(Samuel's POV)
I was walking for around two hours in the dark, hoping I was going in the right direction. I had followed the path back and reached a crossroads as the sun fully set, the moonlight shining upon the eerie land. That crossroads luckily had a cardinal sign that showed where East was and I decided to walk straight east.
After walking even more, somehow avoiding anything else, I was able to see a town in the distance, lights were on some lampposts, which I could see from nearly a hundred yards away.
My legs were a bit sore, and my throat was dry from all that walking. I just wanted to drink something that could quench my thirst.
As I walked closer, I noticed that the town was a fair size, with several brick and wooden buildings. The road that ran down the middle was neatly cleaned and well paved. I saw a sign next to what I assume was the entrance.
It read;
"Prospector's Downs"
Prospector, huh?
It must be a mining town. I would assume there is a mine nearby, but it's too dark to even see around so I would not be able to confirm or deny it.
I walked down the main road and looked around, seeing that most buildings were already closed. I didn't know what time it would be now but since it's dark, most of the locals must be settling down for the night.
"Hm...." I said as I gulped and licked my lips, "....fucking thirsty....."
As I walked, I saw a large building in the corner of the street, seeing it had a sign.
"Mick's Saloon"
The door was opened, and I heard several voices inside, so I assume they were still open. I noticed that it was a two-story building and some of the windows of the second story had curtains but there was light shining through.
I walked up the steps and noticed something unusual.
"What?" I blinked as I looked at the lantern that was connected on the side of the door, ".....huh?"
It looked like the usual one with glass and all, but there was a strange blue orb right on top of it, which had a glowing rune on it. And the more I focused on it, the more clearly I could hear a faint hum from it.
"....magic....." I muttered to myself, "Interesting....."
I looked around as I was on the steps, seeing that most lampposts on the streets were similar; they had a blue stone on top with a glowing rune on it.
This must be some sort of way to introduce electricity or something similar to it. It is quite an interesting way of doing things. I did see that there were no usual electrical wires running through the place, so I assume this is how they have light.
"Hm...." I said as I shrugged and walked inside
The moment I did so, the floorboards creaked, and I noticed that everyone stopped what they were doing and looked up from their seats to see me. The room was quite large, with circular tables arranged throughout. Some of the tables had people sitting on them, with mugs of drink in front of them.
All of them were giving serious stares, their eyes were piercing me as I stood there. There were a few rough-looking men who had pistols holstered at their sides. There was a single waitress, holding the platter in her hand as she looked at me with a confused look. It was quite obvious that they didn't recognize me so they were trying to process what to make of me.
I blinked, saying nothing as I looked over at the bar counter, where a middle-aged man had a rag in his hand.
I made my way towards the counter, "H-Hello...." I said, my voice a bit coarse, "Sorry to bother you...."
He began to wipe the counter with the rag, "No worries." he said, his voice deep but calm, "But a little heads up; we close up in an hour and a half."
I nodded as I sat down on the stool, "D-Do you have anything to drink?" I asked, "Water? Anything? I've been walking a long way....."
He looked at me with raised eyebrow, "Water?" He asked me, "You're parched, I take it..."
I nodded, "Yes." I said, "I've....I got in an accident not too far from here....and I had to walk all the way here...."
"From where?" He stopped wiping
I don't know what the hell that path was called, the one that lead to that one place.
"The path that led to the passageway." I said with a gulp, my throat was very dry
He sighed, "I see...." He said, "You didn't even make it to the passage. Did you encounter a Terror Bird?"
I nodded, "Yes."
"You got quite lucky if you walked all the way over here." He said seriously, "There's a few times a month where the Birds move into the mountains and mate, so they don't roam the plains in the night as they do."
"T-That's good...." I said, "Do you have water?"
"I might." He said, "You got coin?"
I blinked, "I...." I said, "Well....."
"You look hungry too." He said, "I can give you a nice cold jug of water with some stew from this afternoon. All for just three gold coins."
"No..." I said as I set the sack down next to me, "I don't have gold....but I have something.....I don't know if it's worth anything."
I pulled out the small blue crystal egg that was the size of my hand.
I placed it on the counter and the moment he saw it, he widened his eyes.
"What the fuck?!" I heard someone behind me say
In a swift motion, the bartender stepped back, drawing a double-barreled shotgun from under the counter and pointed it at me. Not just that, I heard several men stand up and draw their weapons and I didn't need to look to know that they were aiming at me.
I stood up and raised my arms, "Whoa!" I said, "W-What's the problem?!"
The Bartender was giving me a serious glare, "Where did you get that?" He said, "That's a Crystal Egg there, son."
If I remembered correctly, that's what Terry said when we were in the carriage. What the hell was that supposed to mean to me? I mean, I knew it was made out of some sort of valuable crystal but what the fuck is it?
"Wait....wait...." I said, "I....I...."
He pulled the hammer of the shotgun, "Don't lie to me now." He said, "Do you have any idea what that is?"
"No." I blurted out, "I really don't."
"Oh, you don't?" He asked
"Listen." I said, trying to calm down, "I don't know how I even got here.....I..."
"Yea, I can tell." He said seriously, "You dont' look like you're from Rubrein. You look like you're from Drahan but you don't dress like it. What is your story, stranger?"
"I....I don't remember shit." I said, "I swear. I just woke up in the back of a carriage, tied up by three men. We were being chased by a Terror Bird. It toppled the carriage over the ravine and the others died in the fall. I found the egg in the sack, I have no idea what it is or what it's worth."
"Tch...." He said
"Mick, dammit..." one of the man said, "That Egg is bad news. We should hand him over to the Sheriff."
"Hm...." Mick, the Bartender said, "Son, do you truly not know what it is?"
I shook my head, "I swear it." I said, "I don't know what it is."
"That is a Crystal Egg. It is from a clutch of 10 Eggs, classified as a Mythical Relic. Only Three Eggs exist in Rubrein." He said, "You truly aren't from here if you don't know that much. And one egg, which I assume is this one, belongs to a very dangerous individual. If she finds out it is here, then all hell will break loose and nothing but ruin will be brought to Prospector's Downs...."
"I don't know who you're talking about. But I can tell you that the three men who had me said that they stole it." I said, "I have no reason to lie. I am not here for trouble."
"Let him be, Mick." I heard a voice say, "I'll take the Egg off his hands. Give him some water and food, I'll pay for it."
I looked over to see a woman standing at the top of the stairs, leaning on the rails with a slight smile on her face. She had black hair, green eyes, and a very voluptuous body. She was wearing a black dress, and the way she leaned on the railings clearly displayed her very attractive cleavage.
"Marissa..." Mick said, "Are you serious?"
The woman began to walk down the stairs, "Don't worry." She said with a chuckle, "That Woman, the one you're so afraid of....I am friends with her, remember? I can give her the Egg myself and nothing will happen."
Mick lowered the shotgun, "You don't know that."
As he did this, the other men lowered their weapons from the sound of it. Seems they knew that everything was alright, but I could still feel the tension in the air.
"Relax." The woman walked over to the counter and leaned on it as she looked at me, "And this one? Who is this stranger?"
She gave me a slight smile, some sort of glint in her eyes.
I grabbed the egg and kept it in my hand, "Name's Samuel." I said seriously, feeling a bit more at ease now, "And you?"
She chuckled, "Samuel, huh?" She said, "I am Marissa, I am an....entertainer here...."
"Oh." I said, "That's nice."
I then saw the System Screen appear in the middle of the air, showing me a message.
