Chapter 40 - Chapter 40

The pack gathered in their usual playground shrub, shadows thickening as a heavy, oppressive sky loomed overhead. Dark clouds churned like restless spirits, heavy with the promise of rain, while the sharp scent of damp earth mingled with the faint rustle of leaves stirred by a cold, whispering wind. The world felt tense, charged like nature itself was holding its breath before a storm.

"Tyler, how do we unlock the One Mind Wolf?" Henry asked, breaking the silence with a steady voice.

"You heard Mr. Jack you need an emotional trigger," Tyler replied, arms crossed, eyes narrowing in frustration. "Don't ask me."

Sophia's gaze softened as she added, "The One Mind Wolf unlocked when he saw Bella in pain. So that means we have to find something that pushes us beyond our limits for someone we care about."

James stretched, muscles tense and ready. "If unlocking the One Mind Wolf makes us stronger, then of course we have to do it."

Bella's voice was steady, recalling the past. "Constantine was the first to unlock the One Mind Wolf when he fought for his daughter and wife. He nearly had Susun."

Henry's voice sharpened, breaking through the gathering gloom. "We're on patrol tonight, guys. We have to give it everything we've got."

Jasper's tone was hesitant, almost resigned. "I don't think I'll ever unlock the One Mind Wolf." He avoided their eyes, turning his face away.

"Why do you think so?" Bella pressed gently. "Remember, you shifted because I was in troublethat means you have that emotional voice and trigger."

"It's not that," Jasper said quietly. "I'm just not really a warrior like you all. You have what it takes to unlock it, but I won't."

Tyler's voice rose, firm and encouraging. "Come on, Jasper don't say stupid stuff. You have what it takes, just like every one of us. Don't look down on yourself."

It was midnight, and the full moon hung high in the sky a luminous orb casting silver light through the dense canopy, bathing the forest in an eerie glow. The pale moonlight filtered through the skeletal branches, weaving shifting patterns on the forest floor as Tyler and the pack moved silently, their footsteps muted against the blanket of fallen leaves.

They had walked for miles, eyes sharp and senses stretched, scanning the dark woods for any sign of the dreaded vampires lurking in the shadows.

"I can't believe it," Sophia murmured, a hint of amusement threading her voice.

"You mean Park asked Shaun for her hand in marriage?" Bella replied quietly. "That's what I heard, but no confirmation yet."

Henry chuckled softly. "Would be a good thing for them, huh?"

"What? Ain't they like twenty-three or twenty-four?" Jasper scoffed.

Sophia's expression softened as she spoke, "Shaun's parents were killed by vampires when she was eight. She was saved by wolves from the Davidson estate and later joined a pack led by Andy. Park came soon after. They were always bickering until they turned fifteen. That's when they started getting along."

"Good for them," Tyler said, eyes scanning ahead as they pressed onward.

"So what if they get married? Do they leave the pack?" Tyler asked.

"Well, yes," Sophia replied. "Some just want a normal life. But it's their choice."

Suddenly, Bella stiffened. "Hey guys, I'm picking up something... weird."

Tyler's senses snapped to alert. "The air has changed."

Everyone's eyes darted through the thin trees, muscles tensed for what might come.

"Let's move forward," James commanded, voice low and steady.

They advanced cautiously, weaving between the slender trunks, each step measured and silent.

Then a thud.

A heavy impact echoed nearby. The pack froze.

Out of the shadows stepped a figure a vampire.

Tall, muscular, with short auburn hair framing a pale, sharp face. His blazing red eyes pierced the moonlit gloom like burning coals.

Tyler clenched his fists, a cold smile curling his lips. "Looking for me?" the vampire taunted.

"Of course," Tyler replied, voice hard as steel. "People who eat people aren't welcome here. We hate bloodsuckers."

The vampire laughed, low and mocking. "You hate bloodsuckers, huh? Well, I hate dogs."

Sophia's teeth clenched, her voice a low growl. "You're not welcome here."

In a flash, the vampire crouched into an attack stance. Two fiery red orbs ignited in his hands, glowing with deadly fire.

"Let's see who wins," he sneered.

The pack tightened their formation, muscles coiled, ready to shift.
