Chapter 10 - CH 9: No Rest for the Hunted

Kyle didn't lower his guard. His hands twitched, blood bubbling just beneath his skin, ready to form a weapon at the slightest threat.

Gia was still weak, barely staying upright, but Kyle could feel her tense behind him. If she had the strength, she'd be standing beside him, ready to fight.

The man—Felix—watched them with amusement, golden eyes gleaming like a predator toying with its prey.

Kyle scowled. "Start talking, or I start cutting."

Felix grinned. "Bold. I like that." He tilted his head. "But if I wanted you dead, I wouldn't have let you land here."

Kyle didn't ease up. "And why is that?"

Felix sighed, stepping further into the dim light. His trench coat swayed with his movements, revealing a silver emblem on his belt—an unfamiliar crest, sharp and intricate.

"Because," Felix said, "you're not the only ones running from The Order."

Secrets and Lies

Kyle frowned. "Explain."

Felix smirked. "Ever heard of the Forsaken?"

Kyle glanced at Gia. She looked just as confused as him. "No."

Felix chuckled. "Figures. The Order likes to erase its mistakes."

Kyle narrowed his eyes. "You're saying you're one of them?"

Felix gave a mocking bow. "One of their first, actually. Before they got real good at their little 'enhancements.'" He straightened. "They called us failed experiments. But we survived. And now? We make sure bastards like them don't get their way."

Kyle processed the information, his blood still thrumming with tension. If Felix was telling the truth, it meant he wasn't the only one who had been used and discarded by The Order.

Still… trusting him? That was a different thing entirely.

"You could be lying," Kyle said flatly.

Felix grinned. "I could. But you don't have much of a choice, do you?"

Kyle clenched his jaw. He hated that Felix was right.

Gia suddenly stirred beside him. "Kyle…"

Her voice was weak, but urgent.

Kyle immediately turned to her. Her skin was even paler than before, and her breathing was uneven.

Shit.

Felix tsked. "Yeah, she's not looking too hot."

Kyle glared at him. "You got a place she can rest?"

Felix shrugged. "Of course. I'm not a monster."

Kyle raised a brow. "Debatable."

Felix laughed. "Fair."

Sanctuary?

Felix led them deeper into the cathedral. The walls were lined with old wooden pews, dust-covered chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.

At the back, there was a hidden passage, revealed by pushing aside a massive, rotting bookshelf.

Inside, the air was warmer. A long underground corridor stretched into dimly lit rooms, flickering lanterns casting eerie shadows.

Felix gestured to one of the rooms. "She can rest here."

Kyle helped Gia inside, lowering her onto a worn-out mattress. She exhaled softly, eyelids fluttering.

Kyle sat beside her, gripping her hand. "Hey. You with me?"

Gia gave him a weak smile. "Yeah… just really tired."

Kyle's chest tightened. He hated seeing her like this. All because of The Order.

Felix leaned against the doorway. "She'll be fine. But she'll need time to recover."

Kyle didn't look at him. "How long?"

Felix shrugged. "A day, maybe more. Depends on how much that mark is messing with her."

Kyle exhaled sharply. "Damn it."

Felix crossed his arms. "While she rests, we need to talk."

Kyle finally looked up, eyes sharp. "About what?"

Felix's golden eyes gleamed.

"About how to bring down The Order."
