Chapter 6 - Torn In Two

Time seemed to blur around them, minutes slipping by unnoticed as they lost themselves in the raw intensity of pleasure.

Devon's breath hitched as a deep, guttural groan escaped his lips. His body trembled, muscles taut, and with one final thrust, he spilled himself inside her, riding the waves of release until the last shudder left him breathless.

He lingered there for a moment, hovering over her sweat-slicked body, before finally pulling away. Sophie lay still beneath him, skin flushed, her chest rising and falling in quick, shallow breaths. Trails of his release clung to her thighs and stomach, a silent testament to what they had done.

He rose and began to dress, his gaze occasionally flicking back to her with an air of satisfaction, his expression calm, almost smug.

The silence between them was thick, heavy with everything unsaid.

Meanwhile, Sophie stared at the ceiling as if it might offer some kind of answer, anything to make sense of the chaos in her mind. A storm of emotions twisted inside her: disbelief, shame, confusion… and something darker.

She was a wife. A mother. And now, she was an adulteress.

Her stomach churned as the reality of it all closed in on her like a vice.

"Sophie…"

The sound of her name in his voice made her flinch.

With Dr. Devon, of all people. The man revered as a genius in his field, respected by peers across the globe. The man who had just taken her, stripped her bare body and dignity and used her for his own pleasure.

"Sophie…"

He said her name again, softer this time, his hand brushing along her arm. The touch was light, almost tender but it burned. She snapped out of her daze and turned to him, eyes blazing with fury.

The admiration she once held for him had evaporated, replaced by something cold and venomous.

Devon met her glare with a smirk, completely unbothered. "You should get going," he said, sliding on his watch. "I have work in ten minutes."

Sophie didn't move. Not at first.

Her fingers gripped the edge of the leather couch, digging into it as if anchoring herself to reality. Her chest rose and fell unevenly, and the silence that followed Devon's words rang louder than anything he'd said.

She finally stood, movements slow and mechanical, her lips pressing together, blinking back tears she couldn't afford to shed here. Reaching for her clothes felt like reaching for someone else's life, one that no longer fit her. Each article was a reminder of the woman she was before this moment. And now, she wasn't sure who she had become.

She caught her reflection in the mirror across the room. Her blouse hung open, mascara slightly smudged beneath her eyes. Her lips, swollen from his kisses, trembled. Shame crept in like a slow-burning fire, licking at the edges of her heart.

"I'll make sure the world knows what kind of monster you really are," she said, her voice shaking with fury as she glared at him.

Behind her, Devon leaned casually against the doorframe, his shirt crisp and neatly buttoned. He said nothing at first, arms crossed, eyes dark with a shadow she hadn't seen before something cold and calculating.

When he finally spoke, his voice was quiet, almost casual, but each word dripped with venom.

"And who do you think they'll believe?" he said, stepping forward, his smile thin and cruel. "You? A secretary desperate for recognition? Or me?"

His fingers brushed the edge of her blouse as she tried to straighten it, a mocking gesture that made her skin crawl.

"Besides," he continued, voice dropping to a near whisper, "you enjoyed every second of it. Your body told me everything I needed to know."

Her chest tightened painfully, and fresh tears threatened to fall. She wiped them away roughly, refusing to show weakness.

"Enjoy?" she repeated, her voice brittle. "I'm married. All I feel is regret."

Devon chuckled, a sound so hollow it made her stomach churn. "Regret?" he murmured. "That's rich coming from someone who orgasmed several times."

He leaned in close, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"Or would you rather I ask your husband's permission before I plough you anytime I want?" he said, his hand sliding slickly around her waist.

Before Devon could react, Sophie's hand snapped up and struck him hard across the face.

The sound of the slap echoed through the room, sharp and satisfying. Devon's head snapped to the side, and for the first time, his smug mask cracked if only for a second.

"How dare you!"

Breathing hard, Sophie glared at him, her palm stinging but her heart thundering with something close to vindication.

"You don't get to touch me ever again," she said, her voice low and shaking with suppressed rage.

He straightened slowly, and when he turned back to her, his eyes were darker, something cruel sparking behind them.

"You think that was smart?" he said, his voice low and dangerous.

"I will ruin you." Sophie exclaimed, glaring at him with all the fury burning inside her.

For a beat, silence hung between them, heavy and electric.

Then Devon slowly turned back to face her. And this time, the amusement was gone. His eyes were cold, lethal.

"Poor stupid Sophie." Devon spoke.

He leaned in closer, his breath hot against her ear. "You listen to me carefully, Sophie," he said, his tone turning sharp. "You walk out of here thinking you can destroy me? I'll make one call, and your name will be dirt in this entire industry. You'll never work again. not here, not anywhere."

"If you so much as whisper my name in the wrong ear, I'll make sure you lose everything."

She froze, the blood draining from her face but he wasn't finished.

"And if that's not enough," he continued, voice softer but infinitely more dangerous, "maybe your husband would like to know exactly how eager you were. A few photos. A few carefully chosen words. Let's see how long your perfect little family lasts after that."

Sophie staggered back a step, her face draining of color, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Devon smiled thinly, watching her crumble.

"You're not a threat to me, Sophie," he said, straightening the cuffs of his sleeves. "You're a stain. One I can erase any time I want."

Tears filled her eyes, blurring the edges of the room. She clutched her hands against her chest like a shield, her body trembling.

It was a direct hit.

And it was sharp, cruel, and merciless. The world spun around her. She felt the air leave her lungs as if he had physically struck her. Her hands trembled at her sides.

Devon leaned back, watching her unravel, satisfaction gleaming in his eyes.

"Think carefully, Sophie," he said smoothly. "Sometimes silence is the only protection you have left."

She could no longer hold it together. With a strangled sob, she grabbed her heels and fled, the door rattling on its hinges as she slammed it behind her.
