Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The beginning of the end II draft

Boom

Dust rose in the air from the impact, debris of sand and concrete flying around.

"Cough, cough—Mei, you okay?"

"Mmm, I'm fine, thank you."

Yunxia waved her hand, dispersing the sand and dust from the air.

You're probably wondering how they survived the fall from the 43rd floor of a 56-story hotel, right? Well…

Sysi: It was quite simple. Yunxia activated the master's weapon and imagined it as a curved wall which collected the impact of the fall. Thinks Although normally that wouldn't have worked, the master's weapon is in slime form, which has the best defense, as liquid-like substances absorb the force of any attack or hit and spread it evenly around their surface area. Unless you can hit all the areas at once, it's practically impenetrable.

Narrator: But what if the opponent hits one point over and over again? Wouldn't that break the defenses?

Sysi: Lemme see… Thinks Nah, I don't think so. After all, it's not just any liquid—it's a slime, and it has a consciousness.

Yunxia helped Mei to stand, her hands vibrating from the fear of the fall. She clearly didn't think this through and was pretty scared herself.

"Hey Mei, you can stop examining it. I'll tell you about it later—we have a bigger problem to worry about."

"It's just as we thought, Miss—they are one of us… one of them is, I think."

"Sigh, what to do, what to do," the delivery guy murmured while taking a step forward through the dust.

"Nothing. We are not going to do anything. Besides, I have gotten what I wanted," the dark feminine voice spoke while holding a bunch of papers.

"My designs!!" Mei shouted. "Give them back right now!!"

Yunxia held Mei back from pouncing on them.

"What do you guys wan—"

Staring at the quests, it finally made sense. She wasn't just given a random system to supervise her—it was to help her level up and adjust to the different worlds she would find herself in.

"Sigh, I need to select a level, right?"

"Yes, Master."

"Yo, Yunxia!" Mei called out, snapping Yunxia out of her thoughts.

"Y-yes, what's the matter?! Oh, it's true… those guys." She looked at the three figures discussing amongst themselves. She let go of Mei and stepped up. By this time, the dust had settled, and they were clearly visible.

"Hey, you guys didn't answer me. I'm asking you a question—what do you guys want?!"

They all turned to look at her, faces serious.

"What we want?" they all chorused.

The delivery guy spoke with lazy confidence.

"It's simple, really. After all, you must have seen the system message, right? We have to kill each other. It's simply a dog-eat-dog world. Become my XP."

He lunged forward while yawning but was held back by the crimson-eyed guy from before.

"Hold it. Were you even listening to what we discussed? The lady has already confirmed it—we can't build those stuff. Not on our own."

"True, she did say that."

"Thank God you understand. So, I'll suggest we use their expertise. After all, if they had the designs and bought so much supplies, they clearly have a high surviving chance."

Looking at his supposed audience and partner, all he could see was absolute confusion.

"I meant that they look prepared and have gathered enough resources. We could use it to our advantage." Turning to meet the real Yunxia, who was still contemplating, he asked, "Right, my lady?"

"Mmn, you do speak some truth, but I doubt they'd be willing—especially because of your first impression."

The delivery guy cracked his knuckles.

"I say we just kill them and loot their resources and XP."

He swatted the hand of the crimson-eyed figure away, already taking a step forward.

"Sigh, you're such a pain, Finn. Like, why don't you listen? We're going with what Lady Yunxia says."

"Ok, ok, Dorian, you're so obedient it's annoying. Besides, she looked indecisive for a moment."

"You both shush, lemme think so I can play my cards right."

"Hey, you three, I have a proposition," Yunxia called out, demanding their attention while stepping forward.

"I noticed you guys murmuring amongst yourselves, and I'm guessing you got the same system message as me. So I'll be straight with you guys—I wanna build an alliance with the three of you."

Narrator: Woah, I guess she chose the hard level, huh?

Sysi: Yup, she got guts. After all, there's a reason that level was put as hard.

Narrator: Oh really? Care to explain?

Sysi: It's simply because it's hard to accomplish—especially at her level.

Narrator: Huh, that's a vague explanation.

Sysi: I guess I have to break it down for all the simpletons to understand. To build an alliance is a pathway to a new plot; every quest unlocks a different plot route. Also, it's hard because even though she completes the quest, she could still fail it under certain conditions. And it's because human emotions are hard to understand, let alone control. So, to understand that, we use favourability—and that's when it comes into play. Though I doubt she picked it 'cause of logic. Nope, she probably picked it because it seemed doable.

Narrator: Hmm, I think I understand now. So even if she built the alliance, if she were to get betrayed, she'd fail the quest nonetheless. That's a bit cruel, don't you think?

Sysi: Huh, really? Well, I didn't create the quest, so blame Sekai's owner, not me.

Narrator: I'll keep that in mind. Anyways, let's not take too much screen time…

…Glitches…
