"What do you mean?"
Myles slowly turned it around in his hands, examining every part of it, his eyes still slightly wider than usual.
Blake watched him for a moment before explaining.
"It's just as it sounds, really. There's my blood cells inside and... well, they don't just disappear once they're outside my body."
He pointed at the small object sitting in Myles' hands.
"Basically, I put a tiny drop of my blood into it while I was making it. The cells became suspended inside the material, and because the thing is designed to preserve biological samples, they're still active to carry certain traces of the signals my body produces."
Myles continued staring at it.
"So I can hear your heartbeat through it."
"Yeah! Even when we're far away, or just when you're a little restless, like that time, when you checked my pulse."
Myles brushed his thumb slowly over its surface.
"I just needed a drop of blood out. Nothing much."
Myles' gaze shifted to Blake's finger.
