Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Dawn's Arrival

The world outside was still cloaked in the fragile quiet of early morning, the city's towering skyscrapers etched faintly against a pale pink horizon. The sun had not yet fully risen, but its gentle light seeped through the cracks in the curtains, painting soft streaks across the faded carpet and peeling wallpaper of Jia's tiny apartment.

Inside, the air was thick with silence—heavy and almost sacred after the storm of the night before.

Mei Lin lay awake on the threadbare couch, eyes fixed on the cracked ceiling. Sleep had abandoned her hours ago, replaced by a burning storm that twisted through her veins. The night had been a cruel thief, stealing every ounce of rest and replacing it with a ruthless determination.

She couldn't stop thinking about Wei.

About how he'd shattered Jia's heart with cold words that cut deeper than any blade.

About the plan forming in her mind—a plan that would make him pay.

No one played with her best friend and walked away unscathed.

The Weight of the Night: Every sound in the apartment seemed amplified, the creak of the old wooden floor, the distant hum of the city waking up, the steady ticking of the cracked clock on the wall. Mei Lin's fingers curled tightly around the edge of the couch cushion, nails digging into fabric as her thoughts raced.

She replayed Jia's heartbreak over and over the sobs, the furious curses, the bitter, hollow laughter. The pain wasn't just Jia's. It was theirs.

The warmth of friendship had transformed into an unyielding fire of vengeance in Mei Lin's heart.

Jia stirred awake beside her, rubbing sleep from her eyes, her face pale but her gaze sharp.

"Can't sleep either?" Mei Lin whispered, voice low but fierce.

Jia nodded, her lips trembling slightly. "He didn't just break up with me. He humiliated me. Like I was nothing."

Mei Lin reached out and took Jia's hand in hers, squeezing firmly.

"We're going to fix this. Together."

Jia's eyes shone with the first flicker of hope she'd shown in days.

The small apartment buzzed quietly as the two women prepared for the day ahead. Mei Lin pulled on dark jeans and a leather jacket, the tough fabric grounding her like armor. She tied her long hair back into a no-nonsense ponytail, her face set with grim determination.

Jia dressed more hesitantly, her hands shaking slightly as she buttoned her worn blouse.

They shared a brief look, unspoken strength and solidarity passing between them.

No words were needed.

Outside, the city was slowly stirring to life. The first cars began to hum on the streets, street vendors arranged their carts, and office workers in crisp suits hurried past with purpose.

Mei Lin and Jia stepped out into the cool morning air. The chill bit at their cheeks but did little to dull their resolve. The sky was a canvas of soft pastels, pinks, blues, and golds blending seamlessly as dawn broke.

They walked side by side, shadows stretching long behind them as the city's heartbeat quickened.

Every step felt like a silent promise—to themselves, to each other, and to the justice they sought.

They reached the edge of Wei's towering corporate empire, the glass building gleaming like a monolith of power and cold ambition.

The sight was daunting, but Mei Lin's grip on Jia's hand tightened.

"We go in together," Mei Lin said softly. "No backing down."

Jia nodded, determination flaring in her eyes.

For a moment, they simply stood there, two warriors ready to face the storm.

And as the sun finally spilled over the horizon, bathing the city in warm light, Mei Lin felt a fierce certainty settle in her chest.

Today, the game would change.

Today, Wei would learn that hurting her best friend meant waking a storm unlike any he'd ever faced.

They moved carefully along the shadowed edge of the parking lot, crouching low behind rows of sleek black cars. The morning air was crisp and sharp, carrying the distant hum of city traffic and the muffled footsteps of early workers arriving for the day.

The sun was climbing higher now, splashing bright light across the concrete and casting long, distorted shadows of the vehicles they hid behind. Mei Lin's heart pounded loudly in her chest, a wild drumbeat of nerves and resolve.

Every breath felt measured, every movement deliberate.

Office workers in tailored suits streamed in and out of the glass doors, their chatter and clacking heels echoing off the polished surfaces. The scent of fresh coffee mingled with the metallic tang of the parking lot.

Jia's eyes flicked anxiously across the lot, scanning every figure for the one they sought.

"Do you see him?" Mei Lin whispered, her voice barely audible.

Jia nodded, pointing discreetly to the entrance.

There, emerging from the building.. was Wei.

Wei's posture was arrogant, confidence radiating in every step. His crisp black suit was impeccable, the silk of his tie shimmering faintly in the sunlight. He spoke animatedly on his phone, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips, oblivious to the storm about to descend.

But Wei wasn't alone.

Walking beside him was a man whose presence commanded immediate attention.

Tall and strikingly handsome, the stranger moved with a calm grace, his eyes sharp and unreadable beneath thick brows. His dark hair was perfectly styled, and his tailored suit, dark gray with a subtle sheen clung to his lean frame. The silver tie at his neck caught the light, glinting like a beacon of quiet power.

Mei Lin found herself momentarily distracted by the man's aura, an intoxicating mix of elegance and strength that contrasted sharply with Wei's brash demeanor.

Jia's sharp elbow jabbed into Mei Lin's side, breaking her reverie.

"Focus!" Jia hissed. "Remember why we're here."

Mei Lin blinked, shaking off the brief distraction.

"Right. The plan."

They crouched low, waiting for the right moment. The parking lot was a labyrinth of steel and shadows, the perfect cover for what was about to unfold.

Minutes stretched like hours.

The sun climbed steadily, casting bright reflections off car windows and glinting off polished shoes.

Then, Wei glanced around, phone slipping from his ear to ear eagerly.

Mei Lin's muscles coiled like a spring.

The time had come.

Beside Wei, the tall stranger's calm facade began to crack. His jaw tightened, and his eyes darted sharply toward the building entrance as if expecting someone, his driver or an important aide, who was inexplicably late. His hands clenched into fists at his sides, and though his lips moved in a low murmur, the tension in his body spoke volumes. He wasn't yelling, but his frustration simmered just beneath the surface, his breath coming in quick, shallow bursts as he anxiously scanned the parking lot.

"Come on," he muttered under his breath, voice edged with impatience, glancing repeatedly at his watch and then back toward the glass doors. Time was slipping away, and whatever meeting awaited was important and evidently running late.

Wei gave a curt nod, but the stranger's irritation was impossible to ignore.

Their strained energy hung thick in the air, making the atmosphere crackle with an electric tension that even Mei Lin and Jia could feel from their hiding spot.

Jia exchanged a determined look with Mei Lin.

They rose from their hiding spot, feet crunching softly on gravel.

The world seemed to hold its breath as they closed the distance.

Mei Lin's voice rang out, sharp and fierce.

"Wei!"

The moment had arrived.

---

The moment Mei Lin and Jia burst from behind the cars, the quiet tension exploded into a chaotic storm.

"Wei!" Mei Lin's voice rang out sharp and fierce.

Wei spun around, surprise flashing across his face, then annoyance. "What the...?"

Before he could finish, Jia lunged forward, fists flying.

Wei barely had time to react before a sudden, fierce slap landed squarely across his cheek.

"Hey! What the hell?" Wei sputtered, clutching his face.

Jia grinned wildly, eyes blazing. "That's for breaking my heart!"

Mei Lin was already on the other side, landing a swift jab to Wei's ribs, making him grunt and stumble sideways.

But Wei, ever the coward, did the one thing no one expected, he slapped Jia back.

The handprint blossomed red on her cheek.

"Oh no you didn't!" Mei Lin screamed, launching herself at Wei like a whirlwind.

The tall stranger stepped forward, hands raised not in peace, but in restraint.

"Ladies," he said, voice low and calm but with an edge of warning, "I'm not looking for trouble."

His body was taut, ready to spring, but he held back, clearly unwilling to harm women.

Jia wiped the handprint off her cheek and grinned.

"Well, that's too bad," she said, cracking her knuckles.

What followed was less a fight and more a slapstick ballet of flailing limbs and comedic missteps.

Mei Lin charged at the stranger, who effortlessly sidestepped, only to trip over a rogue parking block and land unceremoniously on his backside.

Jia tried to pin Wei against a car, but slipped on spilled coffee, sliding halfway across the hood before regaining her footing.

Wei, attempting to regain control, tried to shove Mei Lin away, but she ducked, causing him to stumble and knock his own head on the car door.

"Oops!" Mei Lin teased, barely containing a laugh.

Despite their chaos, the ladies' fury was relentless.

They battered Wei with quick jabs and punches, laughing at his increasingly disoriented state.

The stranger got up, rubbing his backside, clearly annoyed but still holding back.

Then Wei, in a desperate move, swung wildly only to be caught by Jia's knee in the stomach.

"Not so tough now, huh?" she taunted, a wild grin lighting up her face.

Panting and bruised, Wei lay on the ground, groaning.

The stranger dusted himself off, shooting a glare at Wei.

"You're lucky I held back," he said, voice cold.

Mei Lin and Jia exchanged triumphant glances.

"Next time you break a girl's heart," Mei Lin said, "think twice."

They walked away laughing, leaving Wei and the stranger to recover from the most ridiculous beating of their lives.

Wei struggled to push himself up from the rough concrete, his face a roadmap of bruises and humiliation. His pride burned hotter than his bruises, but before he could say anything, the tall stranger brushed off the dust from his clothes and stepped forward with an icy calm that froze Wei in place.

Wei's eyes widened as recognition dawned, His boss the CEO looking at him with killing intent.

The aloof CEO himself, standing there like a storm ready to break.

Wei's cheeks flushed with embarrassment, the color deepening as Jinnian's cold gaze locked onto him. The crowd that had gathered moments before now scattered quickly, murmurs fading like a dying wind once they recognized the man.

"Apologies, sir," Wei stammered, lowering his gaze. "This won't happen again."

Jinnian's voice was low, sharp, and devoid of warmth. "It shouldn't have happened at all."

Wei swallowed hard, feeling the weight of his boss's disapproval like a physical blow.

The aloof CEO's icy demeanor left no room for excuses.

Jinnian's eyes flicked toward the direction Mei Lin and Jia had vanished.

Jinnian's lips pressed into a thin line.

The Decision to Dig Deeper

As Wei fidgeted under his boss's piercing stare, Jinnian's mind was already working.

These women had shaken his assistant, to the core.

There was something more beneath the surface.

Jinnian decided then and there: he would find out who they were and what their connection to Wei really meant.

Wei's embarrassment deepened as Jinnian turned sharply and strode back toward the building, his steps echoing authority.

Wei hesitated, then followed, glancing anxiously at the empty parking lot where Mei Lin and Jia had disappeared.

---

The early morning sunlight crept through the threadbare curtains of Jia's small apartment, illuminating the cramped living room where Mei Lin sat with her triplets nestled close. The worn sofa groaned under the weight of their presence, and the faint scent of detergent mixed with the lingering sting of bruises.

Mei Lin's gaze drifted toward the cracked ceiling, her heart heavy with the memory of the landlord's cold voice just days ago.

"Pay by tomorrow or you're out."

She had no choice but to pack up their few belongings and move in with Jia, her oldest and closest friend, whose kindness had no limits.

Jia leaned against the kitchen counter, watching Mei Lin with tired eyes.

"You're carrying the world on your shoulders," Jia said softly.

Mei Lin swallowed hard, her voice cracking. "I don't know how much longer I can do this."

The triplets squirmed in her lap, innocent and unaware, their needs pulling at her heart.

Jia cracked a sly grin, breaking the tension.

"Hey, remember last night? When we beat up Wei and that fancy stranger? Priceless."

Mei Lin's lips twitched, the corners lifting despite herself.

"Yeah, they didn't see it coming," Jia continued, "those guys looked like they just walked off some drama series like, 'Oh no, not two furious moms!' I swear, I almost laughed when Wei slapped me. Like, dude, you're really brave or really stupid."

Mei Lin chuckled, the sound shaky but genuine.

"That fight... it was crazy," Mei Lin admitted. "But it made me realize something."

Jia raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

"That no matter how bad things get... I'm not alone. We've got each other."

Jia's smile softened, and she reached over to squeeze Mei Lin's hand.

"Exactly. No one messes with us. We're fighters."

A new day:

Though the apartment was small and crowded, filled with baby toys and makeshift beds, Mei Lin felt a flicker of hope.

Together, with Jia and her children, she could face whatever came next.

Because sometimes, the strongest families are the ones you build yourself.
