Chapter 4 - A day of work

Ten years have passed since I began working under lord Potterburn, and quite frankly he sucks as a boss, he barely provides enough food to survive and has worked two addition servants to death since I have been here, He does not give us any breaks and he only lets us sleep for four hours a night.

Aside from lord potterburn being a terrible lord and trying to indirectly kill us off so he doesn't need to pay out our contracts when they end. I have had other issues arise. One of those being that I have started to regain memories from my past life. I don't remember a lot in full detail but I know I used to live in a technologically advanced civilization. Before I could recall any of this. That type of world would seem impossible to accomplish. I still don't know how I came to be reincarnated or how I died, but I do understand a lot more now and possibly can use that to my advantage.

Another thing I discovered while working is that in this world magic does exist, and in fact about five percent of people are capable of it, and among that five percent only about two percent can use unique magic, and as amazing as that sounds unique magic is just magic that deviates from body enhancement or debuff type magic. So even if you can use magic chances are the best you can do is increase your physical abilities which is kinda of lame. Unique magic isn't necessarily unique per person, there are generally a limited amount of unique magics and if I remember correctly there are about forty-two recorded unique magics. While they typically will be reacting magic types there are rare accounts of someone appearing able to use magic never seen before but the only happens every five hundred years or so. Personally I wish I could see if I have magic potential but I don't nearly have enough time to test it out let alone use any of it. The only reason I know anything is because I overhear discussion between the other servants and the family of the lord.

These last ten years have been rough but some good has already come from it. Another boy one year older than me was taken into servitude around the same time I was, and we hit it off pretty quickly. Granted we only really could work together as we weren't allowed to slack off. His name is Jackel and he is half elf. I was taken aback at first because this is my first time seeing anyone who wasn't human but I guess their are a lot more races out there such of orcs, dwarves, and even draconians who are the offspring of a dragon and a human. Jackel being an elf made him the target of bigotry from the lord and most people around and visiting the manor. Other races besides humans are frowned Upon not only in this kingdom but also my home kingdom as well which explains why I have never seen any other races. Jackel has yet to tell me how he ended up here in this kingdom nor has he told me where he is from either.

The memory of my family still haunts me, but the intensity has gone down quite a bit and Jackel has also been very willing to talk to me when I feel down or start to get depressed. Granted I don't think I am ever going to fully get over their death, I have come a long ways since and am able to better manage the memory then when I was a child.

"Hey, we gotta prepare lunch, what are you slacking off for"

I recognize the voice of Jackel behind me

"Sorry I guess I was lost In thought, I will be over there after I finish folding the linen"

"You should be quick or else the lord will punish us again"

"Don't worry I will be"

Jackel walks away, as I finish folding the last of the linen in my arms, I catch up to him and we make our way to the kitchen.

"What obscured meal do you think the lord wants us to prepare today?" I ask Jackel in a sarcastic manor.

"Don't say things like that, you will get caught and have to deal with lord potterburn being on your ass"

"That's if I get caught, cmon you think anyone here thinks that lowley servants like us are worth listening to, hell they won't listen to us even if we are dying, and to be honest I am pretty damn sure Lord potterburn is trying to kill us so he doesn't need to fulfill his end of the contract we were forced to sign"

"You are outrageous, even if he was it would go against the churches doctrine and if he got caught he and his family would be stripped of their title and he would be executed"

"Like I said before if he got caught, and if he continues to not be caught he will get away Scot free"

"I am sure he is not trying to let us die"

"Are you sure because he does seem to love overworking us and being absent when one of us servants falls ill for some mysterious reason"

"I agree he could be way better as far as caring for us, that is undeniable, but causing him of intentionly putting us in harms way. You could get yourself executed for saying such things without any evidence to support your claim, and that's not even mentioning that we are servants and he is a noble, who do you thing the court will believe"

"Is his treatment of us not obvious?"

"Marcus your contract is over in two years just focus on doing your job, and when you are free you will have a mini fortune to start life with, I mean with that kind of money I doubt any lady in her right mind would turn you down"

"As if women would solve my problems, I have nowhere to start, and it would cost me that mini fortune just to get back to my home, where there might be a chance I can claim my dead fathers title if it as well as our land have not already been given away, and here I only have you and that's it, your contract won't end for another five years, what am I supposed to do when I get out, I will literally be starting from less than anyone"

"Well I think you focus on surviving and making a name for yourself."
