Chapter 20 - Chapter 20

The crisp chill of early November carried through Elysion Park, mingling with the warm scents of caramelized nuts, fresh stroopwafels, and the earthy tang of damp autumn leaves. The sky was a pale blue canvas streaked with the faintest wisps of cloud, and the low afternoon sun cast long golden shadows across the pathways.

Lucas stepped out of the Globe & Griddle's side door, coffee in hand, and paused to take in the scene. Guests bustled between rides, clutching souvenir bags and cups of hot chocolate. The Explorer's Landing plaza was alive with music and laughter, the kind of atmosphere he had only dreamed about when he first inherited the park.

"Busy for a closing day," Walter's voice came from behind, the older man adjusting his scarf as he joined Lucas.

Lucas smiled. "I'm not complaining. Feels like half the town came out for this."

Walter glanced toward the Jungle Zone, where the log flume's final drop sent up a glittering spray under the afternoon sun. "And they'll be talking about it all winter. The entrance, the flume… you've set a high bar for next year."

Lucas took a sip of coffee, letting his gaze drift toward the construction fencing beyond the Jungle Zone — a quiet reminder of what was coming next. "That's the plan."

As they walked toward the Explorer Zone, the Wild Mouse roared past on its final turn, riders' laughter spilling into the crisp air. Vendors called out last-day discounts, and families took group photos against the newly themed backdrops.

It didn't feel like an ending. Not yet.

They crossed into the Explorer Zone, where the late-afternoon light caught the brass details of the streetlamps and the warm tones of the stone-patterned pathways. The area still buzzed with energy — kids running between the balloon ride and the playground while parents queued at snack stands for one last treat before the season ended.

Walter adjusted his pace to match Lucas'. "Once the gates close tonight, the crews move in first thing tomorrow?"

Lucas nodded. "Flat ride site in the Explorer Zone gets cleared immediately. Fencing's ready to go, and groundwork should start before the week's out. If we move fast, we can get it tested and open for March."

"And the coaster?" Walter asked, lowering his voice as a group of guests passed.

"Jungle Zone work's been underway for weeks," Lucas replied. "Foundations will be finished by January, then Intamin trucks start rolling in with track sections in February. They'll arrive in their standard red and white…" He allowed himself a small grin. "…but by the time we open, they'll blend right into the jungle — deep green track with weathered brown supports."

Walter gave a short, approving nod. "Ambitious. But it'll change the skyline."

"It's the same standard," Lucas said, eyes on the Jungle Zone entrance where the log flume's temple façade glowed in the late sunlight. "Bit by bit, we'll raise the whole park to that level. It's still small, but if we keep building like this, people will start to see it as more than just a quick visit."

A cheer went up near the Wild Mouse as another train rolled into the brake run, and somewhere behind them the carousel's music swelled.

Walter glanced toward the horizon, where the fading sun hinted at evening. "And after tonight… you're not slowing down."

Lucas smiled faintly. "Not even close."

By the time the sun dipped below the horizon, the park had taken on a softer glow. Lanterns lit the pathways, casting warm pools of light across the stone patterns, and the air was filled with the mingled scents of popcorn, sweet waffles, and freshly grilled skewers.

Lucas and Walter stood near the entrance plaza, watching the steady flow of guests toward the central viewing area. The announcement had been clear all week: Stay until closing for a special surprise.

Music began to swell over the park's speakers — a sweeping orchestral score that carried hints of each zone's theme. The crowd murmured with anticipation, children climbing onto their parents' shoulders for a better view.

Then, with a deep thump, the first firework streaked into the night sky. It burst into a cascade of gold, followed by crimson and green blooms that reflected off the carousel's gleaming panels. Cheers erupted, the sound rolling through the park like a wave.

The show built in layers — bursts timed perfectly to the music, sequences of silver comets arching over the log flume's temple façade, and a volley of blue stars that spiraled above the Explorer Zone. The final act was a towering wall of golden willows, raining light over the entire plaza.

As the last shimmering embers faded, applause filled the air. Families began to drift toward the exit, their faces lit with the kind of glow only a perfect day could give.

Walter exhaled, hands in his coat pockets. "Not bad for your first season."

Lucas watched the crowd, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "It's just the beginning

He stepped forward toward the small podium set up near the entrance plaza, where a microphone waited. The background music softened, and the chatter of the crowd gradually faded as people turned toward him.

"Good evening, everyone," he began, his voice carrying easily over the speakers. "Tonight, we close the gates on a season that has been nothing short of incredible. Seven months ago, this park was a dream I'd just inherited — a dream I wasn't sure I could live up to. But thanks to our amazing staff, our dedicated crews, and every single guest who walked through our gates this year… Elysion Park is alive again."

A ripple of applause moved through the crowd. Lucas glanced toward the Jungle Zone, the temple façade glowing in the distance.

"This is just the start. Over the winter, you'll see work begin on new additions — rides, experiences, and details we can't wait to share. By the time we open next spring, Elysion Park will be more immersive, more exciting, and more welcoming than ever before."

He paused, letting the anticipation build. "From the bottom of my heart — thank you for believing in us. For making this first year unforgettable. And for coming with us on the journey ahead."

The crowd erupted in cheers, some guests whistling, others raising their phones to capture the moment. Lucas stepped back, letting the final round of applause wash over the plaza before the closing music swelled once more.
