"Your birthday," he said easily. "And Timothy's."
Her laugh came out surprised and light. "Those aren't even close together."
"I know," he said. "Yours is June. His is April. I've memorized them."
Bella didn't say anything and just laughed.
"So, what are your plans for Christmas?" Jake asked, glancing briefly at Bella.
Her chest did that soft, aching thing again. "I don't really have plans for Christmas," she admitted. "It's still two months away. I figured I'd take my time and think about it."
Jake nodded. "That's good. No rushing."
He slowed the car slightly as they neared her street, the familiar turns coming into view. Timothy shifted again in his sleep, sighing.
Jake glanced at him in the rearview mirror, then back at Bella. His expression changed although not dramatically, but enough that she noticed. Something thoughtful settled into his features.
"Bella," he said quietly, "can I ask you something?"
