Chapter 79 - Cynthia vs. Lance

Chapter 79: Cynthia vs. Lance

Although Lu Ye always joked about Lance being a "Dodrio," his strength as a long-standing Champion was undeniable. In last year's World Master Championship, Lance came in second, narrowly losing to Leon's Gigantamax Charizard. Cynthia ranked third, but the gap between them was minimal—the outcome depended heavily on their performance that day.

Cheers surged like tidal waves from all directions. Experiencing this top-tier battle live, even Lu Ye couldn't help but feel his blood boil with excitement.

"Gengarr!" Haunter cupped its claws around its mouth like a megaphone, cheering loudly for Cynthia.

Eevee gazed at the battlefield, its dark eyes gradually lighting up with excitement.

"Watch closely. This match is going to be brutal!" Lu Ye clicked his tongue deliberately.

If he could scare these two into backing off, bringing them to the match would be totally worth it!

"Gengarr!"

"Bui!"

Eevee and Haunter nodded seriously.

"The competitors are in position!" the announcer roared. "Who will come out on top? Let's find out!"

Dressed in a light blue bodysuit, her blue high ponytail swaying, Clair frowned slightly, sneaking a glance to the side.

Who was he…? Invited by Cynthia?

She had never heard of Cynthia inviting a man to watch a match in person! In the past, the only person invited was her close friend, Diantha. How could there be someone else?

Unable to figure it out, Clair shook her head, casting a complicated look at Lance. As a descendant of the Dragon Clan, Clair and Lance were both considered exceptionally gifted. Yet her brilliance was always overshadowed by Lance's talent.

Looking at this man, who was always ahead of her, with his sense of justice and passion, Clair sighed silently.

"I hope… he really wins this match."

The cheers grew louder. With the referee's whistle, two Poké Balls were hurled into the arena.

A burst of red light flashed, and the ground rumbled. A red Gyarados, covered in crimson scales, let out a deafening roar, standing menacingly upright.

"ROOOAR!!"

"Lance has sent out his red Gyarados!"

This Gyarados, normally 6.5 meters long, easily exceeded 8 meters—its presence was overwhelming. The Intimidate ability quieted the arena momentarily, before the crowd erupted into cheers.

In front of this massive beast, the golden-haired beauty seemed so small. But a confident smile appeared at the corner of Cynthia's lips, as if she had expected this.

The announcer shouted, "Cynthia sends out the Serene Grace Pokémon, Togekiss!"

Togekiss glided gracefully, spreading its triangular wings, quickly taking an advantageous position in the air.

In the guest section, Lu Ye opened the system Pokédex and teased the two Pokémon. "Scared?"

Haunter and Eevee didn't respond, simply staring blankly at the battlefield.

Lu Ye nodded in satisfaction.

Look at them—so scared they can't even speak!

The Pokédex entries filled with dense move lists made Lu Ye's scalp tingle, but it also proved the power of these two Pokémon.

"Red Gyarados, Dragon Dance setup, likely holding a Mega Stone…" Lu Ye murmured. "Togekiss isn't affected much by Intimidate and can counter the Dark-typed Mega Gyarados."

"Cynthia really is on another level!"

"It all depends on whether Lance will force a Dragon Dance…"

Clair's brow twitched, and she couldn't help but reply in Chinese, "Lance's trump card should be Dragonite!"

Lu Ye gave her a surprised look, then nodded.

"Dragonite is strong, but its speed is a weakness, and it's less efficient than a Dragon Dance-boosted Gyarados."

"Lance's strategy for this match must be Dragon Dance!" Lu Ye declared.

Clair opened her mouth to argue but didn't know how. Frustrated, she snapped her whip with a sharp crack.

Lu Ye's brow twitched, and he coughed, focusing back on the battlefield.

Togekiss vs. Gyarados.

Lu Ye began running through possible scenarios in his mind. Though his experience came mostly from virtual games, Cynthia's choice in this situation was clear.

"Thunder Wave!" Lu Ye and Cynthia said in unison.

Paralyze the Gyarados first!

Clair gave Lu Ye a strange look.

But what made her scalp tingle was that when she looked back at the battlefield, Cynthia had given the exact same command!

He predicted Cynthia's strategy?!

On the other side, Lance called out sternly, "Gyarados, Dragon Dance!"

"ROOOAR!!"

Gyarados roared to the sky, its power and speed surging, shattering a stone pillar on the rocky battlefield with ease. With such a large target, Thunder Wave was almost guaranteed to hit.

But Gyarados slammed its tail into the ground, sending debris flying, deflecting the weak electric pulse!

"Thunder Wave is weak to avoid detection," Clair explained smugly, "but that gave Lance a chance to use the terrain!"

Although Lu Ye predicted Lance's strategy, Clair's quick explanation helped even the score.

Lu Ye rolled his eyes.

Are these two cheering squads seriously competing with each other?

This girl… could she be a total bro-con?

"But…" Lu Ye glanced at Togekiss and murmured, "I think I know how she's going to play this."

Thunder Wave failed, and the Dragon Dance-boosted Gyarados, with its crimson eyes, looked like a god of slaughter.

At that moment, brilliant light shone from Gyarados's forehead. Lance closed his eyes, flaring his cape as he clenched his fist in the air. A wave of rainbow light burst from the Key Stone on his wrist. He opened his eyes, sharp and focused.

"Gyarados, Mega Evolve!"

The crowd gasped in shock.

The Mega Evolved Gyarados, covered in razor-sharp scales and wing-like fins, drew cries of awe from everyone!

Facing this beast, Cynthia smirked. Brushing her bangs aside, her aura shifted, and her eyes sharpened like blades.

"Togekiss, dodge Ice Fang and use Sweet Kiss!"

Togekiss held the aerial advantage. But Mega Gyarados could glide, too. Jets of water propelled Gyarados into the air, its frost-covered fangs snapping toward Togekiss!

Crack!

Togekiss nimbly dodged and blew a sweet kiss. Gyarados suddenly looked dazed and crashed into a sharp rock pillar.

Boom!!

Gyarados slammed down, a deep gash slicing across its body.

"Gyarados is confused and hurt itself!" the announcer shouted.

"Dazzling Gleam!" Cynthia commanded.

Blinding light engulfed the arena. Fairy-type power slammed into Mega Gyarados, making it roar in fury. Mist-like blood surged from its body as it snapped out of confusion.

"Gyarados, Ice Fang!"

With a leap, Gyarados's icy fangs sank into Togekiss, sending it crashing down!

Thud!

Togekiss hit the ground, but Gyarados's eyes drooped sleepily.

"That's Togekiss's Yawn!" the announcer exclaimed.

Lance frowned. "Waterfall!"

A jet of water blasted Togekiss into the protective barrier.

"Togekiss is unable to battle!"

At the same time, Gyarados swayed and fell asleep on the spot.
