Chapter 181: What Storms Haven't I Seen?
Tom, in the Firelink Shrine, was also curious. Everything before him was completely different from the previous game. Apart from the name "Firelink Shrine," the only remnant was the newly lit bonfire on the ground.
Without the thrones of the Lords of Cinder, the Firelink Shrine was still outdoors, surrounded by crumbling ruins. The only thing he saw was an NPC sitting on a wooden stake, looking like a mercenary.
"Hey! You've arrived just in time! It's been ages since I've seen anyone new."
"I guess you're here for one of those things, right? The Undead Mission or something... it's the same for everyone."
"When you get cursed, it's all over. Staying in the Undead Asylum is the best decision... You've suffered!".
"But it doesn't matter. I'm free anyway, so I'll teach you."
"There are two Bells of Awakening mentioned in the Undead Mission. One is up here, in the bell tower of the Undead Church; the other is in the depths, in the ancient ruins under Blighttown. They say that ringing them will cause something, but... who knows what? At least, I've never heard what happened afterwards... but it doesn't matter. Let's go! Isn't this the reason you came to this damned land of the undead? Hehehe...".
With this simple exchange, Tom immediately understood that this mercenary-looking NPC was essentially the Crestfallen Knight of this game. And compared to the Crestfallen Knight from the previous game, this one was remarkably more talkative.
And another crucial point: the Crestfallen Knight of the previous game was simply disheartened. The Crestfallen Knight of this game was also sarcastic, and his words sounded like a veiled insult. The words "get ready to suffer," "just to suffer," and the final "hehehe" sounded even more sarcastic.
It was like chatting with someone and they replied with a "smiley face" emoticon or a "hehe". There was a strong irony!.
For an instant, Tom, looking at the Knight's Broadsword in his hand, wanted to counterattack with a fierce blow. But at the crucial moment, he stopped.
This was mainly because he thought of the Crestfallen Knight from the previous game. He had assumed he was a weakling, but after three attacks, he received a lesson and was trapped inside the Firelink Shrine. Unfortunately, Dark Souls has a peculiarity: the screen to light a bonfire or the inventory screen do not freeze time. So, in the Firelink Shrine, he was too late to light the bonfire and teleport to another place, and he was finally hacked to death.
However, Tom obtained useful information from him, such as the location of two bells: one in the bell tower of the Undead Church and the other in the ancient ruins under Blighttown. This coincided with the information that the knight in the cell had given him, although he still did not know the location of the bell tower of the Undead Church and Blighttown.
But since they mentioned the underground, they had to go underground.
Tom then wandered through the Firelink Shrine, but something seemed strange: the Fire Keeper had disappeared.
Also, you can level up directly at the bonfire without having to find the Fire Keeper.
'Remember that this was the original function of the Fire Keeper! Have they canceled the Fire Keeper? But that shouldn't be!'.
The Fire Keeper is a very popular NPC in the Dark Souls series. Many players even entered the world of Dark Souls simply because of their intrigue.
'How could such a character be canceled? Impossible!'.
Tom explored the Firelink Shrine, collecting three Humanities and a Fire Pot on the way.
Just like the Firelink Shrine in the previous game, there were many accessible areas around it, and there were also some zombies. However, Tom was surprised to accidentally fall into a dark pit. Just when he thought he was going to die, he found several treasure chests below.
Due to his painful experience with the treasure chest monsters in the previous game, Tom was always on guard when he saw these treasure chests, ready to attack them first. But what surprised him the most was that all the treasure chests were real, although they did not contain anything valuable.
He only got a red eyeball, a mace, some bone fragments, and an amulet.
The Firelink Shrine was not huge, but it was divided into several levels, like an elevator. While wandering, Tom felt a little lost. He found the Fire Keeper he was looking for, but she seemed to be a prisoner and did not speak to him.
Wandering through the Firelink Shrine as if it were a market, Tom clearly noticed a difference from the previous game. The map was much more complex, and the next stage did not seem to teleport through a bonfire. In the previous game, getting to the first Wall of Lothric would have been simple, teleporting directly from the Firelink Shrine.
But now, the teleport icon on the bonfire was gray, which clearly required certain conditions. This is also something that Alex added to the interface. After all, he still has to offer players something to look forward to. That is, the game still retains the teleport function, but it cannot be used in the early stages.
When can it be used? That has nothing to do with Alex. It depends on the player's effort!.
After wandering through the Firelink Shrine for a good while, Tom felt very frustrated not having any idea where to go. However, he found a path full of gravestones, the same one he found when he got the treasure chest. Upon passing, the skeletons on the ground immediately crowded together, which gave it a very gloomy look.
By carefully hooking a skeleton soldier, Tom discovered that the monster's health was quite high. It took him five or six blows to kill it. However, when using the hammer he got before, although the panel attack is only two points greater than that of the broadsword, the damage when hitting the skeleton is greater. Obviously, it is due to the weapon's attack attribute.
It is definitely a little more difficult than the previous game. The new monsters have more life!
"Also, I think I'll go to the Undead Parish and the underground ruins now. They seem to have something to do with death and the underground, so this path should lead to the Undead Parish." Tom looked at the path and reflected.
But no matter what, it's better to take a look.
And as a former Firelink Bearer, what storms and waves hasn't he seen?.
