A Shinigami's body is composed of Reishi (Spirit Particles). After death, the body will eventually break down and return to the earth of Soul Society. However, spirit particles of the 3rd Class Spirit Power and above are too dense to return. The ceremony to help them return is the Konsō Reisai (Soul Funeral Festival). This is something taught to ordinary Shinigami at the academy.
However, in reality, according to the "superstitions" passed down among the nobles, spirit particles of the 3rd Class and above can never return to the earth of Soul Society. To prevent these overly powerful spirit particles from lingering, the Konsō Reisai actually has another purpose: to send the deceased powerhouse to Hell during the ceremony.
Ordinary Shinigami squad members are generally around the 20th Class Spirit Power, vice-captains are 4th to 5th Class, and captains are 3rd Class and above. Therefore, the Konsō Reisai is only performed for a captain who has died in battle, every twelve years after their funeral is completed.
