Penny's POV
It feels as if the air's been knocked out of me as I stare at the empty coffee table.
"It was right there," I whisper, pointing at the empty table as if it might suddenly produce the locket again.
Andrew crouches beside the couch, searching between the cushions. "It didn't sprout legs, Penny. It has to be here."
But it isn't. My fingers dig into my palms as dread slams through me.
"That's not funny," I snap, my voice shaking. "We both saw it."
Andrew lifts his head, meeting my eyes. His expression is serious. "I know. I saw it too."
The apartment feels too strange and loud with silence. My parents had just left for Willow Street with Nick. They weren't even gone fifteen minutes.
I rush toward the door. "They must've taken it by accident. Maybe Dad picked it up when he was grabbing his jacket."
Andrew is already pulling out his phone. "Let's call them."
I pace around while he dials. My arms wrapped around me so tight, holding myself together the best way I can.
