Chapter 13 - Following the trail

Eli sat on the bed shortly after Oboros had left. For the life of him he could not seem to remember anything about the feline girl. "Don't think too hard buddy, you might overload that pea-sized brain of yours," the other him poked Eli's head.

Choosing to ignore him, Eli lay down onto his back, pondering what Oboros had stated earlier.

Suddenly, Eli could sense a small amount of ominous energy in the air. No, he couldn't just feel it, he could literally see a black line of energy coming through the window above his head.

Was it coming towards him? The dark energy surged downward and towards his chest connecting him to it. A small amount of energy began to dwell inside him, making him sit up. It was as if he was absorbing this trail of dark energy.

Whispers began to fill his head as it continued, and his mood started to shift to slight annoyance.

"Huh, that's new," Other Eli commented as he inspected the line of energy. "Maybe it's got something to do with you using that strange power of yours?" Eli #2 shrugged.

"Where's this coming from?" Eli said more to himself than his other self.

"Why don't you follow it?" He suggested.

The sun was starting to set as dusk began approaching quickly. Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to follow it.

Thinking for a moment, he decided he would try to find the start of the trail. Still shirtless, Eli quickly searched the room for a shirt, ultimately finding a short-sleeved top that was just a little baggy on him. He glanced down at an extra eyepatch by the bed, ultimately choosing not to put it on.

He was on the second story of the large building, but luckily for him even if he got hurt jumping from the window, he could easily heal himself. Eli didn't want to run the risk of running into Oboros, Lori, the feline girl, or that large man. He was sure they would ask questions if they saw him out on the grounds.

He needed to just jump down and quickly make his way over the wall and into the city streets.

Opening his window, Eli jumped down, rolling as he landed. Once on the ground, he sprinted through the grounds of the estate and easily jumped the three-meter-tall wall surrounding the area.

Getting more than a few odd looks once he landed onto the street opposite of where he came, Eli slowed down to a brisk walk.

As the light from the sun faded, so did the amount of people on the streets, though it wasn't completely deserted. There seemed to be a rather large amound of guards patrolling the city.

As Eli continued to follow the trail of energy, he could feel the intensity of it growing.

Eli eventually found himself in a still bustling part of the city. The light from the sun was now gone, being replaced by the moons white light.

Drunkards, miscreants, adventurers, guards, and even prostitutes were now out and about at this time. Patrons went in and out of Taverns while nearby merchants sold sizzling meat and a variety of veggies and potatoes.

Eli's stomach growled as the wonderfully smelling dishes filled his nostrils, but he had not thought to bring anything other than the clothes on his back. 'Damn, I should've brought a weapon,' Eli thought as he continued to watch the city folk pass by him.

Soon the line curved, leading down into the earth in front of a stone building, which currently held a few dozen or so customers eating at the restaurant within. It wasn't anything too fancy from what Eli could see.

Not wanting to barge directly inside of the establishment, Eli circled the buildings and into the alleyway, hoping to find if there was another entrance leading downwards. As he circled the building, the opposite end of the line stayed anchored to the same spot.

To his dismay, Eli didn't find any cellar doors in the rear of the building, but he did find one leading to the ground floor.

Eli turned the knob slowly, surprised to find it unlocked. Opening the door carefully, Eli's left eye peeked through the crack revealing a hallway.

Workers and chefs ran through the hallway from door to door, each bringing various kinds of foods in varying states of readiness on plates, in bags, and on platters.

Eli studied the scene, carefully looking for anything amiss. As he continued to watch, he soon noticed a man emerge from one of the doors that he had noticed no one go in and out of.

Something seemed off about him as the frail man closed the door behind him, taking a key from his pocket and locking the door. Putting it back into his pocket, the man took off down the hallway and into another doorway.

Deciding it was worth investigating, Eli swiftly made his way into the hallway and to the locked door nearby.

Grabbing the handle, Eli pulled and pushed at the door, seeing if he could quietly force it open at all. Unsurprisingly it didn't budge an inch. "Excuse me sir, are you lost?" A woman's voice asked from his left side.

Turning slightly, he could see the slender woman next to him from the corner of his left eye. "Oh, uh yes," Eli laughed awkwardly, "I was trying to find the restroom, but I can't seem to find it."

Eli fully turned his head after he spoke, his right eye now finally resting on the woman. When he had first seen her, she seemed completely normal. The instant his right eye landed on her however, her eyes went from blue to pitch black, as if a veil had been lifted.

The womans smile dropped as a look of surprise painted her face.

Eli stared the woman down with a blank expression. It wasn't Andras, but another one of them. Eli's eye flicked to the passing by workers, over half of them with eyes similar to the womans own. How many total? Did those without those around not realize that these things were here?

Speaking of which, the thing before him had acted perfectly normal. Hiding its true nature and pretending to be normal. Acting as if it wasn't some vile thing. Of course, Eli's interactions with these beings were in a place where they were able to be themselves. It wasn't a surprise that they'd try to blend in, but it was surprising for Eli to see first-hand.

Before Eli could say or do anything, the woman reacted first, bowing quickly and saying, "Forgive me sir. I thought you were one of the inhabitants of the land."

She no longer spoke the demonic language of this place but instead spoke in a language not used by any inhabitants of this world. Eli had picked up on a lot of it during his time in the pit, enough so that was all he could speak until Aeros and the others had found and taught him the demonic language.

The line still connected to Eli's chest seemed to be invisible to the woman as she continued her bow. Eli wanted to do something. His mind and emotions screamed at him to kill this woman and everyone like her in this place.

"Not a bad idea," Other Eli hummed beside him, "Buuut then again, she's not attacking you. She seems to think you're some big shot cause of your eye. She seems to be pretty low in their ranks, considering she doesn't know who you are."

Eli considered his words, on one hand he felt as if with this strange power he'd have a fair shot at clearing their kind out of this building, probably also causing panic to the customers and workers not associated with them.

Or he could play along and see if he could get some information on not only those in the building, but maybe other places these things could be hiding.

Taking a moment to try to restrain himself, Eli replied coldly in perfect English, "Don't let it happen again."
