Chapter 298 - Chapter 298: Night of the Massacre

Time passed like water...

Tonight, the sky was dark and the moon cast a somber glow. Walking the streets, you could feel a heavy aura lingering in the air, as if warning that this night would be anything but ordinary.

Above the Hokage building, a flock of crows flew by.

Hiruzen Sarutobi gazed at the figure before him and asked, "Itachi, have you truly made your decision? Are you willing to bear everything alone?"

Under the pale moonlight, Itachi knelt halfway on one knee—no one could see his expression clearly. He remained silent for a long moment, then finally resolved himself and uttered just one word: "Yes."

Though softly spoken, his voice held an unprecedented firmness.

Hiruzen looked at Itachi with complex eyes. In his aged, clouded gaze swirled layers of emotion. After exhaling deeply, he said, "After tonight, you will become a rogue ninja of Konoha. Go now. I'll take care of your younger brother. He will attend school like other children and grow up to be a Konoha ninja. No one in Konoha will harm him. This is my promise to you—and it lasts forever."

Itachi slowly rose. As he turned his head slightly, he took a deep breath and said, "Then... I'll leave him to you."

After leaving the Hokage building, Itachi reappeared perched atop a telephone pole, half-squatting as he looked down upon his entire clan compound. Unconsciously, his eyes had transformed into Mangekyō—with black flames seemingly burning within one eye.

"It seems you've made your choice," a vague voice echoed beside Itachi's ear.

Itachi didn't seem surprised by the voice. Expressionless, he simply replied, "Don't forget our agreement."

"Don't worry. The members of the security force won't interfere with your work. However..."

"What is it?"

"All those close to you remain within the clan compound. Can you really do this? Actually, I could—"

Itachi interrupted, "That isn't your concern."

"Fine. I'll wait for you outside Konoha village once this is done."

As these words faded away, the mysterious voice disappeared too. Itachi also left the telephone pole, his sheathed ninja blade already drawn behind him.

Has it finally begun?

Anya—who had been waiting for this day—clearly understood what was about to unfold. Since the very beginning of his transmigration, deep down inside, this event was the one thing he feared most. At first, fear surged from that fright, but as his strength grew, so did that fear fade completely, replaced instead with the resolve to save others.

Itachi, my son in all but blood—you're sacrificing clan members to preserve the Uchiha Clan's honor, protect peace across the entire village, and shoulder darkness alone. I can understand all that. But killing your own parents? That part, I truly cannot accept. Ever since Shisui's death, you must have foreseen this outcome. Have you spent the past two years running from it?

Sigh... After all, he's still just a child, Anya muttered, vanishing from within the luxury mansion.

Tonight, the Uchiha compound lay eerily silent—far scarier than usual. There were none of the usual signs of life. Dim lighting revealed only pitch-black shadows everywhere, exuding a suffocating sense of death. A faint trace of blood lingered in the air.

Darkness. Dread. Horror!

Down a long hallway, Itachi walked forward. Ahead, far within, seemed to hide some terrifying creature capable of devouring all life.

The blade was unsheathed. The blood had already gone cold.

Stepping into the nearest house, a blood-curdling scream echoed as the massacre began with blood soaking into the paper-paneled screens.

Emotionally restrained, Itachi held nothing back. Under the penetrating vision of his Sharingan, no one from the Uchiha compound was spared—neither newborn infants nor elderly people with white hair. Whether they begged for mercy or tried to resist, all fell into pools of blood.

Finally, the path ended. Inside the last room stood the two people Itachi found hardest to face tonight. With such commotion happening, how could Fugaku remain unaware? Yet he had never come out to stop anything, probably having already braced himself for the worst scenario.

Itachi pushed open the sliding door to find Fugaku and Mikoto sitting on the tatami floor with their backs to him.

Fugaku spoke calmly, "I see. So you've sided with them."

Itachi knelt down and called out, "Dad... Mom..."

Mikoto, already prepared for death, comforted him, "We understand, Itachi."

Fugaku continued, "Itachi, promise me one last thing—please take care of Sasuke."

A tear slid down Itachi's cheek, landing on his blood-stained ninja blade. His body trembled as the sword, once gripped tightly, now felt unbearably heavy.

Fugaku said, "Don't be afraid. You've made this decision yourself, haven't you? Compared to yours, our suffering will last only an instant. Even if we don't share the same thoughts, we're still proud of you. You are a kind child."

Tears already filled Itachi's face. The butcher knife in his hand simply wouldn't swing downward. However reluctant or unwilling he felt inside, this final blow ultimately had to come.

Just as the blade was about to strike, a steady voice entered Itachi's mind.

[Kotoamatsukami!]

Utilizing the Hashirama's Essence within his body, the ultimate genjutsu Kotoamatsukami successfully activated for the first time here. Hidden deep beneath the earth, Anya infiltrated Itachi's brain without warning, rewriting his willpower.

Trapped within the illusion, Itachi sensed himself execute a Single Blade Strike, directly killing his parents.

In reality, the moment Fugaku died, Anya suddenly appeared, using genjutsu to stun Mikoto before rescuing her from the deadly strike. He tossed down a previously prepared clone body, casually slicing it to create the false impression that both had been killed simultaneously.

Meanwhile, Anya acquired two additional Sharingan eyes from Fugaku's corpse. Using Medical Ninjutsu, in less than two seconds, Fugaku's Mangekyō Sharingan were successfully replaced. After completing everything flawlessly, Anya carried Mikoto away silently, vanishing as though he'd never existed at all.

When Itachi finally awakened from the illusion, what greeted his eyes were the corpses of his father Fugaku and mother Mikoto.

This plan had actually been formulated from the very moment Shisui perished. Throughout the process, Anya ran countless simulations and considered every possible scenario to eliminate any unexpected situations.

Although the events seemed to unfold within mere seconds, in truth they consumed immense effort from Anya. The result was exactly as expected—Mikoto was rescued successfully, and Fugaku's Mangekyō Sharingan was obtained.

Very few knew about Fugaku possessing a Mangekyō. A pair of ordinary Three Tomoe Sharingan would suffice to deceive Konoha. All those Sharingan eyes must have delighted Danzo beyond measure. Little did he know, however, the Hashirama's Essence had already fallen into Anya's hands.

Looking at Mikoto peacefully asleep in his arms, Anya made up his mind to take her away from Konoha and never let her return to this den of strife.

After what happened tonight, the lingering question deep in Anya's heart was finally answered. That explained why Itachi had been able to destroy the entire Uchiha Clan alone—Obito had been involved as well. In fact, it was Obito who had single-handedly taken down the Uchiha Police Force. No wonder things turned out that way.

Arriving outside the village, a simple carriage was already waiting there, driven by an old familiar face who hadn't appeared for quite some time—Genzo.

After gently placing Mikoto on the carriage, Anya solemnly said to Genzo, "Still remember what I instructed?"

Genzo respectfully replied, "Of course—treat her just as I would treat you. Grant every request she makes, except for leaving the village."

Anya added one more point, "Don't tell her how she was rescued. Just say she was brought here by a mysterious figure."

"Yes."

"Go then."

Driving the carriage forward, Genzo clearly understood how much this woman meant to Anya. At the same time, he couldn't help but wonder whether it was precisely for her that Anya had once promised not to bring any conflict into Takigakure. That way, she could live peacefully in a worry-free village.
