After 24 hours in the place they kept me, the police officer finally came to unlock the door.
"Ms. Hannah, you can come out."
I stood up with shock written all over my face.
"Did she come for me? Who bailed me out?" I asked because I didn't expect to be out by now. Maybe he came back to bail me out… or perhaps my foster mother. I had no idea what was going on.
I stepped out and followed the officer to the table to clear the remaining procedures. Then he said, "Meet Mrs. Eleanor Khian, she bailed you out."
Even as I approached the table, I had already noticed a woman with silver hair like someone who just stepped out of a soap opera. I thought maybe she came to file a complaint for theft or something minor. But she? She bailed me out? Why?
Who is she? Could she be his mother? Or his girlfriend? His wife? And that name… it felt familiar, like I had heard it before, but I couldn't remember where.
I turned to face her.
"Thank you very much for helping me, but who are you, and why did you help me?" I asked her, my voice filled with confusion and surprise.
"Tsssk. This child is so disrespectful. Instead of being grateful that someone finally came for you, you're here questioning her," the police officer cut in. He turned to the woman. "Don't mind her, ma. She has a long mouth and disrespects elders very much."
She was addressed like an elderly person, but she looked young in appearance l ll maybe around forty or fifty. She nodded and then called over her assistant.
"This is Laura, my Beta. I guess you must have heard of Betas and Alphas. I am not that strong, but she will attend to you," she said, glancing between Laura and me. "I'll be outside the station. If you're done with the rest of your procedures here, meet me there."
She stood up and walked outside.
I understood what "Beta" meant. My adopted father was a castaway Beta they're second in command after Alphas. So yes, I knew what she was talking about.
Laura held me by the arm and made eye contact with the officer before dragging me out. I struggled, trying to shake off her hand, but I couldn't. She was too strong. Then, as the pain started getting intense, something deep inside me stirred and spoke:
Leave her alone.
Right after that, Laura let go of my arm, and a strong force pushed me backward.
I landed awkwardly, twisting my fingers because that was what I used to break the fall.
"What the f**k oh my God!" I screamed when I saw how badly cracked my fingers looked.
I stared at Laura.
"Did you bail me out for this? To torture me?! Did he send you to torture me?!"
Then the lady Ms. Eleanor walked toward me, held out her hand, and helped me up. The pain was so intense I couldn't even focus on what was going on.
"Please take me to the hospital. Or at least let me go to the hospital, please. I don't know what's happening," I pleaded.
"Keep quiet," Ms. Eleanor ordered.
Immediately, I couldn't move my mouth anymore. I watched helplessly as she took my fingers and twisted them back into place.
"Aahhhhh!" I screamed, then paused. I looked at my fingers.
"Wait… I don't feel any pain." I moved my hands again, confused. Then I turned to Ms. Eleanor. "What the f wait, it really doesn't hurt anymore."
I was completely stunned. I turned to her, still shaken.
"Can you explain this? Did you use your Alpha order on me? Did you… heal me?"
Ms. Eleanor turned to her Beta and said something in her mind.
I am sure she's one of us… our bloodline.
But I heard it.
"What bloodline? What the heck is happening?! I know you both are like my adopted family, but I need more clarification. You bailed me out without a reason, and now you're talking about bloodline. What's happening, please?"
"Come. Follow me. I can see you're really one of us, since you heard what I said in my mind."
She hadn't even moved yet, but something inside me responded.
Yes, Grand Alpha.
Grand what?
I looked at her. "Did you hear that?"
The Beta stared at me.
"Seems you just unlocked something in you."
I ignored what she said and hissed.
"I just want to leave these weird people," I muttered to myself.
"Maybe it's just my instinct," I wrote it off.
She took me to a quiet place and ordered me to sit down and prepare myself for what she was about to tell me. She said there's a story I need to hear.
"First of all, I would like to apologize to you. I am so sorry."
"Sorry for what?" I asked. But the scary Ms. Laura gave me a sharp look that shut me up immediately.
Ms. Eleanor continued. "This is a story about two people. Ms. Rebecca got married to Mr. Leonardo even when their mother-in-law was against it, but they still went ahead with the marriage. When the mother-in-law found out that Ms. Rebecca was pregnant, she assumed it was a son. But Rebecca was pregnant with a girl. She was against it because Rebecca was a Sentinel, and Mr. Leonardo was a werewolf an Alpha."
I cut her off immediately, this sounds like the dream have been dreaming for quite a long time but I still don't know where this is going
"So where is this going?" I asked, but nobody answered me.
Instead, Ms. Eleanor kept speaking.
"She wanted a child who would continue their bloodline. So when Rebecca gave birth to a female, the mother-in-law got rid of the child. She dropped her off at the orphanage St. Louis Orphanage. Unfortunately, Rebecca passed away. The mother-in-law told her son that both Rebecca and their child had died. And since Sentinels don't have the power to heal like werewolves, Leonardo believed her. He mourned them for months before getting remarried. He was titled Alpha after the mother-in-law retired."
She paused and drank a glass of water.
"So what does that have to do with me now?" I asked.
"That child is you, Hannah. And the mother-in-law…" she exhaled and rubbed her forehead. "Is me."
She dropped the bomb without blinking.
