"

"Joey."

Paul's jaw tightened. "She told you?"

"She didn't have to. I saw it in her eyes."

Paul sat up, grabbed a towel. "I didn't mean to hurt her."

"But you did."

Paul nodded. "I know."

Brian crossed his arms. "Why are you back?"

Paul looked away. "Because I have nowhere else to go."

"That's not good enough."

Paul stood. "I loved her."

"Then why did you leave?"

Paul's voice cracked. "Because I thought I was giving her a better future. I thought I was building something. But I was wrong."

Brian studied him. "You still love her?"

Paul didn't answer.

Brian stepped closer. "Then fight. But don't manipulate. Don't guilt her. Don't play the victim."

Paul nodded slowly. "I won't."

Brian turned to leave, then paused. "Zed's not perfect. But he's present. That counts."

Paul watched him go, heart heavy.

He knew the battle wasn't with Zed.

It was with time. And regret.
