Kross' instincts tightened. Something was wrong. The bond they shared had sent him strong emotions earlier, panic and sadness, and now the emptiness of the carriage made that feeling worse, heavier.
He stayed still for a moment, letting his eyes sweep every corner, trying to make sense of it. Nothing.
The carriage was empty. And he knew, without a doubt, that Lyra might be in trouble.
Kross realized something immediately. Wherever Lyra was, that was where all those strong emotions had come from. The panic, the sadness—they weren't random. They were tied to her, and now she wasn't here.
He turned and looked around the area, scanning quickly. There was no one nearby. No sign of Lyra, no one who could tell him where she had gone. The bond between them was sending a warning, but it wasn't enough on its own.
Kross closed his eyes for a moment and tried to reach through the mind link to Ryan, hoping the connection would tell him where she was or if Ryan was with her.
Nothing.
