Chapter 11 - Jealousy

Li Tian awoke with the dawn, the faint light filtering through the paper window casting gentle patterns on the floor. Outside, the Eastern Cloud Sect stirred to life—birds chirping, water flowing in the small canal nearby, and the occasional rustle of leaves as early risers began their morning routines. But Li Tian? He yawned, stretched lazily, and rolled over, eyes half-closed, savoring the last moments of his precious rest.

"Another day of 'training,'" he muttered, dragging himself up. Training, of course, was a generous term for what he actually did. More often than not, it involved sitting still for hours, breathing slowly, and occasionally watching the clouds roll by. Yet, inexplicably, the cultivation results kept coming.

Today, as usual, his master's voice echoed faintly in his mind, a voice both patient and exasperated. "Li Tian, the path of cultivation demands discipline and effort. There is no shortcut."

Li Tian smirked inwardly. "Yeah, yeah, I get it. But maybe the shortcut is just… doing nothing."

The system, ever so subtle, chimed softly in his mind, a reminder of the strange companion only he could hear. "Host, your progress remains optimal. Natural state aligns with the Slacker Path. Do not deviate."

"Slacker Path, huh? Sounds about right," Li Tian said aloud, rubbing his eyes as he stood.

Outside, Mei Lin was already up, tending to the small garden near their quarters. She had always been an early riser, her gentle hands coaxing life from the soil with patient care. Her presence was a comforting constant in Li Tian's otherwise chaotic and sleepy world.

"Morning, Mei Lin," he called casually as he stretched.

She looked up, a bright smile lighting her face. "Morning, Li Tian. Did you sleep well?"

"Like a rock. Or maybe a lazy cat," he joked, plopping down on a nearby stone bench.

Mei Lin laughed softly. "You really do have a talent for doing nothing."

"That's because I'm the best at it," he replied with mock pride. "But hey, sometimes doing nothing is the best way to get something done."

She shook her head, amused but fond. "Maybe so. But don't get too comfortable. Master Zhao's been asking about your training progress."

Li Tian sighed, "Yeah, I know. He worries too much."

Mei Lin studied him for a moment, her eyes warm but serious. "You know, Li Tian, I admire your calmness. You never seem to stress about anything. Sometimes I wonder if you even care about all this cultivation business."

He shrugged, "I care about the results. Just not the drama."

"Still…" she trailed off. "I wish you'd try a little harder sometimes."

Li Tian smiled faintly. "I try in my own way. The system seems to think it's working."

Mei Lin nodded slowly, though a flicker of concern shadowed her expression. There was something about Li Tian that made her feel safe, yet she sensed his limits.

As they spoke, a commotion erupted near the main courtyard. A tall, confident figure approached—the newcomer who had been causing whispers throughout the sect: Zhou Kai.

Zhou Kai's presence was magnetic—his aura commanding attention without effort. His eyes held a sharp intelligence, and his movements exuded controlled power. Unlike Li Tian's lazy ease, Zhou Kai's energy was intense and focused.

Mei Lin's gaze sharpened. "That's Zhou Kai. They say he's looking for a dao partner."

Li Tian glanced over, eyebrows raised. "Dao partner?"

Mei Lin nodded. "A dao partner is someone you share a deep cultivation bond with. Like a couple in cultivation, helping each other grow stronger together."

"Sounds serious."

"Very. And Zhou Kai is serious. I heard he's already at the third tier of the Nascent Soul stage. That's impressive for someone so young."

Li Tian whistled softly. "No wonder everyone's talking about him."

Zhou Kai approached the group, nodding respectfully to Master Zhao and the other elders before his eyes settled on Mei Lin. His smile was genuine but contained a hint of challenge.

"Mei Lin, I've heard much about your talents. I hope we can train together," he said.

Mei Lin returned the smile, though a subtle blush colored her cheeks. "I look forward to it."

Li Tian watched quietly, sensing a shift. The easy friendship he shared with Mei Lin suddenly seemed more fragile, more… complicated.

After Zhou Kai walked away, Mei Lin turned to Li Tian. "He's… different."

Li Tian nodded slowly. "Yeah, I can see that."

For the first time, a pang of jealousy flickered in his chest—a feeling he quickly pushed away. Mei Lin was his childhood friend, his anchor. But perhaps she needed more than what he could offer.

Later that day, during training, Li Tian's system pinged an update: "Potential dao partner bond detected between Mei Lin and Zhou Kai. Monitoring emotional parameters."

Li Tian snorted. "Great. Just what I needed. A romantic subplot."

He shook his head, focusing on his breathing, trying to ignore the swirling emotions.

But deep down, he knew something was changing. The slow, steady rhythm of his life was about to get a little more complicated.

And maybe, just maybe, that was a good thing.
