Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Leonard, You Guessed Correctly

The next morning, Kenley punctually came to the squad office. Due to staying up late last night, today he arrived half an hour late, but the squad's management was extremely lax, and no one cared about this matter at all.

This era without fingerprint card-punching systems is truly blissful.

"Documents sent over by the police station - the entire Gear Gang was caught in one sweep by the police station's raid operation." Rosanne walked in, placing a document on the table. "Boss Biller Matt and his subordinates were arrested on the spot with solid evidence. The day after tomorrow, that villain will be sent to the gallows."

"I remember the police station has been tracking this guy for nearly half a year, but never had solid evidence. Such quick conviction?" Leonard put down the poetry collection in his hands, eyebrows slightly raised.

"Speaking of which, it's interesting. At midnight, someone threw a stone and a notebook containing evidence of Biller's human trafficking directly through the police station window. The on-duty officer Heywood Matthew chased out but didn't find a single person, but when he discovered the contents recorded in the notebook, he called all his colleagues to rush onto carriages. In just forty minutes, they caught all Gear Gang members red-handed at the 'Midnight Bolt' tavern." Rosanne smiled. "They really should thank this enthusiastic citizen."

"Tingen City has produced a 'vigilante'." Leonard reached for the report, carefully looked through it, then handed it back to Rosanne. "No content related to Beyonders - file according to usual procedure."

"Alright." Rosanne took the report and walked out.

"Regarding these 'vigilantes', what do we generally do?" Kenley asked somewhat guiltily.

"Someone helping us govern Tingen City's underground - we're grateful before it's too late. How could we take any action?" Leonard's gaze shifted from the poetry collection in his hands to Kenley sitting across from him. "Don't tell me you're that lovely 'vigilante'."

Although knowing Leonard was joking, Kenleyheart still fluttered with a trace of panic. A calm feeling surged from his heart, quickly filling his limbs, making his hand reaching for the coffee cup become steady.

This is the necessary path for me to digest the potion, and I also helped Tingen City deal with a huge tumor - what wrong did I do?

I also can't rely on stealing squad members' money pouches every day to digest the potion.

"I hope so." Kenley smiled. "Being able to help Tingen City residents is a tremendous honor."

He felt that the "Thief" potion in his body loosened slightly after Rosanne said those words.

After dinner as usual, he returned home, first neatly hanging up his coat, then took a shower. Wearing his shirt, he drew the curtains, took out a black bag from under the bed, and poured it onto the bed. Quarter-pennies, half-pennies, one-penny coins mixed with five-pound and one-pound banknotes bearing George III and George II portraits scattered on the bed. The beautiful sound of coin collisions mixed with the fragrance of banknotes filled the entire room.

Ha! I've struck it rich!

Kenley excitedly counted them up. All told, last night's harvest totaled four hundred seventy-two pounds, four soli, seventeen and three-quarter pennies - this should be at least two to three months' income for the "Midnight Bolt" tavern.

Indeed, robbery is momentarily refreshing, constant robbery is constantly refreshing!

He carefully divided the money into two parts, placing four hundred sixty pounds in the drawer, the remaining money in his money pouch.

He needed to open an account at Backlund Bank.

This money was enough for him to spend for a while, then slowly seek the next blind prey.

The next morning, Kenley came to the office as usual, handing those completed Hermes language documents to Old Neil, who looked at Kenley with slight surprise.

"How is your grasp of Hermes language coming along?" Old Neil suddenly asked in Hermes language.

"Pronunciation has been mastered, but conversation still needs strengthening." Kenley likewise answered in Hermes language.

"Very good. Do you need to start learning charm-making?" Old Neil looked at him approvingly.

"No, I think before becoming proficient in one thing, it's better not to be distracted learning other subjects." Kenley said. "If there's nothing this afternoon, I'd like to leave an hour early to go to the library to borrow some Hermes language books."

Old Neil nodded, took a slip of paper from the desk, wrote several book titles with an ink pen, blew the ink dry and handed it to Kenley. "These books are suitable for your current reading level, but I don't recommend wasting time at the public library. Hoy University's library can lend all the books on this list - their history department's document collection is second only to Backlund University and the Court Library."

Kenley looked at the book titles: "The Evolution History of Hermes Language," "Mastering Advanced Hermes Language," "Related Records of Third and Fourth Epoch Hermes Language."

"Is their library open to the public?"

"Their library is open twenty-four hours, though not to the public, but your trainee inspector certificate can be used as a special library card. You just need to tell the librarian there that these books are related to some cases you're handling." Old Neil smiled. "Be flexible in using the various resources at your disposal."

"In this regard, you are absolutely an expert." Kenley said admiringly.

Old Neil smiled until his eyes crinkled. "Have a cup of coffee before leaving?"

"Thank you very much, but recently I've consumed too much caffeine, and..." Kenley spread his hands. "Can't always mooch your and Royale's coffee - it's time to prepare some suitable coffee powder for myself."

When the previous host was a civilian employee, he always used insufficient salary as an excuse to mooch Old Neil's coffee powder and the squad's black tea. Now that he had some savings, it was time to repay this favor.

"Feysac's Downing black tea has a hint of lemon fragrance - it's my favorite flavor. As for coffee beans, you know what brand I like to drink." Old Neil said slyly.

"I guarantee that next time I come to work, these two delicious beverages will be on your desk." Kenley raised his right hand.

After work, Kenley took a public carriage to Tingen University. A tributary of the Hoy River happened to flow through the middle of the university. The river flowed slowly, and everywhere you could see male and female students holding books, reading by the trees and on the lawns under the setting sun. Here, whether attending classes or simply strolling along the riverbank, would be an ultimate enjoyment.

Youth is wonderful.

"Hello, I'd like to borrow these books." Kenley came to the library, handing Old Neil's note to the front desk librarian.

She looked through the catalog and raised her head. "Yes, we have all these books. Please show your student ID. The last two books each have one copy remaining, only for borrowing by history and linguistics department students."

"No, he's not a history department student, otherwise I would definitely remember his face." A hearty voice appeared from the side. It was a middle-aged man of medium build with bronze-colored skin. He had no beard, wore a top hat, had black hair and brown eyes, gentle features, and eyes that revealed an indescribable vicissitude. Below his right ear was a black mole visible only upon close inspection.

The bronze nameplate on his chest clearly read: "Azik Eggers, Hoy University History Department Faculty."

The big shot of Tingen City whom one shouldn't provoke has appeared beside me - please accept my knees.
