Chapter 5 - A Sweet Thought That Was

Soon, Ira awoken, her body aching all over, the young woman was covered in filth from head-to-toe.

When she tried to stand up, her legs had given out from under themselves, her throat felt so incredibly dry, too. When she had started coughing, blood came out, she needed to drink something, anything, as long as it replenished her dehydrated body.

Ira could only crawl around, she could not stand up, so that was the only available option for her.

A few things started to settle into her mind now that she was in a relatively safe spot, the first being that she had actually killed a person, her mind vividly remembered how his toned and tough flesh was hard to rip away at first, but less than a few moments later it had been ripped from its intended place, the image and sounds he had made sent a shiver down her spine. She wondered if he had a family waiting for him, maybe even a wife and children, had she ripped him away from them? Would his children have to grow up without a father around to teach them things that his wife wouldn't know how to?

The thoughts of what she had done sickened her to the bone. The young woman wondered why she had not thought of this earlier, while she was ripping and clawing at the Slender Knight's throat, had she become inconsiderate to another person's life while trying to save hers? Ira had most likely also doomed that young man and woman to death by running away.

'B-but I would've died too..'

But she did not know that, maybe if they had fought together they would have lived, even if the situation had been astronomically close to impossible to survive from.

'Th-they're just illusions..! They're not real, I shouldn't be thinking of them as if they were alive, and why should I care! All humanity has shown me is that it was sick! That Knight was trying to kill me, and that girl and boy would've just watched as that large man killed me! I didn't see that girl screaming for me, so why should I scream for her survival!? Ugh.. I am just going to stop thinking about it…'

She was right, The Slender Knight was aiming to kill her, not out of just being required by duty, but also because he had wanted to, the expression he had while attempting to strike her down showed how sick he was, he was doing it because the idea of slaughtering the defenseless got a rouse out of him.

While the young man and woman had just watched as the man screamed about ending her life, he most definitely would have done it if it wasn't for the arrow that had cut his malicious idea short.

After Ira had rested for multiple hours, she finally had enough energy to stand and even walk! But she had to be careful, she would not live another encounter with The Knights in black, or The Men On Horses.

It seems the young woman would become a Scavenger Of The Night. The safest time to scavenge was at the dead of night, but if caught, it would become the most dangerous, because unlike Ira, The Knights In Black had a way to see in the dark, just by judging by their incredible accuracy when there was no light around.

She decided to rest for a few more hours, that would be best, she was just barely able to walk, which made her feel uncomfortable about the idea of not being able to run away from danger.

Her mind wandered to what her life would be like as an awakened, it would undoubtedly be much better. The highest paying job in the city was to join the AAD's emergency response force, which was always in need of more members, but maybe she wanted a more peaceful life, such as working in a store, living in a 1 bedroom apartment, maybe even adopting a pet.

Such sweet thoughts these were, she would no longer have to struggle to find food, or a place to sleep away from the cold streets.

She longed for these things, Ira's life had never been as happy as others around her, she had never felt worthy of such joys in life, but maybe that would change with her awakening, and even possibly her death. She did not see any reasonable possibility of her living from this trial, all she wished was that when she failed, she would be put down quickly, the young woman did not want to cause suffering to those around her, she did not want them to experience what the world has shown her, that it was cruel and unfair to those who needed equality the most.

As the tears began to fall from her scarlet red eyes, she couldn't help but smile in this desperate situation, she had never felt more happy, who would not? Either she would die, and no longer have to worry about struggle, or she would live, and experience the joys of the world that had been kept away from her.

So, she would live, she was determined to live, but she was also at peace with the possibility of death, worrying would only cause her stress.

Ira sat up with a pained groan, her face lit up with a smile, a smile that she had longed to experience again for years.

"I wonder, my birthday is coming up in a few weeks, maybe I should do something nice for myself when the time comes, after all, I'll be turning twenty-one!"

With a loud yawn, she leaves the building, the sun high above her head.

'What. Was it not just night!? How long did I sleep for!? It must've been awhile.. at least I am not starving to death. I should probably wait until the sun sets, I don't want to be surrounded and diced up into chunks, haha!'

The situation was severe, yet her face was still as bright as the sun above her head, but it would not be like that in a few days..
