Chapter 13: The Hawkins Lab and the Bigger Picture
The abandoned Hawkins National Laboratory, a monolithic, brutalist structure of gray concrete and steel, stood as a silent, imposing testament to the town's darkest secrets. Its windows, dark and vacant, stared out like dead eyes, its barbed-wire fences a physical and psychological barrier against the outside world. To the untrained eye, it was just another defunct government facility, a relic of a bygone era. But to Adam, with his privileged, terrifying foreknowledge, it was the epicenter of the madness. It was the source of the Demogorgons, the portal to the Upside Down, and the birthplace of the cosmic horror that now threatened to swallow their world whole. It was where he needed to go. The information they needed, the answers they were desperately seeking, were all locked away within those cold, sterile walls.
"I feel like I should be wearing a ski mask and a grappling hook. I'm a thief now. A secret agent. A spy. I'm going to break into a super-secret government lab. I really hope there aren't any lasers. Or dogs. Or, you know, any other monsters. Because a Demodog slug is one thing. A full-grown Demogorgon? That's a whole other beast. A beast I would very much like to avoid. Maybe I'll just use a fire extinguisher on it. You know, for old time's sake."
His plan was audacious, reckless, and absolutely necessary. He couldn't go in with Dustin and Max. Their presence would be a liability, a risk he wasn't willing to take. He had to go in alone. He was a survivor. He was a manipulator. He was a master of deception. He could get in. He could get the information. He just had to be smart. And, for the first time, he was glad he possessed the memories of an 18-year-old. The social engineering he was about to perform, the casual deception he was about to perpetrate, was something a 14-year-old just couldn't pull off.
He drove to the lab in his new car, a slightly used but reliable Ford Pinto he had bought with his trust fund. He had even managed to get a fake ID, a surprisingly easy feat for someone with his resources and his proclivity for subtle manipulation. He parked a few blocks away, and walked the rest of the way, his heart hammering in his chest, a frantic drumbeat of anticipation and terror. He approached the main gate, a large, imposing steel thing that was surprisingly open, a relic of the lab's supposed abandonment. A single, aging security guard, his face a roadmap of wrinkles, sat in a small booth, his eyes half-closed as he dozed, a tattered magazine resting on his lap.
Adam approached the booth with a carefully constructed casualness, a nonchalant demeanor that hid the frantic chaos in his mind. He was just a curious kid. A nerdy, wide-eyed teenager who was interested in the town's history. He was a character in a play, and he was about to deliver his opening monologue. He offered the guard a warm, genuine smile.
"Excuse me, sir," he said, his voice a little shy, a little hesitant, a perfect blend of innocence and curiosity. "I was just wondering if you could help me out. My history teacher gave us this huge project on Hawkins, and I have to write about the lab. I was just wondering if you had any old records, or maybe a photo, or something. Just for the project. It's for a grade." He held up a clipboard with a bunch of fake notes, a prop he had carefully crafted for the occasion.
The guard, roused from his slumber, blinked at him, his face a mask of confusion. He was about to tell him to buzz off, to go home, to stop bothering him. Adam, with his usual intuitive understanding of human nature, saw the words forming on his lips. He knew he had to act quickly, to disarm the man, to break through his defenses. He had to make the man trust him. He had to make the man talk. He needed information, and the guard, a human key to the lab's secrets, was his only way in.
"Memory. That's what I need. I need to make him remember something. Something good. Something that will make him trust me. Something that will make him open up. This isn't a manipulation, not in the traditional sense. It's a gentle push. A nudge in the right direction. A friendly conversation. With a little bit of supernatural mind-warping on the side. What could go wrong?"
He focused on the idea of a shared past, of a sense of camaraderie, of a deep-seated nostalgia for a simpler time. He focused on the idea of the guard being a kind, benevolent man who loved to help kids with their homework. He focused on the idea of the guard remembering a time when the lab was filled with hope and scientific curiosity, not with monsters and secrets.

He felt the pheromone's power thrumming beneath his skin, a gentle, hypnotic current that radiated outwards, a warm, fuzzy feeling that enveloped the guard in a cocoon of nostalgia. He saw it in the guard's eyes. A flicker of something, a distant memory, a smile. The man's face, once a mask of sleepy boredom, now softened, a wistful look coming into his eyes. "A history project, you say?" he said, his voice a little more open, a little more friendly. "I remember those. My son used to have a hard time with them. I always used to help him. Good kid. Used to love to hear my stories about this place. The good old days, before... well, you know. Before everything went south."
Adam, sensing the opening, pushed a little further. "I heard a rumor that they had this secret project here. Something to do with... well, with pheromones. My teacher said it was just a rumor, but I thought it would be cool to find out if it was true. You know, for the project. Did you ever hear anything about that?"
The guard's eyes, wide with a new-found nostalgia, now held a deep, unshakeable trust. "Project Pheromone?" he said, his voice a low, conspiratorial whisper. "Yeah, I remember that. A bunch of crazy scientists, locked away in the sub-basement. Always doing experiments. A bunch of weirdos, if you ask me. They had a whole file on it, in the old records room. But that's all locked up now. All the records were supposed to be destroyed, but I think a few of them were just... forgotten about. I'll tell you what. If you promise not to tell anyone, I'll tell you where to find the old records room. But you have to promise to be careful. It's a dangerous place, that lab."
Adam, with a profound, almost terrifying sense of triumph, promised. He had done it. He had gotten the information. He had used his power, not for blackmail, not for coercion, but for a subtle, almost gentle form of deception. He had earned the guard's trust, and in doing so, he had unlocked a new, terrifying power.
[PHEROMONE: MEMORY UNLOCKED!][MISSION OBJECTIVE COMPLETED: EXTRACT VITAL INFORMATION WITHOUT SUSPICION.][NEW MISSION: INVESTIGATE PROJECT PHEROMONE][STATUS: ACTIVE][NEW ABILITY: PASSIVE AURA OF NOSTALGIA. ADAM'S NATURAL PRESENCE WILL INSTILL A SENSE OF WISTFUL REMINISCENCE IN THOSE AROUND HIM.]
He thanked the guard, his voice filled with a genuine gratitude he hadn't expected to feel. He had broken into the lab. He had gotten the information. He was a survivor. A manipulator. A hero. And he was about to uncover the biggest secret of them all. The truth about the lab, the truth about the monsters, the truth about the System. He was about to find out exactly why he was here.
