Chapter 5 - The prom

Lena's pov

The dorm lounge buzzed with excitement as everyone talked about the upcoming university prom—the biggest event of the semester. For most, it was just a night to dress up, dance, and have fun. For me, it was so much more complicated.

I stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the emerald green dress I'd picked out. The fabric shimmered softly in the light, hugging my figure just enough to feel elegant without drawing too much attention. The sweetheart neckline and flowing mid-calf skirt made it perfect for the night ahead—something simple, classy, and believable.

Later, I met Ethan in the dorm common area to talk about the prom.

"If we go together," I said carefully, "people will think we're actually a couple."

He looked at me, surprised. "Well… isn't that the point? To make your ex jealous?"

I smiled weakly, trying to keep things casual. "Yeah, but it's more than just standing side by side. We have to seem like we belong together. Every glance, every touch, every moment—it has to feel real. Otherwise, people will start asking questions."

He raised an eyebrow. "Sounds like we'll have to be good actors."

"We have to be perfect," I said quietly. "Because this prom isn't just any party. It's the one night when everyone will be watching."

Ethan's grin softened, and he gave my hand a reassuring squeeze. "Don't worry. We'll make it work. Fake boyfriend or not, I've got your back."

Despite the nerves knotting my stomach, his confidence made me feel like maybe I wouldn't have to do this alone.

But even as I smiled back, I kept my real secret locked away. The truth about why the prom mattered… the dangerous mission I was carrying—those were things Ethan couldn't know.
