Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 — The Vault in the Night

The city lay under a thick blanket of darkness, the hum of distant streetlights and the occasional flicker of neon signs casting eerie glows on wet asphalt. Silence ruled the back alleys where Kane crouched beside Maya and Lena, each breathing measured, their bodies taut with anticipation.

The bank was a fortress — one of the last remaining bastions of wealth and order before the world unraveled. Tonight, they would breach its heart and secure the lifeblood for their future.

Kane's eyes scanned the rear entrance — a heavy steel door concealed behind dumpsters and graffiti-stained walls. The faint scent of damp concrete filled his nostrils. Time was precious.

Maya's fingers hovered over her portable hacking device. "Security feeds are looping," she whispered into the comm-link. "We've got fifteen minutes before the system resets and alarms trigger."

Lena's gaze pierced the shadows, every muscle ready. "No mistakes. Move fast, move quiet."

With a deft movement, Lena slipped the lock open. The door creaked softly, allowing them entry into the cool, sterile corridors of the bank's underbelly. The faint echo of their footsteps bounced between polished tiles and steel walls.

Ahead, the vault — a massive steel giant, humming with electronic locks and biometric sensors. To an outsider, impregnable. To them, a challenge.

Maya crouched before a keypad, her fingers flying across the screen with practiced ease. "Bypass is almost done. Give me three more seconds."

Kane crouched beside her, senses sharp. He studied the cold metal, calculating every risk.

The lock clicked. The vault door groaned open, revealing a cavernous chamber stacked with valuables — piles of cash, gold bars, and safety deposit boxes gleaming under dim lighting.

Lena moved forward, grabbing the first heavy backpack loaded with bundles of cash.

Kane's eyes narrowed. He stepped forward silently, placing a hand on the bag.

Without a word, he activated the hidden power locked deep within the system — a shimmer of golden light enveloped the pack, and in an instant, it vanished from sight.

Maya and Lena glanced over, puzzled by his pause but said nothing.

Kane's voice remained steady in the comm-link, "Keep moving. We need to pack what we can."

Lena hefted another bag and started toward the exit, unaware of Kane's secret.

As she moved, Kane reached out again, touching the bag lightly. Another shimmer, and the weight dissolved into nothingness — stored securely in his infinite inventory.

Inside, Maya's fingers worked furiously, monitoring the security system.

"Patrol schedules have shifted," she warned. "You've got less than ten minutes before backup arrives."

Kane nodded, signaling Lena to quicken her pace.

The tension mounted. Every heartbeat was a countdown. Every shadow a threat.

They gathered more loot, Kane's hands briefly touching each bag, silently absorbing the heavy weight into his invisible vault.

Neither Maya nor Lena suspected the true scale of their haul — their eyes only catching the light touch Kane gave before bags vanished.

Suddenly, distant footsteps echoed — faster, closer.

"Move!" Kane hissed, guiding them into darker shadows.

Lena's breath was quick, but controlled. Maya's eyes darted nervously at the digital feeds.

They slipped through the corridors, every step timed, every breath silent.

Outside, rain began to fall in soft sheets, masking their escape.

The SUV waited like a patient beast, engine idling.

They piled in, soaked but triumphant.

Later, Kane checked the system inventory quietly. The numbers glowed far beyond what anyone could imagine.

More than enough funds — secured without burden or risk.

A secret advantage he alone wielded.

Maya looked over at Kane as the city's rain blurred the window. "You handled yourself well in there," she said softly.

Lena smiled tiredly. "Yeah. Like you'd done this a hundred times before."

Kane only smiled faintly, keeping his secret locked tight.

Outside, the apocalypse's clock ticked relentlessly onward.

But for now, Kane held the future in his hands — unseen, unstoppable, and ready.
